Taxonomy & naming
Hypostomus tapijara was described by Oyakawa, Akama, and Zanata in 2005 in Zootaxa 921 (pages 1–27), based on the holotype MZUSP 55204, a 15 in SL specimen collected from rio Catas Altas, a tributary of the Rio Ribeira de Iguape basin, on 14 October 1995. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) and FishBase recognise Hypostomus tapijara Oyakawa, Akama & Zanata, 2005 as the valid species.
The 2005 paper also provided a review of the genus Hypostomus from the Ribeira de Iguape basin, recognising four species in total: H. agna, H. ancistroides, H. interruptus, and the newly described H. tapijara. Within the basin, H. tapijara is distinguished from its congeners by a combination of large, dark, roundish spots distributed homogeneously over the body and fins, and by its broad dorsal fin with wide interradial membranes. The species belongs to the genus Hypostomus Lacepède, 1803, subfamily Hypostominae, family Loricariidae.
Morphology
Hypostomus tapijara is the largest loricariid in the Rio Ribeira de Iguape basin, with the holotype measuring 15 in (15 in) standard length — the maximum recorded size for the species. Like all loricariids, the body is sheathed in longitudinal rows of overlapping bony scutes. The overall body form is elongated, and the dorsal fin is notably broad with wide interradial membranes, a character that distinguishes the species from the three other Hypostomus occurring in the same drainage.
The most striking colour pattern feature is the large, dark, roundish spots distributed homogeneously across both the body and the fin surfaces. This regular, evenly spread spotting separates H. tapijara from congeners in the basin that display irregular blotched or striped patterns. The ventral mouth bears the typical loricariid oral disc, equipped for rasping algae and biofilm from hard substrates.
Sexual dimorphism is not documented in published sources for this species.
Habitat
Hypostomus tapijara is restricted to the Rio Ribeira de Iguape basin, an Atlantic coastal drainage of southeastern Brazil spanning São Paulo and Paraná States. Confirmed localities include the main channel of the Rio Ribeira de Iguape, and tributary rivers including rio Catas Altas (type locality), rio Pardo, and rio Batatal. The species also occurs in the rio Una do Prelado within the Estação Ecológica da Juréia-Itatins, a coastal drainage that runs parallel and slightly north of the main Ribeira de Iguape system.
Strikingly, H. tapijara is the only Hypostomus in the basin that enters estuarine environments. Specimens have been recorded in brackish coastal waters near Cananéia, São Paulo State, at the point where the Rio Ribeira de Iguape meets the sea. No other pleco species in this drainage shares this estuarine tolerance. Whether this represents regular seasonal movement or opportunistic range extension is not documented.
The Rio Ribeira de Iguape drains the Atlantic Forest of southeastern Brazil. These are typically soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to near-neutral rivers (broadly pH 6.5–7.5) with warm subtropical to tropical temperatures (approximately 64–81 °F depending on season and elevation). No species-specific water chemistry data have been published for H. tapijara; these figures are inferred from regional habitat context.
Feeding
No diet study has been published for Hypostomus tapijara. Given its loricariid oral disc morphology, a diet of algae and periphyton rasped from rocky and hard substrates is the expected baseline, consistent with other non-xylophagous Hypostomus. At its exceptional adult size, H. tapijara likely also consumes significant quantities of organic detritus and coarse fibrous plant material. Its tolerance of estuarine habitat may expose it to marine macro-algae or salt-tolerant periphyton communities unavailable to its strictly freshwater congeners in the basin.

Mating
No reproductive or courtship behaviour has been published for Hypostomus tapijara in the wild or in captivity. The genus Hypostomus is characterised by cave or crevice spawning with male territorial defence, and these traits are presumed to apply to H. tapijara, but remain unconfirmed. Data sparse.
Breeding
No breeding records have been published or reported from captivity for Hypostomus tapijara. Cave or crevice spawning with paternal egg-guarding is the expected reproductive mode by analogy with related species in the genus. At close to 15 in SL, breeding adults would require very large enclosures or natural water-body conditions to undertake spawning successfully. Data sparse.
In the aquarium
Hypostomus tapijara is not an established aquarium fish, and no published husbandry records were found. Its adult standard length of 15 in — with total length likely approaching 17.5 in — makes it one of the larger Hypostomus species and rules out all but the largest display aquaria. A minimum tank volume of 130 US gal would be a conservative baseline for a single adult, with strong filtration and significant water movement to replicate the active Atlantic Forest river environment.
The species' estuarine tolerance is ecologically notable but has no practical aquarium application: there is no basis in published sources for recommending brackish tank conditions, and freshwater maintenance is appropriate. Beyond these inferences from habitat and body size, no captive care guidance can be provided without documented reports.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Hypostomus tapijara as Least Concern in November 2018. Its occurrence within the Estação Ecológica da Juréia-Itatins — a protected area of Atlantic Forest along the São Paulo coast — provides some degree of formal habitat protection for part of its range.
The Rio Ribeira de Iguape valley is one of the best-preserved stretches of Atlantic Forest in Brazil, yet it continues to face pressure from agricultural encroachment, eucalyptus plantation expansion, and infrastructure development. The Atlantic Forest biome has been reduced to approximately 12–15% of its original extent across its range, and the Ribeira de Iguape basin, though relatively intact by comparison, is not immune to these pressures. The estuarine reach near Cananéia — the only confirmed tidal habitat for any Hypostomus in the basin — sits within the Complexo Estuarino-Lagunar de Iguape-Cananéia-Paranaguá, an area of recognised ecological importance for coastal and freshwater biota.
