Described by Claude Weber in 1986 from a seasonal arm of the Río Tebicuary in Paraguay, Hypostomus piratatu is one of the larger armoured catfishes inhabiting the eastern tributaries of the Paraguay River. It belongs to a diverse Hypostomus fauna in the Paraná-Paraguay system and is assessed as Least Concern — a reflection of its relatively wide distribution across a basin still rich in riverine habitat.

Taxonomy & naming

Hypostomus piratatu was described by Claude Weber in 1986 in the Revue suisse de Zoologie (volume 93, number 4, pages 979–1007), in a paper that simultaneously revised Hypostomus boulengeri (Eigenmann & Kennedy) and described two species new to science from Paraguay — H. piratatu and H. latifrons. The type locality is given as an arm of the Río Tebicuary at Sapucái, Paraguay. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Hypostomus piratatu Weber, 1986 as a valid species.

Cardoso et al. (2016) placed H. piratatu within the H. plecostomus species group, one of several informal species-group groupings used to organise the large and phylogenetically complex genus Hypostomus. The species is listed in the Paraguay Fish Checklist (Koerber et al. 2017, Ichthyological Contributions of PecesCriollos 53: 62) among the 14 Hypostomus species known from the Paraguay River. Additional references to the species appear in Weber (2003), Ferraris (2007), and Jerep et al. (2007), confirming its consistent recognition across successive global and regional checklists. The Catalogue of Life taxon ID is 6MQX9.

Morphology

FishBase records a maximum standard length of 11 in SL for H. piratatu — a substantial size placing it among the larger members of the Paraguay River Hypostomus fauna. Total length would exceed 12 in in a fully grown adult. The body conforms to the typical Hypostomus plan: heavily armoured with overlapping bony scutes, the ventral surface naked or lightly plated, and the mouth a broad sucker positioned beneath the snout.

Muller and Weber (1992: 750, fig. 2d) described and illustrated the dental morphology of this species, distinguishing it from closely related Paraguay basin congeners. The specific pattern of dentition, tooth number, and tooth shape used in the 1992 comparison placed H. piratatu in a group of species with relatively numerous, narrow bicuspid teeth — consistent with the broadly omnivorous or algivorous scraping diet typical of non-wood-eating Hypostomus.

Detailed external colouration, spot pattern, and sexual dimorphism data are not available in the sources consulted. Data are sparse.

Habitat

The type locality — an arm of the Río Tebicuary at Sapucái, Paraguay — places H. piratatu in the eastern Paraguay River system. The Río Tebicuary drains the Cordillera and eastern hills of central Paraguay before joining the Paraguay River, and is a typical subtropical seasonal river: warm, moderately turbid whitewater subject to flooding and marked dry seasons.

Distribution data compiled across Weber (1986), Cardoso et al. (2016), and the Paraguay checklist (Koerber et al. 2017) indicate that H. piratatu occupies eastern Paraguay River tributaries within Paraguay, with the possibility of occurring in adjacent sections of the Argentine and Brazilian Paraná-Paraguay system. No water parameter data (pH, temperature, hardness) for this species were recovered from the sources available.

Feeding

No species-specific feeding data for H. piratatu are available in the sources consulted. It belongs to the H. plecostomus species group, members of which are typically opportunistic scrapers — grazing periphyton and aufwuchs from hard substrate, supplemented by detritus and small invertebrates. Without cochleariform (spoon-shaped) teeth, H. piratatu is unlikely to be a wood-eater in the manner of the H. cochliodon group; biofilm and algal grazing are the inferred primary feeding mode. Data are sparse.

Mating

No mating behaviour data specific to H. piratatu are available. The genus Hypostomus follows a broadly conserved loricariid pattern in which males become territorial around nest sites, develop pronounced odontodes during the breeding season, and court females through postural and tactile displays. Whether this species exhibits these behaviours and whether sexes can be reliably distinguished externally is not established in the available literature. Data are sparse.

Breeding

No captive breeding records for H. piratatu have been found in the sources available. As with other large Hypostomus from subtropical river systems, cave-spawning with paternal egg-guarding is the probable reproductive mode, consistent with family-wide patterns in Loricariidae. Specific data on clutch size, incubation, or fry development cannot be confirmed. Data are sparse.

In the aquarium

Hypostomus piratatu is not widely kept in the hobby and does not appear in mainstream aquarium trade lists. Its potential maximum size of over 12 in TL means it requires a very large aquarium — a minimum of 80 US gal or more — with powerful filtration adequate for a large waste-producing catfish.

The subtropical origin (Paraguay River system) suggests a tolerance for seasonal temperature variation. Water temperatures in the natural range fluctuate considerably between summer and winter in subtropical Paraguay, with summer peaks potentially reaching 82–86 °F and winter lows dropping toward 59–64 °F; the species likely tolerates a broad thermal window. pH and hardness specifics are absent from available data.

Aquarium management should follow general practice for large Hypostomus: ample hiding places (broad flat rocks, large pipe sections), a varied diet of algae-based foods and vegetables, regular large water changes, and avoidance of housing with tankmates small enough to be displaced. Without captive breeding data and given its infrequent availability, H. piratatu is primarily of interest to specialist catfish keepers.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Hypostomus piratatu as Least Concern, with the assessment dated 3 February 2021. This reflects a distribution across the Paraguay River system without evidence of major population decline. The eastern Paraguay tributaries where this species is found remain relatively intact in comparison to the more heavily altered lower Paraná, and the Paraguay basin as a whole supports diverse Hypostomus fauna.

Longer-term pressures on the Paraguay basin include agricultural intensification, wetland drainage in the Pantanal headwaters, and periodic flood control interventions. For a species of this size, targeted collection for the ornamental or food-fish trade could become a localised concern, though no such pressure has been documented for H. piratatu specifically.
