Described from specimens collected in Bahia State more than 160 years ago, Hypostomus wuchereri is one of the older, lesser-known members of the most species-rich pleco genus on Earth. A medium-to-large suckermouth catfish native to the Paraguaçu River basin and neighbouring drainages of northeastern Brazil, it has attracted little aquarium attention precisely because its scientifically interesting history has never quite translated into a hobbyist identity — no L-number, minimal captive breeding data, and a region of Brazil that remains underexplored compared to Amazonian watersheds.

Taxonomy & naming

Hypostomus wuchereri was described by Albert Günther in 1864 in his Catalogue of the Fishes in the British Museum (volume 5, page 235) under the original combination Plecostomus wuchereri, based on syntypes collected in Bahia, Brazil. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS; updated June 2026) recognises the current valid combination Hypostomus wuchereri (Günther 1864). Lectotype designation was attempted by Zanata & Pitanga (2016), though the Catalog notes an irregularity in that action. Four syntypes are held at the Natural History Museum London (BMNH).

The genus Hypostomus Lacépède, 1803 is one of the most species-rich genera of freshwater fishes globally, with well over 130 valid species; H. wuchereri represents the Hypostominae branch of Loricariidae (Armbruster 2004). The species sits within the broader Brazilian coastal-drainage radiation of Hypostomus, a group characterised by considerable phenotypic variation and a history of taxonomic complexity — several closely related species have been described from the Bahia drainages in the 2010s (Zanata & Pitanga 2016; Zawadzki et al. 2017), and H. wuchereri cf. material was referenced in the process (Bitencourt et al. 2011).

No L-number has been assigned to this species. It has been collected infrequently and does not appear to have reached the ornamental trade in commercial quantities. ITIS records it under TSN 680265.

Morphology

Hypostomus wuchereri is a medium-to-large Hypostomus, with FishBase recording a maximum standard length of 14 in — placing it among the larger members of the genus, comparable in size to several commercially traded 'common plecos.' The body follows the standard loricariid plan: entirely enclosed in overlapping bony scutes arranged in longitudinal rows, a strongly depressed head, large ventral sucker-mouth, and the characteristic paired dorsal and ventral rows of odontodes on the buccal disc and body margin.

Colour in museum material (the primary source of morphological knowledge for this species) is described as brown, with pale spotting; the exact density and size of spots appears to vary between individuals and has been a source of taxonomic discussion in the context of related Bahia species. The caudal fin is emarginate. Like other members of the genus, it possesses the multi-cusped bicuspid teeth characteristic of Hypostomus — teeth suited to scraping periphyton, biofilm, and detritus from hard substrates rather than excavating wood in the manner of Panaque.

Sexual dimorphism in H. wuchereri has not been formally characterised in the literature, but in the genus as a whole males typically develop broader heads and more prominent interopercular odontodes (bristles on the cheek region) when mature, while gravid females become noticeably wider-bodied. These differences are most reliably assessed in conditioned, adult specimens.

Habitat

The type locality is Bahia State, Brazil, and the species is most confidently associated with the Paraguaçu River basin — an Atlantic-draining river system that originates in the Chapada Diamantina plateau and flows east to Todos os Santos Bay. FishBase notes the distribution as 'Paraguaçu River basin (?)', with the question mark reflecting a degree of uncertainty given the historical collecting context and the taxonomic complexity of Bahia Hypostomus.

The Paraguaçu and its tributaries drain a diverse landscape: the upper watershed traverses the Chapada Diamantina, a high tableland of ancient Precambrian quartzite and sandstone, before dropping into lower coastal tablelands. Water chemistry in upland portions is soft and moderately acidic to near-neutral, with low conductivity reflecting the siliceous geology. The river supports seasonally variable flow, and research on other Hypostomus in the same system (e.g., the neighbouring Jequiriçá drainage) describes capture habitats up to 197 ft wide and 5 ft deep with rocky, hard substrates — the sort of benthic habitat typical for Hypostomus feeding activity.

Like most Hypostomus, H. wuchereri is presumed to occupy rocky or rubble-strewn river beds and to be a demersal, benthic species capable of facultative air-breathing — a trait documented across the genus (FishBase Ref. 126274).

Feeding

Hypostomus wuchereri belongs to a genus of predominantly algivorous and detritivorous scrapers. The dentition — bicuspid, multi-cusped teeth arranged in broad dental plates — is adapted for rasping periphyton, epilithic algae, and fine organic detritus from submerged rock and woody surfaces. This is the core feeding strategy across most of the genus, distinguishing Hypostomus from the wood-excavating Panaque/Panaqolus lineage.

In the field, Hypostomus species typically feed across a wide range of substrates wherever algal biofilm and associated microbial material accumulate: rock surfaces, submerged wood, leaf litter, and even finer silts. Stomach contents analyses across the genus frequently report diatoms, green algae, fine detrital particles, and invertebrate fragments — the latter possibly ingested incidentally while grazing rather than as a target prey item.

In aquaria, species with comparable ecology thrive on a diet of algae wafers, spirulina discs, blanched vegetables (courgette, cucumber, spinach), and sinking pellets. Driftwood, while not a dietary staple as it is for xylophagous genera, still serves as a behavioural anchor and substrate for biofilm growth and should be provided. Protein-rich foods such as bloodworm can supplement the diet but should not dominate it.

Mating

Reproductive behaviour in H. wuchereri has not been documented in captivity or in peer-reviewed field studies. Inferences can be drawn from well-studied relatives within the genus. In Hypostomus generally, males become territorial as reproductive condition develops, defending rocky crevices, undercut banks, or hollow sections of submerged wood. Males in breeding condition display enlarged, more numerous interopercular odontodes and — in some species — develop tubercles along the snout margin.

Female choice is thought to operate on territory quality rather than on male physical displays alone; the selected cavity determines egg protection and ventilation quality throughout incubation. Courtship interactions in the genus tend to be brief: the male guards and cleans the chosen site, and the female enters to deposit eggs once she approves the site. Multiple spawning attempts may occur over a breeding season, particularly under conditions that simulate wet-season onset — rising water levels, slightly cooler temperatures, and increased food availability.

In the absence of species-specific data, the aquarium keeper should assume broadly similar requirements to other large Hypostomus: ample caves or crevices, moderate current, good oxygenation, and seasonal conditioning cues. No captive breeding of H. wuchereri has been reported in the accessible literature or PlanetCatfish records.

Breeding

No captive breeding reports are available for Hypostomus wuchereri, and field data on nest sites or reproductive biology are absent from the published literature. The following is drawn from genus-level knowledge and should be treated as inference, not confirmed species-specific data.

Hypostomus species are cavity nesters with paternal brood care — a pattern consistent across most of the Hypostominae. The male selects and defends a narrow cavity (a rock crevice, hollow log, or undercut bank), and the female deposits eggs on the cavity walls or floor. Eggs are adhesive and typically amber to pale yellow in colour. Following spawning, the male drives the female out and remains to fan the eggs with his fins, ensuring water circulation and removing any that fail to develop. Incubation lasts approximately 5–7 days depending on temperature. Fry are large relative to most catfishes at hatching, already bearing the loricariid scute pattern, and subsist on yolk for a few days before beginning to graze.

Given the species' large adult size (up to 14 in SL), any breeding attempt would require a large aquarium — minimum 80 US gal, preferably more — with suitably scaled cave structures, vigorous filtration, and excellent water quality.

In the aquarium

Hypostomus wuchereri is not established in the ornamental trade, and sourcing would likely require specialist dealers or direct contact with scientific collection networks. Its potential aquarium requirements are inferred from close relatives.

As a large Hypostomus (reaching 14 in SL, which equates to roughly 15.5–17.5 in total length), this species would require a substantial aquarium — a minimum of 80 US gal for a single adult, with 450+ litres preferred if long-term maintenance and health are priorities. Water should be soft to moderately hard (hardness up to ~15 dH), pH 6.5–7.5, temperature 72–81 °F, reflecting the subtropical climate of Bahia and the soft waters of the Chapada Diamantina uplands.

Strong filtration and regular partial water changes are essential; large loricariids produce significant waste. A sandy or mixed sand-and-gravel substrate with smooth rocks and some driftwood provides appropriate structure. Driftwood offers surface area for biofilm and periphyton development and provides shelter during daylight hours, as these are primarily nocturnal or crepuscular feeders.

Intraspecific aggression is typical for the genus, particularly between males of similar size; keeping more than one specimen requires ample space and visual barriers. H. wuchereri would be compatible with large, robust midwater fish that tolerate similar water chemistry. It is not suitable for planted aquaria with delicate substrates or fine-leaved plants, which it would uproot or damage while feeding and moving.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Hypostomus wuchereri as Data Deficient in 2018, reflecting a genuine lack of population-level information rather than a known threat or security. The species is known from Bahia State, Brazil, within a relatively restricted range centred on the Paraguaçu basin and possibly neighbouring coastal drainages. Several other Hypostomus species are endemic to individual Bahia river systems, pointing to a broader pattern of high local endemism in this region.

The Bahia Atlantic Forest and its associated river systems face significant pressure from deforestation, agricultural conversion, and urban development — the Mata Atlântica is one of the most degraded biomes in South America, retaining only a small fraction of its original extent. The Paraguaçu and its tributaries have been affected by sedimentation from land clearance, water abstraction for irrigation, and at least one major dam (Pedra do Cavalo reservoir). Any species with a restricted endemic range within such a landscape faces potential habitat degradation even in the absence of direct exploitation.

No targeted conservation measures are in place for H. wuchereri specifically. Its inclusion in the IUCN assessment, even as Data Deficient, underscores the value of continued surveys of Bahia river fish communities and taxonomic clarification of the H. wuchereri complex.
