Taxonomy & naming
Hypostomus wilsoni was originally described by Carl Eigenmann in 1918, with a complementary description appearing in Eigenmann (1922: 74, pl. 9 fig. 5, pl. 10 fig. 1). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the valid combination Hypostomus wilsoni (Eigenmann, 1918), with the parentheses indicating that the species was originally placed in a different genus before being transferred to Hypostomus. A key review of related genera by Armbruster, Werneke & Tan (2015, ZooKeys 480:97–123) is cited by FishBase as a primary reference for the broader generic context.
The specific epithet honours Charles Wilson, an Indianapolis businessman who helped finance Eigenmann's collecting expeditions to South America and who collected the type specimens. This eponymous naming was a common 19th- and early 20th-century convention for recognising expedition patrons. The species belongs to the subfamily Hypostominae and the genus Hypostomus Lacépède, 1803. No L-number has been assigned.
Morphology
FishBase records a maximum total length (TL) of 13 in (male/unsexed; Ref. 36713), placing this in the mid-size range for Hypostomus. The body plan follows the standard loricariid armoured-catfish template: a dorsoventrally flattened head broadening to a wide thorax, tapering to a keeled caudal peduncle, with the flanks and dorsum protected by interlocking bony scutes arranged in longitudinal series. The ventralsurface is paler and less extensively plated.
Beyond the size and distribution data, published morphological descriptions specific to H. wilsoni are not extensive in the accessible literature — the 1918 original description and the 1922 complementary account predate modern quantitative morphometric standards. Eigenmann's original plate illustrations (pl. 9 fig. 5, pl. 10 fig. 1) remain the primary visual reference. As in other Hypostomus, breeding males can be expected to develop odontodes on the interopercular region and along the pectoral spines, though species-specific data on sexual dimorphism have not been recorded.
Habitat
Hypostomus wilsoni is known from the Truando River, a tributary within the upper Atrato River drainage of northwestern Colombia. The Atrato is one of the most biogeographically distinctive river systems in South America, draining the Choco biogeographic region — a zone of exceptional biodiversity and endemism sandwiched between the Pacific coast and the Andean cordillera. The Truando is a remote, lowland Choco tributary characterised by high rainfall, dense tropical rainforest cover, and naturally tannin-influenced, low-conductivity waters typical of the Colombian Pacific lowlands.
The Choco is one of the wettest regions on Earth, and rivers of the Atrato system are strongly seasonal. The IUCN assessment (2014) identifies the restricted range of this species within the Truando watershed as a key vulnerability, and notes that habitat quality in this part of the Choco has been affected by land-use change, though specific field data on microhabitat use by H. wilsoni are not available in the published literature.
Feeding
No dietary studies specific to H. wilsoni are available. The species is presumed to be a periphyton grazer, consistent with the feeding biology of the vast majority of Hypostomus, in which the oral disc and bicuspid teeth function as a scraping apparatus for removing biofilm, algae, and fine detritus from submerged hard substrates — rock faces, submerged wood, and root systems.
In the aquarium, the standard Hypostomus diet of algae wafers, spirulina-based sinking pellets, and blanched vegetables (courgette, cucumber, sweet potato) would form an appropriate dietary base. The strongly wood-influenced, blackwater-adjacent rivers of the Choco lowlands suggest that biofilm on submerged wood and leaf litter may also be a natural food source.
Mating
No mating observations are available for this species from either field studies or captivity. Hypostomus wilsoni is not established in the ornamental trade, and the remoteness of the Truando River means field observations are rare. The reproductive biology of the species can only be inferred from the general Hypostomus pattern: male territoriality around cavity sites, seasonally enhanced odontodes on males, and female assessment of male-held territories prior to spawning. The strong seasonal flooding of the Choco watershed would be expected to provide hydrological cues for reproductive readiness.
Breeding
No captive breeding records for H. wilsoni exist in the accessible literature. The species has not been recorded in European or North American aquarium collections, and the Colombian Choco is not a significant source of ornamental loricariids in the trade. Based on the genus, cave-spawning with paternal brood care is the expected reproductive mode. A male would select and defend a suitable cavity — in nature likely a crevice among submerged tree roots or undercut banks — and guard the adhesive egg clutch through incubation, fanning the eggs to maintain oxygenation.
Given the IUCN Vulnerable listing, collection of wild specimens for aquarium purposes would be inappropriate without robust legal and conservation frameworks.
In the aquarium
Hypostomus wilsoni is essentially absent from the aquarium hobby, and no husbandry information specific to this species is available. Based on its origin in the Choco lowlands — low-elevation, high-rainfall tropical rivers with soft, acidic to neutral water — aquarium conditions should favour warm temperatures (75–82 °F is a reasonable estimate), low to moderate pH (6.0–7.2), and soft water. The fish's natural habitat in densely forested, blackwater-influenced rivers suggests that subdued lighting, abundant driftwood and root tangles, and leaf litter on the substrate would provide appropriate environmental enrichment.
At 13 in TL, adults would require a spacious aquarium — a minimum of 59 in length would be appropriate. Given the conservation status of this species, any specimens in captivity would most responsibly originate from a verified legal source, and captive propagation would be of genuine conservation interest.
Conservation

Criterion A2d denotes an inferred or suspected population reduction based on a decline in area of occupancy, extent of occurrence, or habitat quality, where the causes have not ceased. The Choco biogeographic region, while among the most biodiverse on Earth, faces ongoing pressure from deforestation, gold mining, agricultural conversion, and infrastructure development. The Atrato basin in particular has experienced significant land-use change. No specific population data are available for H. wilsoni, and no conservation programmes targeted at this species are documented. The Vulnerable listing reflects the fragility of a highly restricted range in a threatened landscape — a precautionary signal in the absence of detailed population data.
Given the remoteness of the Truando watershed and the lack of aquarium trade interest in this taxon, the species is not threatened by collection pressure. The primary risk is habitat degradation in the Colombian Pacific lowlands.
