A small armoured catfish from the Paraguay River basin of Argentina, Hypostomus formosae is known from a handful of streams in Formosa Province and remains essentially unknown in the aquarium hobby. Its description in 2016 added a morphologically distinct taxon to a large and still-expanding genus.

Taxonomy & naming

Hypostomus formosae was formally described by Cardoso, Brancolini, Paracampo, Lizarralde, Covain & Montoya-Burgos in 2016, in Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters volume 27, number 1 (pages 9–23). The type locality is Saladillo Stream, a tributary of the Paraguay River, Formosa Province, Argentina (26°26'28"S, 58°24'03"W). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) lists it as a valid species within the family Loricariidae.

The species belongs to the H. plecostomus species group, a broad assemblage supported by both morphological and molecular analyses. Its description was accompanied by a redescription of the closely related Hypostomus boulengeri, from which H. formosae had previously been confused. The two species are diagnosed by the covering of small plates on the snout tip in H. formosae (naked in H. boulengeri), a lower tooth count — 13–28 premaxillary teeth and 10–25 dentary teeth versus 16–32 and 15–31 in H. boulengeri — and a median plate series count of 25–26.

The species name honours Formosa Province, the Argentine territory where the type specimens were collected. Distinct from any species in the unrelated South American catfish genus Chaetostoma, the name refers solely to the province and carries no implication of unusual beauty. Note that a separate fish, Chaetostoma formosae, also uses the same epithet for the same province; context (family) resolves any potential confusion.

Morphology

The largest specimens measured in the type series reached 3.5 in standard length (SL), making H. formosae a relatively small member of the genus Hypostomus. The body follows the typical loricariid plan: dorsoventrally compressed, encased in rows of bony scutes, with a subterminal suckered mouth equipped with bicuspid teeth.

Diagnostic characters include the complete coverage of the snout tip with small plates — a feature absent in H. boulengeri, which has a naked snout tip — and the reduced tooth counts noted above. The abdominal region occupies 19.1–30.3% of standard length. Water turbidity at collection sites (51–98 NTU) suggests the species is adapted to moderately turbid lowland river conditions rather than clear-water upland streams.

Detailed coloration and odontode development are not extensively described in the original paper beyond the diagnostic characters. Sexual dimorphism has not been documented for this species specifically, though male Hypostomus typically develop more prominent interopercular odontodes than females.

Habitat

Hypostomus formosae is known from the Paraguay River basin in Formosa Province, Argentina, and from Paraguay. The type specimens were collected in Saladillo Stream, a lowland tributary of the Paraguay River, at coordinates 26°26'28"S, 58°24'03"W.

Water chemistry at the type locality was measured during the original survey: pH 6.4–7.3, dissolved oxygen 5.9–6.6 mg/L, conductivity 67–660 µS/cm, and turbidity 51.1–98.1 NTU. The wide range in conductivity reflects seasonal variability typical of Chaco lowland streams, which can shift considerably between dry and wet seasons as floodplain hydrology changes. The turbidity values indicate murky, sediment-laden water rather than clear-water habitat.

These are warmwater lowland streams of the Gran Chaco, a flat, seasonally flooded plain draining toward the Paraguay–Paraná system. Bottom substrate is likely soft sediment and mud, with submerged wood and root tangles providing refuge sites, as is typical for Hypostomus across the Río de la Plata drainage.

Feeding

No specific dietary data have been published for Hypostomus formosae. Like most members of the genus, it is presumed to be an opportunistic benthic grazer, feeding on periphyton (attached algae and biofilm), fine detritus, and organic material scraped from submerged surfaces using its bicuspid teeth.

Hypostomus species in turbid lowland rivers of the Paraguay–Paraná system commonly ingest large quantities of fine sediment along with organic detritus and algae. The bicuspid tooth morphology is consistent with scraping on hard substrates such as wood, rock, or firm sediment rather than the spatulate teeth of wood-specialist genera such as Panaque or Panaqolus.

Mating

No mating or reproductive behaviour has been documented for Hypostomus formosae in the wild or in captivity. The species is not known to have been maintained in aquaria. General Hypostomus biology predicts that males would establish and defend cavity sites during the breeding season and develop more prominent interopercular odontodes when reproductively active, as seen across the genus.

Breeding

No breeding records exist for Hypostomus formosae. The species has not been reported in the aquarium hobby, and no spawning accounts appear in the ichthyological or hobbyist literature. Hypostomus is broadly a genus of cave-spawners with paternal egg-guarding, and H. formosae is presumed to follow this pattern, but no data are available to confirm clutch size, incubation period, or larval development.

In the aquarium

Hypostomus formosae is not documented in the aquarium hobby as of the time of writing. No imports or captive specimens have been reported. For a species of its size — under 3.5 in SL in known specimens — a modestly sized aquarium of 40–55 US gal with soft substrate, driftwood, and hiding places would be appropriate if it were to enter the trade, given typical habitat in lowland, seasonally variable streams.

Water parameters at the type locality (pH 6.4–7.3, moderate conductivity) suggest tolerance of a range of slightly acidic to neutral, moderately soft water — conditions not difficult to replicate. Turbid water with modest flow would replicate natural conditions most closely, though many loricariids acclimate readily to cleaner aquarium water provided dissolved oxygen and organic load are managed.

Conservation

Hypostomus formosae has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List and carries no formal conservation status. Its distribution appears limited to Formosa Province in Argentina and adjacent Paraguay within the Paraguay River basin — a relatively restricted range for the genus.

The Gran Chaco lowlands face pressures from intensive agricultural expansion, particularly soy and cattle farming, which drive deforestation and increase erosion and sedimentation in watercourses. Stream channelisation and altered flood regimes in the Chaco pose ongoing risks to benthic fish communities. The wide conductivity range at the type locality suggests some tolerance of variable conditions, but the extent of the species' range and population size remain unquantified. A formal assessment against IUCN criteria would require targeted surveys across the Paraguay basin in Argentina and Paraguay.
