Taxonomy & naming
Otocinclus mura was formally described by Scott A. Schaefer in 1997 in the Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia (volume 148, page 77, Fig. 47). The type locality is the Rio Sanabani, município de Silves, approximately 2°51′40″S, 58°15′40″W, within the Rio Solimões / Sanabani / Lago Canaçari drainage basin, Amazonas State, Brazil. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Otocinclus mura Schaefer, 1997 as a valid species with no currently accepted synonyms.
The genus Otocinclus was established by Cope in 1871 to accommodate the miniature suckermouth catfishes of subfamily Hypoptopomatinae, one of the more derived subfamilial groupings within Loricariidae. Schaefer's 1997 monograph revised the entire genus and described nine new species, placing O. mura among a radiation tied to the central Amazon basin. No L-number or LDA-number has been assigned to this species in the hobby press. Within the broader family, Hypoptopomatinae (sensu Armbruster, 2004) is one of five subfamilies; Otocinclus itself contains approximately 19 valid species, all of them small, algae-grazing demersal fish from South America.
Morphology
Adults measure up to 1.5 in standard length (SL), making O. mura one of the smallest species in the genus. Body plan follows the typical Otocinclus pattern: a flattened ventral profile facilitating surface adhesion, a small downward-facing suctorial mouth, and a covering of bony scutes in lateral and dorsal series. Ground colour is pale to medium brown on the dorsum, lighter on the flanks, with a prominent dark mid-lateral stripe running from the snout tip to the caudal peduncle, where it expands into a dark basal blotch on the caudal fin. The belly is unpigmented and pale.
Otocinclus is distinguished from most other loricariid genera by the absence of an adipose fin and by the compact, torpedo-shaped body proportions suited to turbulent shallow water. The genus lacks the interopercular odontodes (cheek bristles) seen in Ancistrus and Chaetostoma males. Sexual dimorphism in O. mura is subtle: females are noticeably larger and broader-bodied than males, especially visible when viewed from above. The difference in body width between a gravid female and an adult male is the most reliable external indicator. No formal published meristic or osteological characterisation distinguishing O. mura from congeners is reproduced here beyond what Schaefer (1997) provides.
Habitat
The Rio Sanabani type locality sits within the vast Lago Canaçari floodplain system — a seasonally inundated várzea landscape connected to the main Rio Solimões (upper Amazon). The region experiences pronounced seasonal hydrological cycles: high-water season (December–May) floods surrounding forest and várzea grasslands, while low water (June–November) concentrates fish in river channels and lake margins. Water chemistry in the Solimões drainage is typically whitewater: turbid, near-neutral to slightly alkaline, with moderate ionic content derived from Andean headwaters.
PlanetCatfish records water parameters of pH 6.0–7.2 and temperature 68–79 °F for this species. Like other Otocinclus, O. mura is expected to occupy shallow, well-lit sections of the water column — algae-covered leaf litter, submerged vegetation, and waterlogged branches — wherever periphyton and epilithic algae accumulate. The floodplain environment exposes the fish to seasonal temperature fluctuation and varying water quality as flood pulses recede.
Feeding
Otocinclus mura is an obligate periphyton and soft-algae grazer. In nature it scrapes biofilm, green algae, diatoms, and associated detritus from submerged surfaces using its small, fine-cusped teeth. The functional morphology of the Otocinclus oral disc is optimised for precision grazing on smooth and slightly rough surfaces — glass panes, broad plant leaves, and submerged wood — rather than for excavating wood or consuming large algae filaments.
In the aquarium, a reliable and abundant food supply is essential. Without sufficient soft algae and biofilm, Otocinclus starve rapidly despite appearing otherwise healthy — a common cause of decline in newly imported fish. Supplementary foods must be accepted willingly: blanched courgette (zucchini), spinach leaves, cucumber, and commercial algae wafers or spirulina tablets placed directly on hard surfaces near resting fish work well. The species will not compete effectively with larger or more aggressive feeders for food at the substrate surface. Regular feeding sessions with targeted placement improve survival rates significantly in shared tanks.
Mating
Mating behaviour in Otocinclus mura specifically has not been described in the literature, but the genus as a whole follows a well-documented and broadly consistent reproductive pattern documented for O. vittatus, O. affinis, and several other congeners in aquarium settings. Males pursue and closely follow ripe females around the tank, with the male pressing his snout against the female's abdomen or flanks in a characteristic T-position — the male oriented perpendicular to the female — during which fertilisation of released eggs is thought to occur.
Conditioned pairs or groups with multiple males and females are more likely to spawn. Well-fed fish with access to clean water, live algae surfaces, and a slight temperature drop or simulation of a cool water change often triggers spawning attempts. The courtship period may last several hours with repeated pursuit chases before egg deposition begins.
Breeding
Like other Otocinclus, O. mura is a scatter-spawner that deposits small adhesive eggs directly onto algae-covered plant leaves or other smooth, clean surfaces rather than in enclosed caves. Spawning has not been formally documented in the published literature for this species specifically, but captive breeding accounts for Otocinclus in the hobby suggest a clutch of up to approximately 50 small eggs, individually placed in pairs or small clusters on leaves of broad-leaved plants such as Echinodorus and Cryptocoryne, or on aquarium glass.
No parental care is offered after egg deposition. Eggs are transparent to pale and hatch in approximately 48–72 hours at typical temperatures. Fry consume soft algae and infusoria once they are free-swimming. Raising fry to juvenile size requires abundant periphyton or regular supplementation with powdered spirulina and infusoria cultures, as the tiny juveniles cannot efficiently consume large food items. PlanetCatfish lists no registered breeding reports for this species as of 2025.
In the aquarium
Otocinclus mura is an excellent candidate for planted aquaria and nano tanks by virtue of its small adult size (under 1.5 in SL). A group of six to ten fish can be maintained comfortably in a 10–15 US gal planted tank, provided algae and biofilm surfaces are abundant. The species is entirely peaceful with other fish and causes no damage to plants or wood structures.
Water parameters should remain within pH 6.0–7.2 and 68–79 °F; clean, well-oxygenated water is important — Otocinclus are sensitive to elevated nitrates and ammonia, and newly imported wild-caught fish often arrive stressed and nutritionally depleted. A quarantine period with abundant soft algae is strongly advised before introduction to a community tank.
O. mura is not commonly available in the trade. Most Otocinclus sold commercially belong to O. vittatus and related species from the Paraná basin; true O. mura from the Solimões system appear rarely. When available, they should be kept in groups of at least six — solitary individuals rarely settle and feed well. Suitable tankmates include small, peaceful fish: nano tetras, pygmy rasboras, small Corydoras, and invertebrates. Avoid boisterous or fast-moving species that will out-compete these slow, methodical grazers for food.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Otocinclus mura as Least Concern in 2018 (assessment published 7 November 2018), citing a sufficient extent of occurrence within the central Amazon basin and no evidence of a population decline meeting threatened thresholds. The Solimões floodplain system, while vast, faces ongoing pressures from deforestation, agricultural expansion along the várzea, and aquatic chemical contamination from pesticide runoff in upriver soy-farming regions.
Otocinclus species in general are collected in very large numbers for the ornamental fish trade, raising concerns about the sustainability of harvest for the most common congeners. O. mura itself, being uncommon in trade and tied to the Canaçari floodplain, is probably subject to lower harvesting pressure than trade staples such as O. vittatus or O. cocama. Captive breeding is rare for this species. Continued monitoring of trade volumes and habitat condition in the Solimões várzea would be warranted as agricultural intensification proceeds in Amazonas State.
