Barely three centimetres from snout to tail-base, Otothyropsis piribebuy earns its place among the smallest loricariids known to science. This minute hypoptopomatine grazes algal films and biofilm from submerged surfaces in a single Paraguayan stream tributary, making it a specialist of narrow range and outsized scientific interest.

Taxonomy & naming

Otothyropsis piribebuy was described by Calegari, Lehmann A. & Reis in 2011, published in Zootaxa. The type locality is the Riacho Piribebuy, a small tributary of the Río Paraguay drainage in Paraguay, and the species epithet honours that stream directly.

The genus Otothyropsis was erected by Ribeiro, Carvalho & Melo in 2005 to receive a group of miniature hypoptopomatine catfishes closely allied to Otothyris but differing in odontode arrangement and certain cranial characters. Six valid species are currently recognised in Otothyropsis on FishBase — alicula, biamnicus, dialeukos, marapoama, piribebuy, and polyodon — placing this fish within a small and phylogenetically coherent clade of South American microloricariids. Within the family Loricariidae, Hypoptopomatinae is one of the principal subfamilies; its members are characterised by small body size, a reduced or absent adipose fin, and a depressed head bearing a ventrally positioned sucking mouth adapted for surface grazing rather than wood-rasping.

No L-number or aquarium trade code has been assigned to O. piribebuy, reflecting its minimal hobbyist circulation. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the valid combination as Otothyropsis piribebuy Calegari, Lehmann A. & Reis, 2011.

Morphology

Otothyropsis piribebuy reaches a maximum recorded standard length of approximately 1 in — placing it among the smallest loricariids described to date. Like all members of its subfamily, the body is encased in interlocking bony scutes arranged in lateral and dorsal series, giving the fish a distinctly armoured profile despite its diminutive stature.

The head is broad and depressed, with the mouth oriented ventrally and equipped with small, fine teeth suited to scraping thin algal films and biofilm rather than rasping hard substrate. The adipose fin is reduced, consistent with hypoptopomatine morphology. Overall colouration is typical of the group: a mottled or finely patterned brown and cream that provides camouflage against sand, leaf litter, and biofilm-coated rock surfaces.

O. piribebuy is distinguished from its congeners by a particular combination of odontode arrangement and head proportions detailed in the original 2011 description. Sexual dimorphism is not well documented for this species; in related hypoptopomatines, males may develop subtle odontode elaboration, but published data for piribebuy are sparse.

Habitat

The species is known from the Riacho Piribebuy, a small stream in the Río Paraguay drainage of Paraguay. This type locality is a clear-water to slightly turbid tributary typical of the Paraguayan lowlands, with a substrate of sand, fine gravel, and submerged leaf litter interspersed with rocky or hardpan patches.

Hypoptopomatines of this kind are generally benthopelagic in shallow, vegetated stream margins or areas where current moderates and biofilm accumulates on hard surfaces. Water chemistry in the Paraguay basin ranges from slightly acidic to near-neutral with low to moderate hardness, and temperatures in subtropical Paraguay show marked seasonal variation — warm summers above 82 °F and cooler winters that can approach 64 °F. Specific physico-chemical data recorded at the type locality for this species are not available in published sources to date.

Feeding

Otothyropsis piribebuy is an aufwuchs and biofilm grazer. Using its ventrally positioned mouth and fine multi-cusped teeth, it scrapes thin layers of algae, diatoms, bacteria, fungal hyphae, and organic detritus from rock surfaces, submerged wood, and compacted substrate. This feeding mode is characteristic of the Hypoptopomatinae as a whole, and distinguishes the group from the wood-eating panaquine lineages.

In an aquarium context, the fish can be expected to graze continuously on biofilm that develops on any hard surface — glass, rocks, driftwood, and substrate. Supplementary feeding with algae-based wafers, spirulina tablets, or small sinking pellets would support a captive specimen, though detailed husbandry records for this species in the trade are essentially absent.

Mating

No published observations of courtship behaviour in Otothyropsis piribebuy are available. Courtship and mate selection in related miniature hypoptopomatines generally involves males establishing small territories around microhabitat features — crevices, leaf litter clumps, or compact substrate — and displaying to females through fin extension and lateral posturing.

Given the small body size of this species, breeding territories, if they exist, would be correspondingly minute. Beyond what can be inferred from the broader hypoptopomatine pattern, specific mating behaviour for O. piribebuy remains undocumented.

Breeding

No captive breeding records for Otothyropsis piribebuy have been published or reported in the hobby literature. Its extremely small size and narrow natural range have kept it outside commercial aquaculture and specialist breeding programmes.

Based on the reproductive biology of comparable miniature loricariids in the Hypoptopomatinae, spawning likely involves adhesive egg deposition in a sheltered microhabitat, with some degree of parental attention, though whether this species is a substrate guarder or offers no post-spawning care is unknown. These details await formal study.

In the aquarium

Otothyropsis piribebuy is essentially unknown in the aquarium trade and has no established hobbyist profile. Its tiny size — under 1 in SL — means it would be suitable only for nano or species aquaria where it would not face competition or predation from larger fish.

Any aquarium housing this species should replicate the conditions of its Paraguayan stream origin: clean, well-oxygenated water with a pH near neutral, moderate temperature (around 72–81 °F to accommodate subtropical seasonal range), and a substrate that permits biofilm development. Flat stones, pieces of terracotta, and driftwood surfaces would provide grazing territory. Given the near-total absence of import records, this is a fish that only dedicated specialists are likely to encounter outside Paraguay.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Otothyropsis piribebuy as Least Concern in 2021. The assessment notes that while the species has a restricted range — confined to the Riacho Piribebuy drainage within the Río Paraguay system — no major threats have been identified, and the population is considered broadly stable within its known habitat.

The Paraguay lowlands face long-term pressures from agricultural expansion, riparian deforestation, and water abstraction, all of which can degrade small stream systems. For a species with so limited a range, localised habitat alteration could have disproportionate effects. Ongoing monitoring of the Riacho Piribebuy and its water quality would be prudent, even if the current assessment is reassuring.
