Farlowella paraguayensis is a twig catfish of the Paraguay River system — an extraordinarily elongate loricariid whose pencil-thin body and bark-brown coloration render it nearly invisible against submerged plant stems and driftwood. Delicate in appearance and exacting in its husbandry requirements, it rewards patient keepers with understated elegance and occasional aquarium breeding.

Taxonomy & naming

Farlowella paraguayensis was described by Retzer and Page in 1997 in a comprehensive revision of the genus Farlowella published in Copeia. The type locality is the Río Paraguay drainage within Paraguay, and the species epithet directly reflects this geographic origin. The revision by Retzer and Page (1997) recognised 22 Farlowella species and distinguished F. paraguayensis from congeners by its moderate rostral length, lateral plate counts, and distribution in the Paraguay basin.

The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Farlowella paraguayensis Retzer & Page, 1997 as the valid name. The genus Farlowella belongs to the subfamily Loricariinae, the whiptail catfishes, and within this group the twig catfishes (sometimes informally separated as 'farlowellas') form a recognisable assemblage defined by extreme body elongation and the characteristic extended rostrum.

No L-number has been assigned to this species; it enters the hobby sporadically under the general trade name 'twig catfish' or 'needle catfish'.

Morphology

Farlowella paraguayensis is one of the most elongate freshwater fishes kept in the hobby. Adults reach approximately 7 in standard length (SL), but because the body is pencil-thin from snout to caudal fin, the impression of length is amplified beyond the actual measurement. The rostrum — the elongated snout extension projecting ahead of the mouth — is a defining character of the genus; in F. paraguayensis it is moderately developed relative to some longer-snouted congeners.

The body is covered in bony scutes arranged in keeled lateral rows. Ground coloration is typically a streaked mid-brown to tan with a pale lateral stripe running the length of the flank, creating near-perfect twig or plant-stem mimicry when the fish rests motionless against a dark background. The belly is paler and unplated.

Sexual dimorphism is most readily observed in breeding-conditioned adults. Males develop rostral odontodes — small, stiff bristles that emerge from the sides of the snout — during the reproductive season; females lack these structures. Females in breeding condition are noticeably rounder-bodied, particularly in the mid-section.

Habitat

Farlowella paraguayensis is endemic to the Paraguay River basin, with a range spanning Paraguay and adjacent parts of Brazil. The Paraguay River is one of the major tributaries of the Río de la Plata system, draining a large subtropical lowland region including the Pantanal — the world's largest tropical wetland — as well as faster upland headwater streams further north.

In its natural habitat the species favours densely vegetated river banks, reed-beds, and areas of submerged wood and plant debris in slow to moderately flowing water. It is an essentially sedentary fish that relies on cryptic coloration and stillness for predator avoidance, resting pressed flat against plant stems, submerged branches, or smooth wood surfaces. Water conditions in the Paraguay basin vary by season and location: typical parameters are pH 6.5–7.5, temperature 72–81 °F, soft to medium hardness, with good clarity. The subtropical latitude means that seasonal temperature fluctuation — cooler winters, warmer summers — is part of the natural cycle.

Feeding

Farlowella paraguayensis is a biofilm grazer and soft-algae feeder. The ventral, suctorial mouth is adapted for rasping thin layers of diatoms, green algae, cyanobacteria, and associated organic matter from plant stems, smooth driftwood, and other submerged surfaces. This feeding mode contrasts with the wood-eating of genera such as Panaqolus or Panaque: F. paraguayensis targets the surface film rather than the wood substrate itself.

In the aquarium, the species requires a tank with established algal growth — bare, freshly set-up tanks provide insufficient food. Supplementary feeding with algae wafers, spirulina discs, and thin slices of blanched courgette (zucchini) or cucumber placed directly on plant leaves or driftwood is accepted. Foods should be offered in small amounts consistent with the fish's modest energy demands. Overfeeding degrades water quality rapidly in the small, clean tanks this species requires.

Mating

During the breeding season, the sexual dimorphism of F. paraguayensis becomes pronounced: males develop rostral odontodes that are visible as bristle-like projections on the snout, and females become visibly fuller in the body. Males may display to females by extending fins and moving alongside them, though detailed aquarium observations of courtship in this species specifically are sparse in the published hobby literature.

Conditioning requires clean, well-oxygenated water, a varied diet including natural algae growth, and stable or gently fluctuating temperature consistent with seasonal cues from the subtropical Paraguay basin. Multiple specimens in a large, well-planted aquarium give the best chance of successful pairings. Males do not show aggressive territorial behaviour toward one another in the manner of cave-spawning plecos, and mixed groups are feasible in a spacious tank.

Breeding

Farlowella paraguayensis spawns by depositing adhesive eggs on flat, smooth surfaces — typically plant stems, aquarium glass, broad leaves, or smooth sections of driftwood. This open-surface spawning distinguishes the twig catfishes from the cave-spawning Ancistrinae. The male guards and fans the egg cluster throughout incubation, removing infertile or fungused eggs.

Fry are elongate from hatching, already bearing a recognisable twig catfish shape, and begin rasping biofilm surfaces shortly after the yolk sac is absorbed. They are sensitive to water quality in early life and require a well-established tank with ample algal film to survive. Incubation period and typical clutch size are not precisely published for this species, but related Farlowella kept in aquaria typically hatch within several days at temperatures around 77–79 °F.

In the aquarium

Farlowella paraguayensis is a rewarding but demanding species for the experienced loricariid keeper. Its primary requirements are exceptional water quality, an established algal crop to graze, and a tank furnished with fine-textured plants, smooth driftwood, and broad-leaved aquatic plants (Echinodorus, Anubias) that provide both food surface and resting sites.

A tank of 20 US gal or more with a mature filter is the minimum practical setup; 30 US gal offers more stable water chemistry and room for a small group. Temperature should be maintained between 22 and 81 °F — the lower end of this range, reflecting the subtropical origin, is appropriate. pH 6.5–7.5 and soft to medium hardness suit the species well. The fish is sensitive to poor water quality and elevated nitrates; weekly partial water changes of 25–30% are recommended.

The twig catfish is peaceful and essentially defenceless against fin-nipping tankmates. Suitable companions are small, gentle characids, calm livebearers, small Corydoras, and dwarf cichlids that do not harass slow-moving bottom fish. Avoid any aggressive or fin-nipping species. The fish's camouflage makes it easy to overlook in a densely planted tank — keepers should ensure it is receiving supplementary food and not being outcompeted at feeding time.

Conservation

Farlowella paraguayensis is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (2020 assessment), based on its distribution across the Paraguay River basin, which spans a large area with no evidence of major targeted exploitation or severe range-wide habitat loss. The species is not the subject of significant commercial fishery pressure.

The Paraguay basin does, however, face substantial environmental pressures. Agricultural expansion — particularly soybean cultivation and cattle ranching — drives deforestation and sedimentation across the basin, which can affect the clear, vegetation-rich slow-water habitats the species depends upon. The Pantanal, a globally significant wetland within the basin, is under increasing pressure from surrounding land-use change and altered hydrological regimes. While F. paraguayensis is not currently considered threatened, the sensitivity of twig catfishes to habitat change — particularly the loss of aquatic macrophyte beds and submerged wood — means that ongoing monitoring of basin-wide trends is warranted.
