A hardy armoured catfish from the intermittent rivers of northeastern Brazil's semi-arid interior, Hypostomus sertanejo was described in 2017 from the Rio Jaguaribe basin and nearby Rio Choró in Ceará State. Its name honours the sertanejo — the resilient people of the sertão — a fitting tribute for a fish that persists in seasonally harsh, clear-water streams of the Caatinga.

Taxonomy & naming

Hypostomus sertanejo was formally described in 2017 by Zawadzki, Ramos, and Sabaj Pérez in the Journal of Fish Biology, volume 91, number 1, pages 317–330. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS; species id 74909) records the combination as valid with no synonyms.

The type locality is the Rio Umbuzeiro at the outlet below the São Nicolau dam, municipality of São Nicolau, Ceará State, Brazil, at coordinates 6°40'48.8"S, 40°04'49.1"W. The species belongs to the subfamily Hypostominae and is placed within the large, heterogeneous genus Hypostomus, which encompasses several hundred species across South and Central America.

Morphological features used to distinguish H. sertanejo from related taxa include: slender, numerous teeth (34–75 on the dentary and premaxilla) that are bicuspid and asymmetrical; a caudal peduncle that is laterally rounded rather than keeled; 7 branched dorsal-fin rays; the presence of only 1 predorsal plate (rarely 2) bordering the supraoccipital; and a dorsal-fin spine that, when depressed, does not reach the adipose-fin spine. The pectoral-fin spine is longer than the unbranched pelvic-fin ray. Fins and plated regions bear pale spots or vermiculations on a darker background.

The epithet sertanejo is treated as a noun in apposition — not an adjective declining for gender — and references both the geographic setting (the sertão inland of northeastern Brazil) and the cultural resonance of the term: a sertanejo person is characteristically shy and elusive but also rustic and resilient, qualities the authors found apt for a fish of intermittent, semi-arid rivers.

Morphology

Adults reach a maximum known standard length of 7.5 in SL, placing H. sertanejo in the mid-range for Hypostomus. The body is elongated and fully armoured with the overlapping bony scutes characteristic of loricariids. The caudal peduncle is notably rounded in lateral cross-section rather than bearing the pronounced lateral keels seen in some congeners.

Dentition is slender and relatively numerous: 34–75 teeth are counted on the combined dentary and premaxilla, and each tooth is bicuspid with asymmetrical cusps — a character used to distinguish this species from relatives with fewer or differently shaped teeth. The dorsal fin has 7 branched rays, and when the dorsal-fin spine is depressed, it does not reach the adipose-fin spine — a proportional distinction from some congeners. The pectoral-fin spine exceeds the length of the unbranched pelvic-fin ray.

Coloration is described as fins and plated regions bearing pale spots or vermiculations on a darker background, a pattern common in Hypostomus but sufficient for field recognition in combination with the dentition and peduncle shape characters. Only 1 predorsal plate typically borders the supraoccipital (occasionally 2), which is useful as a supplementary meristic character.

Habitat

Hypostomus sertanejo is known from the Rio Jaguaribe basin and the nearby Rio Choró, both in Ceará State in the semi-arid northeastern interior of Brazil. This region is the sertão — a vast interior of seasonally harsh conditions dominated by the Caatinga biome, one of the most water-stressed and biologically distinctive regions of South America.

The rivers of the northeastern sertão are predominantly intermittent: they flow strongly during and after the rainy season (approximately January to April) but may shrink to disconnected pools or dry completely during the prolonged dry season. Despite this variability, the water at the type locality is described as clear, with rock and sand substrate and variable riparian vegetation. The São Nicolau dam outlet, which defines the type locality, provides some degree of flow regulation at that specific point.

Associated species at the type locality include several other loricariids: Loricariichthys derbyi, Parotocinclus cearensis, Parotocinclus jumbo, Parotocinclus spilurus, and Pseudancistrus genisetiger — indicating a diverse catfish community occupying the same rocky substrate habitat. The intermittent hydrology of northeastern Brazilian rivers selects for physiological tolerance and behavioural flexibility, and Hypostomus as a genus is well-equipped for this via facultative air-breathing.

The Jaguaribe and Choró basins drain eastward to the Atlantic coast of Ceará and are geographically isolated from the major southern drainages (Paraná, São Francisco), which contributes to the distinctiveness of the catfish fauna.

Feeding

No dietary study specific to Hypostomus sertanejo has been published. The teeth — slender, numerous, and bicuspid-asymmetric — differ from the broad spoon-shaped dentition of wood-eating Panaque relatives and are more consistent with an omnivorous scraping and grazing diet: algae, periphyton, biofilm, fine detritus, and small invertebrates rasped from rock and sand surfaces.

In the intermittent rivers of the northeastern sertão, food availability fluctuates dramatically with season. During high-water periods algal growth is suppressed by turbidity and current, while the dry season concentrates fish and food resources in isolated pools. The ability to exploit a wide range of organic matter on hard substrates would be advantageous in this variable environment.

For captive specimens, algae-based sinking wafers, spirulina tablets, blanched vegetables (courgette, cucumber, sweet potato), and biofilm-covered driftwood represent a suitable diet, supplemented occasionally with sinking protein foods. The species is not expected to be a primary wood-rasper given its tooth morphology.

Mating

No reproductive behaviour has been documented for Hypostomus sertanejo. The general Hypostomus pattern involves males selecting and defending cavities — rock crevices, spaces beneath submerged boulders, undercut banks — where spawning takes place. The rocky substrate typical of the type locality provides natural cavity opportunities. Breeding males in the genus develop enlarged interopercular odontodes during the reproductive season, facilitating identification of sex when the fish are in condition.

In intermittent river systems, seasonal breeding cues such as rising water levels, temperature changes, and increased food availability at the onset of the rainy season likely play a significant role in reproductive timing for northeastern Brazilian Hypostomus. No species-specific observation exists.

Breeding

No confirmed captive breeding records exist for Hypostomus sertanejo. The species was described only in 2017 and has not become established in the ornamental hobby or captive breeding programs. Based on the Hypostomus reproductive model, it would be a cave-spawner with the male providing brood care — fanning and guarding eggs until hatching, then guarding the fry until dispersal.

The seasonal hydrology of the northeastern Brazilian sertão suggests that rainfall cues — expressed in captivity as water changes, slight temperature drops, or changes in water chemistry — might be relevant triggers for any future captive breeding attempt. A maximum known size of 7.5 in SL would require a substantial aquarium for conditioning and spawning.

In the aquarium

Hypostomus sertanejo is not an established aquarium fish and is unlikely to be encountered in the ornamental trade. The Caatinga rivers of northeastern Brazil are not a primary collection source for the international hobby, and the species lacks any L-number or common name that would allow hobbyist identification. The 2017 description in Journal of Fish Biology makes this one of the more recently described Hypostomus, and no hobbyist records have been published.

As a species reaching 7.5 in SL, it would require a reasonably large aquarium — 55 US gal or more for a single adult is a sensible minimum, with a rocky substrate, adequate hiding structure, and well-oxygenated water. The clear-water, rock-and-sand habitat at the type locality and the associated fauna suggest conditions typical of flowing, oxygen-rich northeastern Brazilian streams: warm water (the region is tropical, with air temperatures frequently above 86 °F), near-neutral to slightly acidic pH, and low to moderate hardness.

The intermittent hydrology of the native habitat suggests some tolerance for variable conditions, which might translate into a degree of hardiness in captivity — consistent with the sertanejo cultural archetype of resilience the authors invoked in naming the species. Biofilm and algae on rock and driftwood surfaces would be important dietary components alongside sinking prepared foods.

Conservation

Hypostomus sertanejo has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated. The species was described in 2017 from the Rio Jaguaribe basin and Rio Choró in Ceará State, northeastern Brazil — two drainages within the semi-arid Caatinga biome.

The Caatinga is one of Brazil's most threatened biomes, subject to increasing pressure from agricultural water extraction, small-dam construction (including the São Nicolau dam at the type locality), livestock grazing that strips riparian vegetation, and intensifying drought cycles driven by climate change. The intermittent rivers that characterise the region are particularly sensitive to groundwater depletion and reservoir management, both of which alter the duration and extent of flow that aquatic species depend on during the dry season.

The association of H. sertanejo with dam outlet habitat at the type locality is notable: while the dam provides some baseline flow, it also transforms a naturally intermittent reach into a more regulated one, potentially altering the species' native hydrology in ways that are not yet understood. Other loricariid species in the same assemblage — Parotocinclus cearensis, Parotocinclus jumbo, Parotocinclus spilurus — are also poorly known in conservation terms, pointing to a broader gap in assessments of northeastern Brazilian catfish.

A future IUCN assessment of H. sertanejo would benefit from additional field surveys across the Jaguaribe and Choró basins to establish distribution limits, as well as population density estimates at known localities.
