Taxonomy & naming
Loricariichthys maculatus was described by Marcus Elieser Bloch in 1794 in his Naturgeschichte der ausländischen Fische (volume 8, p. 73, Pl. 375, figs. 1–2), the original combination being Loricaria maculata. Bloch based the description on material of uncertain precise origin, noted broadly as South America and presumed to be from Suriname — a supposition supported by the type locality given by subsequent authors as 'South America (probably Suriname).' The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the valid combination Loricariichthys maculatus, with several earlier names including Loricaria accipenser, Loricaria amazonica, Loricaria parahemiodon, Parahemiodon typus, and Plecostomus cataphracta treated as synonyms.
The genus Loricariichthys was erected to accommodate elongated, dorsoventrally flattened whiptail catfishes within subfamily Loricariinae. The genus name fuses the Latin lorica (a leather cuirass or corselet of armour) with the Greek ichthys (fish), giving 'armour-fishes'. The species epithet maculatus derives from the Latin macula (spot or blotch), referring to the distinctive dark-spotted or mottled dorsal pigmentation. Armbruster's (2004) phylogenetic analysis of Loricariidae places Loricariichthys within Loricariinae as part of a broader radiation of elongated whiptails characterised by their long caudal filaments and ventrally positioned mouths.
Morphology
Adults reach approximately 10.5 in standard length (SL), with a published maximum weight of around 130 g, making L. maculatus one of the larger members of its genus. The body is strongly depressed — flattened top-to-bottom — and tapers posteriorly into a slender caudal peduncle, from which a filamentous caudal extension may develop in large individuals. The entire dorsal and lateral surface is armoured with interlocking bony scutes arranged in longitudinal rows; the abdomen is naked or only partially covered with small platelets.
Coloration above is brown to greyish-brown with irregular darker blotches or mottling, particularly on the dorsal scutes — the maculatus epithet. The belly is pale cream to off-white. The head is broad and strongly depressed, with the mouth positioned on the ventral surface; the lips are fleshy and form a sucking disc equipped with fine teeth for scraping biofilm and detritus. The iris is often divided by a lobe of pigmented tissue, a feature common in Loricariinae. Males and females differ in head shape: breeding males develop a notably broader, flatter head and enlarged lips, which serve in oral incubation of eggs — a distinctive behavioural trait of Loricariichthys. Large males may also exhibit odontodes on the pectoral spines and lateral scutes.
Habitat
FishBase records the distribution of L. maculatus as the rivers of Suriname, with broader occurrence noted in the Guiana coastal river systems and lowland drainages of the Guiana Shield. The species inhabits freshwater environments of the tropical lowlands, occurring in ditches, floodplain ponds, slow reaches of rivers, and seasonally inundated areas — microhabitats with soft, silty or muddy substrates rather than the rocky rapids preferred by many other Loricariidae.
The genus Loricariichthys includes facultative air-breathers that can supplement gill respiration with atmospheric air when dissolved oxygen is low, an adaptation valuable in the seasonal, hypoxic conditions of tropical floodplains. Water conditions in coastal Suriname rivers range from slightly blackwater to more turbid whitewater depending on season and catchment geology, with temperatures typically in the range of 75–84 °F and pH from near-neutral to mildly acidic. The species is demersal, spending most of its time on or near the substrate, pressed into bottom sediments or wedged under submerged debris.
Feeding
Like other members of Loricariichthys, L. maculatus is predominantly a detritivore and microalgae scraper. The genus is characterised by a diet heavy in detritus and fine sediments, supplemented by algae, microcrustaceans, fungi, plant remains, and larval invertebrates gleaned from soft substrates. The fleshy sucker mouth and fine teeth are well-suited to processing loosely attached biofilm and fine organic particles from mud and sandy silt.
In an aquarium setting, a diet of high-quality sinking wafers with a strong vegetable or algae component (spirulina wafers, algae discs) supplemented with blanched vegetables (courgette, cucumber, spinach) provides appropriate nutrition. Small amounts of frozen or live invertebrate foods — bloodworm, tubifex, brine shrimp — can be offered to supplement protein, but the diet should skew heavily toward plant-based and detritus-analogue foods. The fish is an active, searching feeder along the substrate and will disturb fine-grained substrates in its foraging.
Mating
Reproductive behaviour in Loricariichthys is well-characterised relative to many whiptail genera, owing to the unusual mode of parental care the males of this genus perform. Prior to spawning, males patrol substrate areas and engage in agonistic displays with rival males; the broad, flattened head and enlarged lips of mature males appear to serve dual roles in contest signalling and later egg incubation.
Conditioned females become visibly gravid with a broadened abdominal profile. Courtship involves close proximity swimming and the male's persistent attention to the female. In closely related species within the genus, courtship contacts and lip-nudging behaviour have been described in aquarium observations. Because the male's oral incubation strategy demands physical commitment, mate choice and pre-spawning assessment of parental quality may be more intense in this genus than in many other loricariids where cave-guarding is the norm.
Breeding
Loricariichthys maculatus, like its congeners, is an oral incubator — one of a small number of loricariid genera in which the male carries fertilised eggs attached to or pressed against the lower lip and adjacent structures rather than guarding them in a cave or on a substrate. After spawning, the male collects the adhesive eggs and holds them in place on the enlarged lower lip and chin area. He fans them with the movement of water through his gills and respirations, and carries them through the incubation period until they hatch.
This lip-brooding strategy is energetically costly for the male but keeps eggs oxygenated and protected from benthic predators in turbid, low-oxygen environments. Clutch sizes and exact incubation periods for this species are not well documented in the published aquarium literature. In closely related Loricariichthys species, clutches of several dozen to over a hundred eggs have been reported in aquaria. Fry, once released, are miniature replicas of adults and begin feeding on biofilm and fine particulate matter almost immediately.
In the aquarium
Loricariichthys maculatus is rarely encountered in the hobby, with PlanetCatfish recording only one image and no keeper reports — most imports of the genus that appear in the trade are the more commonly collected L. platymetopon or L. brunneus. Should specimens be encountered, a large tank is advisable: at 10 in SL the species is substantially larger than popular whiptails like Rineloricaria parva and requires correspondingly more space. A minimum of 40–55 US gal is appropriate for a single adult or pair.
Substrate should be fine sand or silt, which the fish will sift and excavate during foraging. Decoration with submerged bogwood, leaf litter, and some open sandy areas replicates lowland floodplain conditions. Filtration must handle the organic load generated by a large detritivore, and regular partial water changes are essential. Water parameters should reflect the tropical Guiana lowlands: temperature 75–84 °F, pH 6.5–7.5, soft to moderately hard. The species is peaceful toward dissimilar tankmates, though two large males may contest substrate territory. Compatible companions include peaceful mid-water tetras and other calm South American species. The oral incubation behaviour is a remarkable spectacle if breeding occurs.
Conservation
Loricariichthys maculatus was assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN Red List (Ballen, 2021), reflecting its broad distribution across the Guiana coastal lowlands and rivers of Suriname, with no evidence of significant population decline. The species tolerates the disturbed, eutrophic conditions of agricultural ditches and human-modified waterways, which adds resilience to populations in increasingly anthropogenic landscapes.
Suriname retains substantial areas of intact lowland tropical forest and wetland habitat, and the aquatic systems of the Guiana Shield are among the less degraded in South America, although mining activity — particularly gold mining — poses localised threats through mercury contamination and habitat disturbance in some drainage systems. The species is not a significant ornamental trade target, reducing collection pressure. No specific conservation measures are in place, and none are considered necessary at present.
