A slender whiptail catfish from the Middle Amazon, Loricariichthys acutus is one of the genus's less-visited species — known from floodplain lakes near Manaus and carrying an uncertain type locality that has shadowed it since Valenciennes first put it to paper in 1840. Like all members of its genus, the male broods his offspring in an intimate and unusual way: the eggs are fixed directly to an expanded, spongy lower lip and carried there through the entire incubation period.

Taxonomy & naming

Loricariichthys acutus was described by Achille Valenciennes in 1840, published in the fifteenth volume of the monumental Histoire naturelle des poissons, co-authored with Georges Cuvier. The original combination was Loricaria acuta, with plate 452 of that work illustrating the type specimen. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) treats Loricariichthys acutus as the valid name, with Loricaria acuta listed as a junior synonym.

The type locality is historically uncertain — recorded informally as 'believed to be from Brazil' — a data gap attributable to the inadequate provenance information attached to many specimens reaching Parisian naturalists in the early nineteenth century. Subsequent specimen records link the species to the Middle Amazon zone around Manaus, including Lago Janauari (Lake Hyanuary), a floodplain lake on the left bank of the Solimões.

The genus Loricariichthys was erected by Bleeker in 1862. The name combines the Latin lorica (leather cuirass or breastplate, here applied to the bony scute armour characteristic of all loricariids) with the Greek ichthys (fish). Within the family Loricariidae, the genus belongs to subfamily Loricariinae — the whiptail catfishes — which are united by their elongated, depressed body form and, in many species, a filamentous extension of the caudal fin.

The specific epithet acutus is Latin for 'sharp' or 'pointed', and is understood to refer to the pointed or acuminate profile of the snout or head in this species.

Morphology

Loricariichthys acutus is a slender, dorsoventrally flattened catfish with the classic whiptail body plan: a broad, armoured head tapering to a narrow, elongated caudal peduncle that may carry a filamentous upper or lower caudal ray extension. The entire dorsal surface is covered in overlapping bony scutes; the ventral surface of the abdomen is unplated and naked, as is typical of Loricariinae.

FishBase records a maximum standard length of 11 in SL (Ref. 125975), while PlanetCatfish lists 8 in (8 in) SL — the larger FishBase figure is used here as the documented maximum, and likely reflects the largest measured specimen; the PlanetCatfish figure may reflect a more typical aquarium-encountered size. A recorded weight of approximately 91.6 g accompanies the larger size figure.

The mouth is positioned inferiorly and is surrounded by fleshy lips that are notably expanded in breeding males (see Mating). The snout is pointed relative to some congeners, consistent with the specific epithet. Ground coloration in preserved specimens tends toward pale brownish or straw, with variable darker blotches or banding along the flanks; live colouration is incompletely documented for this species.

The most striking secondary sexual character in all Loricariichthys is the lower lip: in breeding males the lower lip becomes massively hypertrophied, swollen, and spongy — forming the brooding surface to which eggs are attached. In females and non-breeding males the lower lip is comparatively slender and unremarkable.

Habitat

Specimen records associate Loricariichthys acutus with the Middle Amazon (Solimões) near Manaus, and specifically with Lago Janauari — a classic Amazonian floodplain lake (várzea lake) on the Solimões left bank. Várzea lakes such as Janauari are seasonally inundated by whitewater (nutrient-rich, turbid, circumneutral) Amazon floodwaters and then partially isolated during the low-water season.

Water conditions in this zone during the flood period are characteristically warm (approximately 79–86 °F), soft to moderately soft, and ranging from slightly acidic to neutral (pH roughly 5.5–7.0) depending on the degree of mixing with whitewater river inputs versus blackwater drainage from surrounding igapó forest. During low water, floodplain lakes become warmer and more chemically distinct.

Loricariichthys species in general are demersal, spending most of their time on or near the substrate — sandy or muddy lake and river bottoms, often in shallow marginal areas with accumulated organic detritus. They are not associated with fast-flowing rocky streams in the manner of many plated loricariids.

Beyond the Middle Amazon records, the broader distributional limits of L. acutus are not clearly established, and the uncertain type locality means the species' full range within South America cannot be stated with confidence based on currently available data.

Feeding

No detailed dietary study exists specifically for Loricariichthys acutus, but the feeding ecology of the genus is broadly consistent across species and is informed by general Loricariinae biology. Members of Loricariichthys are opportunistic detritivores and omnivores, exploiting the rich organic sediment layer of floodplain lake bottoms. Recorded food items for the genus include fine sediments and associated detritus, benthic algae and periphyton, microcrustaceans, fungal matter, plant fragments, and larval aquatic insects.

The inferior mouth and broad, fleshy lips are adapted for grazing soft substrates: the fish presses its mouth against the bottom and draws in a slurry of sediment and organic material, extracting digestible components and expelling mineral sediment. This is a common feeding mode among the Loricariinae.

In captivity, L. acutus would be expected to accept sinking foods appropriate to a detritivorous loricariid: high-quality sinking wafers (algae-based or mixed), blanched vegetables, and fine frozen or live foods such as bloodworm or daphnia as supplementary protein.

Mating

Loricariichthys is one of the most biologically distinctive loricariid genera in terms of reproductive behaviour, and the mating system centres on an unusual anatomical transformation in the male. As the breeding season approaches, the male's lower lip undergoes dramatic hypertrophy: it expands, thickens, and becomes spongy or warty in texture, forming a large fleshy pad that functions as a brooding platform. This labial brooding structure is unique to the genus among loricariids.

Courtship details are not documented in detail for L. acutus specifically, but the general Loricariichthys pattern involves males establishing territories in suitable bottom habitat and competing with other males. Females with ripe eggs approach and deposit their clutch in proximity to the male, who then attaches the egg mass to his expanded lower lip. The eggs adhere to the lip surface and remain there throughout incubation — the male carries them as he goes about his activity on the substrate, holding his head in a slightly raised posture to keep the egg mass from contacting the bottom.

This mode of paternal care — technically described as labial or lip-brooding — is documented in several Loricariichthys species and is considered a synapomorphy (shared derived character) of the genus. The female's lower lip remains comparatively slender and unmodified, providing a reliable morphological means of sexing adults outside the breeding season when the male's lip is less exaggerated.

Breeding

The labial brooding system of Loricariichthys results in the male being the sole attending parent through incubation. Once the egg mass is secured to the lower lip, the male carries it continuously, periodically moving through the water column in a characteristic head-up posture that keeps the eggs oxygenated in the water current passing over his lip surface.

Clutch size and incubation period are not specifically documented for L. acutus. No captive breeding reports for this species are recorded on PlanetCatfish, and it does not appear to have been spawned in aquaria under documented conditions. General parameters inferred from related species and from the Middle Amazon habitat suggest incubation would proceed at 79–84 °F.

After hatching, the larvae or early juveniles likely remain on or near the male briefly before dispersing, consistent with the pattern in other lip-brooding loricariids. The degree of post-hatching parental investment in Loricariichthys has not been precisely characterised in the primary literature for most species.

In the aquarium

Loricariichthys acutus is not an established aquarium species. It carries no registered common name, no keeper records appear on PlanetCatfish, and no images are on file there — suggesting it has not entered the ornamental trade in any meaningful volume and is essentially unknown in the hobby.

For a specialist prepared to work with uncommonly available Loricariinae, the species would require conditions appropriate to a Middle Amazon floodplain loricariid: warm water (79–86 °F), soft to moderately soft chemistry, near-neutral to slightly acidic pH, and a sandy or fine-gravel substrate with generous organic detritus accumulation or leaf litter. A long, shallow aquarium better suits the depressed body form than a tall tank.

Given its maximum recorded length of 11 in SL, the tank footprint would need to be substantial — a minimum 47 in tank length is a reasonable baseline for an adult. Filtration should be gentle and biological rather than powerful and turbulent, reflecting the still or slow-moving floodplain lake habitat.

The labial brooding biology means that, should captive breeding be attempted, the keeper must distinguish sexes (breeding male's hypertrophied lower lip is the key character) and provide substrate conditions that allow the brooding male to rest comfortably without damaging the egg mass.

Conservation

Loricariichthys acutus is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the most recent evaluation dated 15 October 2020. The listing reflects the absence of documented population decline and a distribution within the broad Middle Amazon basin.

The Middle Amazon near Manaus is subject to sustained urban and industrial pressure — river traffic, sedimentation from shoreline development, periodic pollution events associated with the city of Manaus, and alteration of várzea lake dynamics through water management and land clearance. However, no specific data indicating decline in L. acutus populations were identified at the time of assessment, and the species was not considered to meet any threshold for a threatened category.

The uncertain type locality and limited distributional data mean the full extent of the species' range is not known, which introduces some uncertainty into any evaluation of its conservation status. Should future surveys identify the species as more range-restricted than currently understood, reassessment would be warranted.
