A small xylivorous Hypostomus endemic to the Cupixi River in the Brazilian state of Amapá, Hypostomus waiampi belongs to the wood-feeding cochliodon group and is named for the Wajãpi, an Amerindian people whose indigenous reserve encompasses the species' only known range. It remains essentially unknown in the aquarium hobby.

Taxonomy & naming

Hypostomus waiampi was described by Hollanda Carvalho and Weber in 2005 in a paper presenting five new species of the Hypostomus cochliodon group from the middle and lower Amazon. The type locality is the western Cupixi River basin, Amapá, Brazil. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the name as valid with no synonyms.

Membership in the H. cochliodon group is taxonomically significant. The cochliodon group is a well-supported assemblage within Hypostomus characterised by strongly bicuspid, spoon-shaped teeth — an adaptation associated with wood feeding (xylivory). This places H. waiampi among the functionally distinctive wood-eating members of the genus, alongside better-known xylivores such as Hypostomus cochliodon itself. The species falls within the subfamily Hypostominae of the family Loricariidae.

Morphology

Adults reach approximately 7.5 in standard length (SL), making H. waiampi a small-to-medium representative of the genus. The body bears the typical loricariid armour of interlocking bony scutes. Published notes indicate a pattern of close-set spots covering the body — a common diagnostic element in the cochliodon group, though specific meristic counts beyond the type description have not been widely reported in accessible sources.

The dentition is the most functionally noteworthy morphological character: the teeth are bicuspid with broad, spoon-shaped (spatulate) cusps, well suited to gouging and rasping wood fibres. This tooth form, shared across the cochliodon group, distinguishes these species from the finer-toothed Hypostomus that are primarily aufwuchs grazers. Like all Hypostomus, the mouth is suctorial and ventrally positioned, with papillose lips.

Habitat

Hypostomus waiampi appears to be endemic to the Cupixi River system in the state of Amapá, northeastern Brazil — a restricted range placing it well north of the main Amazon channel. The Cupixi is a relatively small river draining the interior of Amapá; its upper and western reaches fall within the territory of the Wajãpi indigenous people, whose name the species bears.

Detailed habitat data have not been published for this species. By analogy with other cochliodon-group Hypostomus, it likely inhabits rocky or woody stretches of clear or blackwater rivers, associating closely with submerged wood structures that serve as both food source and refuge. Facultative air-breathing is a genus-wide trait in Hypostomus and likely present here.

Feeding

Membership in the Hypostomus cochliodon group strongly implies a predominantly xylivorous (wood-eating) diet. The group's distinctive bicuspid, spoon-shaped teeth are adapted for gouging and rasping woody tissue — a harder and more fibrous substrate than the biofilm surfaces targeted by most other Hypostomus. Wood tissue itself provides limited nutrition directly; the nutritional return comes primarily from the microbial communities (bacteria, fungi, protists) colonising the wood, supplemented by fermentative digestion of hemicellulose fractions by gut microbiota.

In an aquarium setting, driftwood would be a dietary necessity for this species rather than an optional décor item. Supplementary foods appropriate for xylivorous loricariids include algae wafers, blanched vegetables such as courgette (zucchini) and cucumber, and spirulina-based sinking foods. Heavy animal-protein feeding is not recommended for wood-eaters.

Mating

Reproductive behaviour has not been documented for Hypostomus waiampi. In Hypostomus broadly, courtship involves males establishing and defending suitable spawning cavities, competing with rival males and advertising to females through posture, fin displays, and odontode development. Males of many Hypostomus species develop more pronounced odontodes on the pectoral spines and snout during the breeding season — a feature that plays a role in male-male competition as well as female assessment.

For a medium-bodied species in a restricted endemic range, the breeding season is likely linked to seasonal water level and temperature fluctuations in the Cupixi River, as is typical for Amazonian loricariids.

Breeding

No captive breeding records for Hypostomus waiampi have been located. Based on Hypostomus genus biology, breeding would involve cave spawning — the male selecting a burrow, crevice, or woody cavity, with the female depositing adhesive eggs on the interior surface. Paternal care is the expected pattern: the male would guard and fan the eggs through incubation, removing unfertilised eggs.

Given the species' restricted endemic distribution and near-absence from the ornamental trade, captive breeding attempts have not been reported in hobby literature.

In the aquarium

Hypostomus waiampi is not established in the ornamental trade and has not been reported in hobby literature or aquarium databases. Its maximum size of approximately 7.5 in SL would place it in the mid-range of aquarium-suitable Hypostomus, requiring a tank of at least 55 US gal for a single adult.

Should individuals ever become available, care would follow the principles applicable to other cochliodon-group xylivores: multiple pieces of quality driftwood as a dietary staple, a varied diet of algae wafers and blanched vegetables, tropical water conditions, strong filtration, and ample hiding places in the form of caves or hollow wood. Given that this is an Amazonian species from a small, restricted river system, soft to moderately hard water with a slightly acidic to neutral pH and temperatures in the 75–82 °F range would be a reasonable starting point, though no field-measured parameters have been published.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Hypostomus waiampi as Least Concern in November 2018. No major threats were identified at the time of assessment. The species is recorded solely from Brazil (Amapá state), and its range within the Cupixi River falls partly within the Wajãpi indigenous reserve — a degree of de facto habitat protection not available to many narrowly endemic Amazonian fishes.

Its restricted range nonetheless makes H. waiampi inherently more vulnerable than widespread congeners. Any future threats to the Cupixi watershed — including deforestation, agricultural incursion into the reserve margins, or changes in river hydrology — would affect a population with no known buffer elsewhere. Continued monitoring of the species' status within this small catchment is warranted.
