Taxonomy & naming
Pareiorhaphis stomias was originally described as Hemipsilichthys stomias by Pereira and Reis in 1999, in Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters. The combination Pareiorhaphis stomias (Pereira & Reis, 2002) reflects the transfer effected by Pereira in 2005, when he resurrected the genus Pareiorhaphis Miranda Ribeiro, 1918 (Neotropical Ichthyology 3(2):272) and simultaneously described a new species from the Rio Iguaçu basin. The 2002 date of combination — rather than the original 1999 description date — is the date used by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) and FishBase (speccode 59716), following nomenclatural convention for the new combination.
Pareiorhaphis is placed in the subfamily Neoplecostominae (Loricariidae), a group of small rheophilic catfishes distributed in Atlantic coastal drainages and upland rivers of southeastern and southern Brazil. This placement is supported by the phylogenetic work of Pereira and Reis (2017) in Zootaxa 4264(1):75, among other studies. FishBase lists the species under Hypoptopomatinae — an alternative arrangement reflecting ongoing debate in Loricariidae subfamily classification; this site follows the Neoplecostominae assignment consistent with Pereira's own taxonomy.

Morphology

The species is distinguished within its genus by a notably wide mouth — the trait encoded in its name — along with a low caudal peduncle depth (9.7–11.3% SL) and a high tooth count: 94–120 teeth per dentary. The dorsal surface of both the body and head is covered in distinctive black spots on a lighter ground colour, providing a useful field identification character. Meristics include D1,7; A1,5.
The general loricariid armour of overlapping bony scutes is present. Like other members of Pareiorhaphis, the species has the inferior, sucker-like mouth adapted to surface grazing on hard substrates in flowing water. No sexual dimorphism data specific to this species are documented in reviewed sources, though the genus as a whole follows typical loricariid patterns in which interopercular odontode development may differ between sexes.
Habitat
The type locality is the Rio Mãe Luzia near Forquilha, Santa Catarina state, Brazil (approximately 28.461°S, 49.502°W), within the Lagoa Santo Antônio drainage — an Atlantic coastal system flowing from the Serra Geral highlands to the sea. Additional collection localities documented by suedamerikafans.de include the Rio São Bento near São Pedro, Rio Jordão, and Rio Braço do Norte, all Atlantic coastal drainages of Santa Catarina.
These rivers drain the steep eastern face of the Serra Geral, a plateau edge rising sharply from the Atlantic coastal plain. The resulting rivers are fast-flowing, cool, and well-oxygenated, with rocky substrates — the canonical neoplecostomine habitat. Feeding

Courtship and mating behaviour specific to Pareiorhaphis stomias have not been documented. For the rare researcher or specialist keeper, the ecological profile is informative: a cool-water (68–75 °F) rheophilic pleco from high-gradient, well-oxygenated streams in southern Brazil. A setup with strong current, smooth-to-rocky substrate, cool temperatures relative to most tropical loricariids, and biofilm-rich surfaces would be the logical starting point. The subtropical origin means the species is likely more cold-tolerant than Amazonian plecos, but sustained elevated temperatures above 79 °F would probably cause stress. Practical aquarium guidance cannot be offered further without documented keeping experience.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Pareiorhaphis stomias as Least Concern in November 2018. The species is restricted to Atlantic coastal drainages of Santa Catarina state — a relatively limited range — but no major threats have been documented, and populations in its fast-flowing highland river habitat appear stable. Santa Catarina's Atlantic coastal rivers are not free of pressure: agricultural runoff, plantation forestry, and small-scale hydroelectric development affect water quality and flow regimes in the Serra Geral drainage systems.
