Taxonomy & naming
Pareiorhaphis splendens was originally described by Carlos R. S. F. Bizerril in 1995 as Hemipsilichthys splendens, in the Acta Biologica Leopoldensia (volume 17, number 1, pages 115–117, figures 1–2), from specimens collected in the Rio Cubatão near Joinville, Santa Catarina state, Brazil. The transfer to Pareiorhaphis followed Pereira and Reis (2005), who published a revision of the loricariid genera Hemipsilichthys and Isbrueckerichthys and resurrected the genus Pareiorhaphis Miranda Ribeiro, 1918, placing P. splendens in that genus along with most other former Hemipsilichthys.
The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Pareiorhaphis splendens (Bizerril, 1995) as the valid combination; Hemipsilichthys splendens Bizerril, 1995 is a junior synonym. Pareiorhaphis currently contains approximately 27 valid species, all endemic to Brazil and distributed across Atlantic coastal river drainages from Rio Grande do Sul north to Bahia, plus the upper Paraná and Iguaçu systems.
The subfamily assignment has been debated in the literature. FishBase currently lists the genus under Hypoptopomatinae, but the primary revisionary work (Pereira & Reis 2005; Armbruster 2004) places Pareiorhaphis within Neoplecostominae, a position followed by PlanetCatfish and most subsequent systematic treatments. Neoplecostominae is used here per Pereira & Reis (2005).
Morphology
Adults reach a maximum of 2.5 in standard length (SL), making P. splendens among the smaller Pareiorhaphis species. The body form is slender and moderately depressed, covered in bony scutes. Coloration is not described in detail in the original description beyond the specific epithet splendens ('shining'), suggesting a notably lustrous or iridescent appearance — a reference to the metallic sheen on the scutes that is characteristic of several Pareiorhaphis species.
The genus is characterised by a suite of morphological features that distinguish it from other neoplecostomines: the canal plate is firmly articulated to the preopercle (rather than loosely connected), and adult males develop conspicuously hypertrophied odontodes across much of the body surface, giving them a distinctively hispid (bristly) appearance. The fin formula recorded by FishBase gives one dorsal spine and 7 soft dorsal-fin rays, and 6 anal soft rays, with the pelvic fin spine reaching 33.7–52.4% of SL. The cleithral width is approximately 52.7% SL.
Sexual dimorphism is pronounced in breeding males, which develop the hypertrophied body odontodes described above. The genus epithet — from Greek pareia (jaw) and rhaphis (needle) — refers to the needle-like odontodes on the cheek and jaw region that are particularly developed in males.
Habitat
The type locality is the Rio Cubatão do Norte, near Joinville, Santa Catarina state, Brazil (approximately 26.2°S, 48.9°W). This is a small, Atlantic-draining coastal river typical of the Serra do Mar escarpment zone of southern Brazil: clear, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated, with gravel and boulder substrates, strongly seasonal rainfall, and riparian Atlantic Forest. Additional records place P. splendens in the Morretes municipality, Paraná state, also in Atlantic coastal drainage basins.
FishBase notes that specimens have been caught in small crevices formed by loose stones in clear, fast-flowing water with a gravel-and-rocks bottom composition — a tightly defined microhabitat consistent with the rheophilic ecology shared across Neoplecostominae. The water in these coastal Serra do Mar streams is typically soft and slightly acidic (pH 6.0–7.0), cool (64–75 °F), with very low dissolved solids. Water temperatures show pronounced seasonal variation: warmer in austral summer (December–March) and substantially cooler in winter.
Suedamerika Fans database records the species from the Rio Cubatão do Norte specifically, with sympatric species including Pareiorhaphis azygolechis, Rineloricaria aequalicuspis, Cambeva davisi, and several Astyanax and Gymnotus species — reflecting the characteristic Atlantic forest coastal fish community of southern Brazil.
Feeding
Pareiorhaphis and other neoplecostomines are benthic scrapers and aufwuchs grazers, exploiting the periphyton, biofilm, and fine detritus that colonise rock surfaces in fast-flowing streams. The firm attachment of the canal plate to the preopercle is part of the mechanical reinforcement needed to maintain suction-disc grip against strong current while rasping; the needle-like odontodes of males may also serve a function in holding against substrate.
Gut content data for Pareiorhaphis species in general show a diet dominated by algae (primarily diatoms and filamentous forms), detrital organic matter, and incidental invertebrates. No specialised feeding behaviour distinct from other neoplecostomines has been documented for P. splendens specifically.
In the aquarium, the same approach as for any rheophilic loricariid applies: sinking algae wafers and spirulina discs form the dietary core, supplemented by blanched soft vegetables (zucchini, cucumber, lettuce) and occasional invertebrate foods. Smooth rock surfaces and clean glass panels on which algae can develop provide natural foraging substrates. The species does not require driftwood in the manner of wood-eating plecos.
Mating
No specific courtship observations for P. splendens appear in the published literature, and the species has no captive breeding records on PlanetCatfish as of 2025. The reproductive biology of the genus is inferred from related neoplecostomines and from the morphological adaptations visible in adult males.
The hypertrophied body odontodes of mature males are a sexually selected trait common across the Neoplecostominae. These structures presumably play a role in male–male competition for spawning territories and possibly in direct contact with females during courtship. Males in breeding condition in aquaria are likely to be territorial toward conspecifics.
Given the cool, fast-flowing native habitat, reproductive conditioning in captivity would logically involve providing strong current, clean and well-oxygenated water, and smooth flat rock surfaces as potential spawning substrates. A temperature cycle mimicking the seasonal variation of southern Brazil — with a cooler phase (64–68 °F) in austral winter and warmer phase (72–75 °F) in summer — may trigger breeding activity.
Breeding
Captive breeding of Pareiorhaphis splendens has not been documented. Information on breeding mode is inferred from the genus's close relatives and general neoplecostominae biology.
Neoplecostomines are presumed to be substrate-spawning loricariids that deposit adhesive eggs on or under rocky surfaces in fast-flowing water, with some degree of parental care by the male. The distinctive body odontodes of male Pareiorhaphis may assist in anchoring the male against the substrate during spawning. Without confirmed aquarium breeding accounts, specifics of clutch size, incubation period, and fry care cannot be stated for P. splendens.
Suedamerika Fans database lists breeding as 'unknown' for this species. Aquarists who succeed in keeping this species long-term under appropriate current, temperature cycle, and water chemistry conditions would make a meaningful contribution to the documentation of this poorly known species.
In the aquarium
Pareiorhaphis splendens is not a species commonly encountered in the aquarium trade. It lacks an L-number and is absent from standard import lists; specimens reaching hobbyists would most likely arrive through specialist collectors of Brazilian Atlantic forest fish fauna. The German-language database Suedamerika Fans recommends a minimum tank size of 31.5 in (approximately 25 US gal) and lists the temperature range as 68–75 °F, consistent with the cool-water Atlantic-coast environment.
The non-negotiable requirement is vigorous water movement. A powerhead or high-flow canister filter delivering strong, directional current across a rocky substrate replicates the fast-flowing cobble streams of the Serra do Mar. Standard aquarium heaters should be set to the lower end of the tropical range; this is not a species suited to warm, sluggish community tanks optimised for Amazonian fish. Water should be soft (hardness below 10°dH), pH 6.0–7.0, and nitrate kept low through regular partial water changes.
Smooth rounded cobbles, slate, and flat stones provide both territory and potential spawning sites; fine sand fills the substrate gaps. The fish is peaceful toward non-competitive species and will cohabit with small South American tetras, Corydoras, and other peaceful catfishes. It is primarily nocturnal or crepuscular. Not recommended for mixed-pleco tanks where territory competition with larger species would be an issue.
Conservation
Pareiorhaphis splendens is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, assessed in November 2018. The assessment reflects the species' occurrence across multiple locations in the Atlantic coastal drainages of Santa Catarina and Paraná states, without evidence of significant population decline or range contraction at the time of assessment.
However, the Atlantic Forest biome of southern Brazil is one of the world's most threatened biodiversity hotspots: original forest cover has been reduced to roughly 12–16% of its historical extent, and the coastal catchments of Santa Catarina and Paraná face ongoing pressure from urbanisation (Joinville is one of Brazil's most industrialised cities), agricultural conversion, water abstraction, and pollution. Species relying on clear, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated streams in this region are inherently vulnerable to land-use change that increases sedimentation and reduces dissolved oxygen.
The LC assessment should not be read as indicating a secure future for P. splendens. Ongoing monitoring of population status in the Cubatão and connected drainages would be warranted. The species is not listed under CITES and receives no specific legal protection beyond general Brazilian biodiversity legislation.
