Taxonomy & naming

Deuterodon longirostris was originally described by Franz Steindachner in 1907, placed in a broader genus before the circumscription of Deuterodon was clarified. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records the valid name with a parenthetical authority — (Steindachner, 1907) — indicating it has been moved from the genus in which it was originally described. The species belongs to Deuterodon, a genus of small characins in the family Characidae whose phylogenetic placement within that large family has been treated variously as incertae sedis in modern systematic revisions.

Deuterodon is an Atlantic coastal-drainage genus of South America, centred on the coastal river systems of southeastern Brazil. It sits within the tribe Stevardini or nearby clades in recent phylogenomic arrangements, though the precise placement continues to be debated as more comprehensive multi-locus studies are published. The species-level taxonomy of Deuterodon is similarly unsettled, with species boundaries in the group having been revised multiple times, and D. longirostris is distinguished from congeners by morphological characters including snout length and proportional measurements — the specific epithet referring directly to its elongated snout.

The genus name Deuterodon means 'second tooth' or 'posterior tooth' in Greek (deuteros, second; odon, tooth), alluding to tooth characters used in the original genus diagnosis. Morphology

Were it to be kept, the general approach appropriate to small Atlantic-drainage Brazilian tetras would apply: a well-filtered aquarium with good water movement and high oxygen levels, soft to moderately hard water with pH near neutral, subtropical temperatures consistent with its native range (cooler than typical tropical set-ups), and a diet of small live and frozen invertebrate foods supplemented with fine prepared diets. As a schooling characin it would benefit from the company of conspecifics. Given its conservation status and narrow endemism, trade specimens should be verified as legally and sustainably sourced.
