Taxonomy & naming
Ancistrus pirareta was described by Fisch-Muller, Moullet, and Loizeau in 1989 in the Revue Suisse de Zoologie (volume 96, number 4, p. 891). The type locality is a tributary of the Río Tebicuary-mi at 25°30'S, 56°55'W, Salto Pirareta, Cordillera Department, Paraguay. No synonyms are listed for this species. The specific epithet pirareta commemorates the waterfall (salto) of the same name at the type locality.
The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Ancistrus pirareta Fisch-Muller, Moullet & Loizeau, 1989 as the valid combination. In the aquarium trade the species is registered as LDA053 — an 'Das Aquarium' code assigned to fish that arrived in the hobby after the initial DATZ L-number series was established; the LDA series covers many Ancistrus and related taxa.
Ancistrus belongs to the tribe Ancistrini within the subfamily Hypostominae of the family Loricariidae. The genus is one of the most species-rich in the family and ranges across tropical and subtropical South America from the Amazon basin south into the La Plata system. Phylogenetic analyses confirm Ancistrus as a broadly defined genus; species from the southern La Plata drainage such as A. pirareta represent a biogeographically distinct lineage from the Amazonian core of the genus.
Morphology
PlanetCatfish records a size of 6 in SL, while FishBase gives a maximum of 6 in SL — consistent figures indicating a moderately large bristlenose by genus standards, noticeably bigger than the widely kept Ancistrus cirrhosus and comparable to some of the larger Amazonian species. The body form follows the standard Ancistrus plan: strongly flattened and depressed, with bony scute armour covering the body except the unplated belly, and a ventral sucker disc mouth adapted for adhesion to hard substrates.
The most immediately recognisable character of the genus — and the clearest indicator of sexual maturity in this species — is the development of branched, fleshy tentacles on the rostrum (snout) and interopercular region of breeding males. These tentacles, unique to Ancistrus among the Loricariidae, are absent or rudimentary in females and juvenile males. In A. pirareta, mature males develop a substantial fan of branched tentacles across the snout, giving the genus its common name 'bristlenose'. Females may occasionally develop small marginal tentacles along the snout rim, but the full multi-branched dorsal fan is male-specific.
Adult females are typically broader in body profile when gravid, especially when viewed from above. The difference in head profile — males having the dramatic tentacle fan, females a comparatively smooth snout — makes sexing straightforward in adults.
Habitat
Ancistrus pirareta is known from the Paraguay River basin, specifically from rocky tributary streams of the Río Tebicuary-mi in Cordillera Department, Paraguay. The type locality, Salto Pirareta, is a waterfall environment — the kind of rocky, fast-water habitat that Ancistrus typically inhabit, where boulders and bedrock provide both substrate for biofilm grazing and crevices for shelter and breeding.
At 25°30'S, the type locality places A. pirareta in subtropical Paraguay — considerably further south than the Amazonian centre of diversity for the genus. Subtropical Paraguayan streams experience meaningful seasonal temperature fluctuation: summer water temperatures can reach the mid-to-upper 20s°C, while winter conditions may drop significantly. Rocky fast-water tributary habitats in this region are generally well-oxygenated, with moderate to hard water chemistry reflecting the limestone geology of parts of the Cordillera region.
The La Plata basin tributaries of Paraguay drain through terrain distinct from the soft-water, blackwater habitats of much of Amazonia. The Río Tebicuary and its tributaries tend toward clearer, harder water than Amazonian rivers, which has implications for aquarium water chemistry recommendations for this species.
Feeding
Like all Ancistrus, A. pirareta is primarily an aufwuchs grazer — feeding on periphyton biofilm, algae, diatoms, and fine organic material scraped from rock surfaces with its broad, multi-cusped teeth. In the fast-water habitats of Paraguayan tributary streams, the biofilm on submerged rocks and boulders forms the natural dietary staple.
In captivity, the diet should be algae-based: quality algae wafers, spirulina discs, and fresh blanched vegetables are the foundation. Blanched courgette (zucchini), cucumber, sweet potato, and peas are reliably accepted. Natural algae growth on rocks and glass supplements the diet. Occasional offerings of small invertebrate-based foods — frozen bloodworm, small earthworms — can be given, but protein-heavy feeding is not appropriate as a regular diet for this primarily herbivorous species. Driftwood in the aquarium is beneficial as a surface for biofilm colonisation and as a supplementary rasping substrate, though Ancistrus is not a xylophage and does not require wood as a dietary necessity in the way that Panaque or Panaqolus do.
Mating
The elaborate rostral tentacles of adult male Ancistrus are the genus's most conspicuous secondary sexual character, and they play a direct role in mate attraction and male–male competition. A mature male A. pirareta with a well-developed tentacle fan is unambiguously advertising reproductive status; females are understood to use the tentacle development as an indicator of male quality or territory-holding capacity.
Males establish and defend cave sites — the preferred spawning locations — against rival males. Territorial interactions between males can be vigorous, involving chasing, flaring of interopercular odontodes, and physical contact. In a sufficiently large tank with multiple caves and visual barriers, several males and females can be maintained without chronic stress, but two males competing for the same cave site in a small tank will not coexist peacefully.
A receptive female inspects the male's cave before entering; the male courts her within the cavity. The female's gravid body profile — noticeably rounder and wider than the male's from above — makes it possible to identify females approaching spawning condition.
Breeding
Ancistrus pirareta is a cave-spawner with paternal brood care, conforming to the well-established breeding pattern of the genus. The male selects and defends a tight cave — a hollow piece of driftwood, a ceramic breeding tube, a section of PVC pipe, or a cave formed between rocks — and after mating deposits the adhesive egg clutch within the cavity. The male then remains with the clutch for the full incubation period, fanning the eggs with his pectoral and ventral fins to maintain oxygen flow and removing any infertile or fungused eggs.
PlanetCatfish records six registered keepers, indicating the species is occasionally maintained in specialist collections, though it is not among the commonly bred Ancistrus. For other species in the genus, incubation typically runs 5–10 days at tropical temperatures, and the male continues to guard the fry after hatching until they disperse.
Conditioning for breeding should include a varied diet, regular partial water changes to maintain water quality, and the provision of multiple suitable cave sites slightly smaller in diameter than the male, so that he must squeeze in — this encourages territorial investment and egg-guarding. A slight temperature drop followed by a rise can mimic seasonal cues. The subtropical origin of this species suggests it may respond to seasonal temperature variation more strongly than Amazonian Ancistrus.
In the aquarium
At up to 6 in SL, Ancistrus pirareta is a larger-than-average bristlenose and should be housed accordingly — a tank of 30 US gal or more is appropriate for a single specimen, with 50 US gal or more for a breeding pair or small group. The tank should be furnished with rocks forming caves and crevices, pieces of driftwood, and areas of moderate to strong current provided by the filter return or an additional powerhead. Multiple caves are important if more than one male is kept.
Water chemistry should reflect the subtropical Paraguayan origin: temperature 68–79 °F (the species will tolerate a wider seasonal range than purely tropical Ancistrus), pH 6.8–7.8, moderate hardness. The La Plata basin is harder and more alkaline than Amazonian tributaries, so A. pirareta is likely more tolerant of harder water than many Ancistrus species — an advantage in areas with naturally hard tap water. Water quality should be excellent; regular partial water changes of 25–30% weekly are recommended.
The species is peaceful toward other fish but males are territorial toward conspecifics and other plecos competing for the same cave. Driftwood in the tank is beneficial but not mandatory. Compatible tankmates include community fish sharing the subtropical temperature range: larger tetras, barbs, cichlids of comparable size, and other bottom-dwellers that do not directly compete for rock caves. Avoid keeping with large, aggressive cichlids that may harass the pleco, or with very small fish that could be accidentally displaced by the pleco's size.
Conservation
FishBase cross-references a Least Concern (LC) assessment for Ancistrus pirareta, understood to reflect a 2018 IUCN evaluation. The Paraguay River basin is a large and relatively intact river system, and the La Plata drainage as a whole supports substantial areas of intact freshwater habitat. At the time of assessment, no major threats to A. pirareta were identified sufficient to elevate the species above Least Concern.
However, the Cordillera Department of Paraguay — and the broader catchment of the Río Tebicuary — are subject to agricultural intensification, including livestock grazing that degrades riparian vegetation and increases sedimentation in tributary streams. Deforestation in Paraguayan watersheds has been substantial over recent decades, and fast-water rocky stream habitats can be disproportionately affected by sedimentation that smothers the biofilm-bearing rock surfaces on which Ancistrus depend.
The species is present in specialist catfish collections in small numbers (six registered keepers on PlanetCatfish), indicating it reaches the hobby occasionally. Captive breeding, while not widely documented, is possible given the genus's established cave-breeding behaviour, and any successful propagation would reduce pressure on wild populations.
