Taxonomy & naming
Loricariichthys edentatus was formally described by Reis and Pereira in 2000. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises it as a valid species within the genus Loricariichthys Bleeker, 1862, family Loricariidae, subfamily Loricariinae. A broader taxonomic checklist reference is Ferraris (2003), who included the species in his treatment of Loricariinae in the Checklist of the Freshwater Fishes of South and Central America.
The genus name combines the Latin lorica (cuirass or leather coat, referring to the armoured body) with the Greek ichthys (fish) — literally 'armoured fish'. The specific epithet edentatus derives from the Latin edentatus, meaning toothless, and refers to the reduced or absent teeth that distinguish this species from its congeners within Loricariichthys. The epithet is diagnostic: the genus contains several species, and reduced dentition is the key character separating L. edentatus from the remainder.
Morphology
L. edentatus reaches a maximum recorded standard length of 4.5 in. The body follows the typical Loricariichthys plan: strongly dorsoventrally flattened, with a broad, depressed head and a long, slender caudal peduncle bearing the whip-like tail extension common to the subfamily Loricariinae. The body is armoured with overlapping bony scutes; the ventral surface is unarmoured and pale.
The most remarkable morphological feature of breeding males in this genus is the dramatically enlarged lower lip, which becomes hypertrophied and spongy during the reproductive season. This expanded lip forms a specialized brooding surface onto which the male anchors and carries the entire egg mass. In non-brooding individuals the lip remains less conspicuous. The specific epithet alludes to reduced dentition relative to congeners, a character visible in cleared-and-stained material and in careful examination of fresh specimens.
Habitat
The type locality is the Rio Uruguay at brazo Itape, south of Isla Canario, near Concepción del Uruguay, Entre Ríos province, Argentina (32°29'S, 58°14'W). The species is distributed in the lower Uruguay River basin, spanning Argentina and Uruguay. FishBase records its distribution as the lower Uruguay River, and the IUCN assessment confirms a range spanning Argentina and Uruguay within the La Plata system.
The lower Uruguay is a temperate river system; at the type locality latitude (~32°S), the climate is warm-temperate with a pronounced seasonal temperature range. Winter water temperatures can drop considerably compared with tropical South American systems. FishBase classifies the species as a temperate freshwater demersal fish, a classification consistent with its geographic position well south of the tropics. The species inhabits benthic microhabitats over mud and sand in the lowland river floodplain.
Feeding
Loricariichthys as a genus are benthic omnivores and detritivores, using the oral disc to vacuum up fine organic sediment, algae, diatoms, and invertebrates from soft-bottomed substrates. The trophic level recorded for L. edentatus is 2.7 (±0.2 se), suggesting a slightly more varied diet than strict herbivores — consistent with soft-bottom detritivory in which small invertebrates and microorganisms are ingested alongside plant material.
In the aquarium, closely related Loricariichthys species accept sinking pellets, algae wafers, blanched vegetables, and fine-grained foods that settle to the substrate. The soft lower lip region involved in brooding is sensitive; sharp or coarse foods are best avoided. Sandy substrate that allows the fish to sift and forage matches natural behaviour.
Mating
The reproductive biology of Loricariichthys centres on one of the most specialised paternal investment structures among loricariids. In males, the lower lip undergoes hypertrophy during the breeding season, developing into an enlarged, soft, adhesive brooding pad. This transformation is the primary external sexual character in mature males; non-breeding males and all females have a more normally proportioned lip.
Courtship likely follows the pattern documented for other Loricariichthys species, with the male establishing a territory and pairing with a gravid female. The female deposits her eggs and the male immediately incorporates them onto his lower lip, where the mass adheres and is carried through incubation. The exact courtship ritual for L. edentatus has not been described in published literature, but the anatomy of lip brooding is well characterised for the genus.
Breeding
Loricariichthys edentatus is a lip-brooding species with paternal care — a form of parental investment unique within Loricariidae, where the male carries the egg mass massed against and adhered to the expanded lower lip throughout incubation. This strategy is known from several Loricariichthys species and represents an extraordinary adaptation in a family otherwise dominated by substrate-spawning and cave-guarding behaviours.
No captive breeding account specific to L. edentatus has been published. For congeners that have been bred in aquaria, the presence of a brooding male is unmistakable: the egg mass is visible as a pale cluster held against the chin. The male continues moving and feeding during brooding, carrying the clutch until hatching. Fry disperse and begin independent feeding once sufficiently developed.
For aquarists attempting to breed this temperate species, providing a cooler overwintering period (dropping toward 61–64 °F) may be an important conditioning cue, reflecting the natural seasonal temperature cycle of the lower Uruguay basin.
In the aquarium
L. edentatus does not appear in the mainstream ornamental trade and would most likely be encountered through specialist importers or hobbyist groups focused on South American catfish and Loricariinae. Its modest adult size (under 4.5 in SL) is not a limiting factor, but its temperate origins and unusual brooding biology make it of specific interest to dedicated catfish keepers.
Tank setup should reflect the lowland river environment: fine sand substrate, some smooth stones, and open water for foraging. The fish is a demersal species and does not require extensive vertical structure. Water should be clean, with moderate to no current, reflecting the lowland river floodplain microhabitat. Temperature in the range of approximately 61–75 °F is likely appropriate given the temperate latitude of the type locality; sustained tropical temperatures may not be optimal for long-term health.
The species is inoffensive toward other fish. Multiple individuals can be kept if tank space allows, though male–male dynamics during the breeding season may require observation.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Loricariichthys edentatus as Least Concern in November 2020. The distribution spans the lower Uruguay River basin in Argentina and Uruguay, and no major threats were identified at the time of assessment.
The lower Uruguay and its associated floodplains are subject to agricultural intensification, drainage of wetlands, soy and rice cultivation along river margins, and water-quality impacts from agro-industrial runoff. Sedimentation of soft-bottom benthic habitats, which this species occupies, may be a localised pressure. The Rio Uruguay also lies downstream of several hydroelectric facilities on the upper and middle sections of the river. At current population status, L. edentatus is not considered threatened, but monitoring of the floodplain habitat it depends on remains prudent.
