A lean, elegant catfish whose torpedo-like silhouette has barely changed since Charles Tate Regan first described it from the Ecuadorian foothills in 1904, Loricaria simillima is one of the few whiptail plecos genuinely well-documented in captive breeding. Its subtle marbled patterning conceals a fish with an unusually intimate reproductive habit: the male broods the egg mass anchored to his lips — a behaviour so striking that hobbyists have recorded it on video for over two decades.

Taxonomy & naming

Loricaria simillima was described by Charles Tate Regan in 1904 in the Transactions of the Zoological Society of London (volume 17, part 3, number 1, page 292, plate 17, figure 2). The type locality is Canelos, in eastern Ecuador, a locality in the upper Pastaza drainage that feeds into the Amazon. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Loricaria simillima as a valid species; Regan described it in the nominate genus, so no parentheses surround the author citation.

The genus Loricaria was established by Linnaeus in 1758 and is the type genus of the subfamily Loricariinae, one of the major lineages within Loricariidae as defined by Armbruster (2004). Loricariinae includes the long-bodied, flat-bellied whiptail catfishes — Loricaria, Rineloricaria, Pseudohemiodon, and their relatives — all sharing a dorsoventrally compressed body, a beak-like snout, and a striking, elongated caudal filament in most species.

Loricaria simillima is sometimes confused with the similar but more restricted Loricaria cataphracta or with juvenile Rineloricaria; PlanetCatfish notes that adults of Loricaria can be distinguished from Rineloricaria by their more elaborate, feathered sucker-mouths. The species carries no L-number or LDA designation because it entered the hobby under its scientific name and was not initially photographed as an undescribed import.

Morphology

The body is strongly depressed and elongate, the classic whiptail shape: a flat belly, a broad head tapering to a pointed snout, and a caudal fin with an extended upper filament. The armoured surface is covered in overlapping bony scutes bearing small odontodes. Ground colour is pale tan to sandy brown, overlaid with a fine, irregular reticulation of darker brown that produces the 'marbled' appearance the common name invokes. The exact pattern varies geographically and individually; fish from blackwater localities tend toward more muted contrast.

FishBase records a maximum standard length of 10.5 in for the species; PlanetCatfish gives 7 in SL as typical for specimens maintained and bred in captivity. Both figures likely reflect the same species given the broad range (Amazon, Orinoco, and La Plata basins), with the larger figure perhaps representing old-growth fish from the Amazon proper.

Sexual dimorphism is present and useful. Mature males develop a fringe of short, fine bristle-like odontodes on the lateral aspects of the snout tip and on the first pectoral-fin ray — far less conspicuous than the interopercular bristles of Ancistrus, but noticeable under magnification. Gravid females are conspicuously broader in the abdomen when viewed from above. The clearest indicator of sex in captivity is behavioural: only males are observed carrying the egg cluster.

Habitat

The distribution spans three major river systems: the Amazon basin (including the upper Pastaza from the type locality), the Orinoco basin, and the La Plata basin — a remarkably wide range suggesting ecological versatility. This breadth means wild-collected fish may arrive from very different water chemistry regimes: upper Andean foothill tributaries tend to be cooler, moderately hard, and neutral; Orinoco tributaries range from whitewater to blackwater; La Plata basin fish encounter cooler subtropical winters.

PlanetCatfish notes that imports identified as blackwater-origin fish require lower pH and softer water, while the more commonly traded whitewater form tolerates pH 6.4–7.8 without difficulty. Temperature at the type locality is tropical, but the La Plata arm of the range experiences seasonal cooling. FishBase records the thermal range as 75–82 °F.

Microhabitat is essentially demersal sand and fine gravel. This is not a rocky-rapid specialist — Loricaria simillima lives on the riverbed, among vegetation, roots, and debris accumulations in moderate flow, where it rests flat on the substrate during the day and forages after dark. The species is a facultative air-breather (FishBase, ref. 126274), a trait widespread in the Loricariinae as an adaptation to warm, seasonally hypoxic lowland habitats.

Feeding

In the wild, Loricaria simillima is an omnivorous benthic forager with a strongly detritivorous component. The ventral mouth, equipped with its elaborate, finely fringed lip pads, is designed for rasping organic films — bacteria, microalgae, fine detritus, and small invertebrates — off sandy and muddy substrates. The gut contents of Loricariinae members typically include sediment particles, diatoms, algae, and invertebrate fragments.

In the aquarium, the species is unfussy and accepts a wide range of foods once settled. Sinking tablet foods, algae wafers, blanched vegetables (courgette, cucumber, spinach), and occasional protein supplements in the form of frozen bloodworm, Daphnia, or brine shrimp are all appropriate. Because this is not a wood-eating xylophage, driftwood is not a dietary requirement — though its presence as a surface for biofilm growth and shelter is welcome.

Feeding activity peaks at night. During the day, fish tend to remain motionless, pressed flat against the substrate or nestled against décor. In a well-lit aquarium, feeding before lights-out or immediately after is the surest way to observe them eating.

Mating

Courtship in Loricaria simillima has been observed multiple times in captivity. The male establishes a loose territory centred on a preferred spawning site — often a flat piece of slate, a smooth rock, or a section of pipe or cave — and becomes increasingly assertive toward rival males as the female ripens. No elaborate chasing or fin-spreading display is described; the male's activity is more a matter of persistent proximity and positioning.

Conditioned females can be distinguished by their clearly wider, rounder abdominal profile. The actual act of spawning takes place rapidly and is rarely observed directly in a community setting; observers typically discover the male already tending a clutch. The adhesive eggs are attached to the spawning surface initially, but within a short period the male picks up the clutch and attaches it to the underside of his lip region.

Males and females can be kept together in groups without consistent aggression, provided the tank has sufficient open substrate and multiple possible spawning sites. The species does not form lasting pair bonds — a single male may breed sequentially with several females in a group.

Breeding

The reproductive mode of Loricaria simillima is one of its most distinctive features: the male broods the egg cluster attached to his lip pads, carrying it with him at all times and fanning it with fine mouth movements to oxygenate the developing embryos. This form of mouthbrooding — more accurately described as 'lip-brooding' — is characteristic of the genus and well-documented in hobbyist literature, including a dedicated article in PlanetCatfish's Shane's World series.

A typical clutch contains several dozen to over a hundred eggs, pale green to amber in colour, each several millimetres in diameter. Incubation at 75–81 °F takes approximately 8–14 days. PlanetCatfish hosts video footage of newly hatched fry and the male carrying the clutch. After hatching, the fry are relatively large and well-developed, with substantial yolk reserves; the male continues to attend them briefly until they begin dispersing.

Breeding is reliably triggered by good water quality, regular partial water changes (mimicking seasonal dilution), appropriate temperature, and a varied conditioning diet. Three breeding reports are registered on PlanetCatfish. The species is not mass-produced commercially — captive-bred specimens appear on the hobbyist market only sporadically — but it is regarded as one of the more straightforward whiptails to breed once a conditioned pair is established.

In the aquarium

Loricaria simillima is a rewarding, peaceable species for a well-maintained community aquarium oriented around South American biotopes. The key requirement is floor space: like all whiptails, it spends virtually its entire life on the substrate and needs room to move without constant disturbance. A tank of at least 35.5 in in length — ideally 47 in or more — provides adequate territory for a small group of two to four fish.

Substrate should be fine, smooth sand or very fine gravel. The fish will burrow slightly into the substrate or lie flat against it; coarse gravel or sharp substrate can damage the ventral skin and lead to infection. Décor should include flat stones, smooth driftwood, and low-lying caves or broad plant leaves as resting sites. Strong planting is compatible — Loricaria simillima does not rasp plants — and val or Amazon sword leaves at substrate level are appreciated.

Water parameters should match the whitewater origin for most imported specimens: temperature 75–81 °F, pH 6.4–7.6, moderate hardness (up to ~15 dGH). Blackwater-origin fish may require softer, more acidic conditions. Water quality must be maintained scrupulously — like all Loricariinae, this species is sensitive to elevated ammonia, nitrite, and persistent high nitrate.

The species is entirely peaceful with tankmates of similar size or larger. Small fish (under ~1 in) may be at minor risk around a guarding male, but aggression toward other species is not documented. Compatible tankmates include characins, peaceful cichlids, Corydoras, and other non-aggressive bottom-dwellers. Avoid keeping with fish that compete for substrate territory aggressively.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Loricaria simillima as Least Concern in 2020. The species has an exceptionally broad range — Amazon, Orinoco, and La Plata basins — and no evidence of widespread population decline. Its tolerance of a range of water conditions across this vast area contributes to its resilience.

The aquarium trade collects L. simillima at modest levels; it appears in the hobby primarily from whitewater tributaries of the Amazon and Orinoco. It is not among the most heavily traded plecos, and commercial pressure is unlikely to threaten the species given its range size.

Habitat pressures relevant to this and many Neotropical fish include deforestation-driven siltation, agricultural runoff, and hydroelectric development across the Amazon and La Plata basins. These are longer-term concerns shared across the family rather than threats specific to this species. La Plata basin populations may face additional pressure from wetland conversion and water abstraction in Argentina and Paraguay, though this has not been quantified for this species specifically.
