A small hypoptopomatine catfish barely exceeding 1.5 in, Parotocinclus seridoensis is endemic to the semi-arid Caatinga of northeastern Brazil, where it shelters under large rocks in the clear, intermittent streams of the upper rio Piranhas-Açu basin. Its name references the Sertão do Seridó — a xeric landscape of sparse vegetation and seasonal drought — and the species clings to existence across just four known localities in a region where most rivers run dry for months each year.

Taxonomy & naming

Parotocinclus seridoensis was described by Telton Pedro Anselmo Ramos, Evaristo Barros-Neto, Heraldo Antonio Britski, and Flávio C.T. Lima in 2013 in Neotropical Ichthyology (volume 11, number 4; DOI: 10.1590/S1679-62252013000400006). The holotype — MZUSP 113422, a female of 1.5 in SL — was collected on 11 June 2012 from the rio Seridó at Caicó Municipality, Rio Grande do Norte State, Brazil (6°27'28.4"S 37°05'10.7"W). Additional paratypes, including the largest specimen at 1.5 in SL, were drawn from three further localities in the rio Piranhas-Açu basin spanning Rio Grande do Norte and Paraíba States.

The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) and FishBase both recognise the species as valid under the authorship Ramos, Barros-Neto, Britski & Lima, 2013. The genus Parotocinclus Eigenmann & Eigenmann, 1889 is placed in subfamily Hypoptopomatinae within Loricariidae.

Diagnostic characters include an abdomen that is almost naked except for a single row of elongate, reduced plates on each side; a rudimentary or absent adipose fin; bright, pale spots typically as large as or larger than the eye diameter arranged in two rows along the flanks; and an area at the anterior snout border, devoid of odontodes, shaped as an inverted V or U. These characters collectively distinguish P. seridoensis from other members of the genus.

The genus is notable for facultative air-breathing, a physiological adaptation consistent with life in seasonally oxygen-depleted or intermittent watercourses — a trait of particular relevance in the Caatinga environment.

Morphology

Parotocinclus seridoensis is a small catfish, with the holotype measuring 1.5 in SL and the largest known specimen reaching 1.5 in SL — a maximum standard length of approximately 1.5 in. FishBase lists maximum total length at 1.5 in, likely referring to standard length given the loricariid convention.

The body is depressed and covered in bony scutes in the loricariid fashion. The abdomen departs from the fully plated condition seen in some relatives: it is nearly naked, with only a single row of elongate, reduced lateral plates on each side — a character used in the original diagnosis. The adipose fin, present in many loricariids, is rudimentary or absent in this species.

Coloration is characterised by bright pale spots on the flanks; these are typically as large as or larger than the eye diameter and arranged in two distinct rows — a pattern that sets P. seridoensis apart visually from sympatric or congener species. The anterior snout margin bears a naked area shaped as an inverted V or U, lacking the odontodes found in closely related taxa.

Sexual dimorphism has not been described in detail for this species. In Parotocinclus generally, females tend to be broader-bodied when gravid, but no specific data are available for P. seridoensis from the primary literature.

Habitat

Parotocinclus seridoensis is known from four localities in the upper rio Piranhas-Açu basin of northeastern Brazil: the rio Seridó at Caicó (the type locality), the rio Piranhas at Pombal and at Jardim de Piranhas, and the rio Piancó at Ibiara — spanning the states of Rio Grande do Norte and Paraíba. This places it squarely within the Caatinga biome, the semi-arid scrubland of the Brazilian northeast characterised by drought-adapted thorny vegetation and rivers that are permanent in parts of their course but intermittent in others.

The Sertão do Seridó region where the type locality sits receives approximately 19.5 in of annual rainfall — low and irregular even by Caatinga standards. The original description records that specimens were collected from under large rocks in streams with moderate current and clear water. These microhabitats — stable refugia beneath smooth boulders — are common features of Caatinga stream beds and may buffer temperature and oxygen fluctuations during low-flow periods.

Water parameter guidance derived from aquarium sources indicates a range of 75–84 °F and pH 6.0–7.5, consistent with the slightly acidic to neutral waters typical of Caatinga drainages. The species is considered probably endemic to the semi-arid Caatinga, with its range apparently restricted to the Piranhas-Açu basin.

Feeding

Gut content analysis reported in the original description found benthic invertebrates in the diet of P. seridoensis, specifically Chironomidae (midge larvae) and Coleoptera (beetle) larvae. This is an unusual finding for a hypoptopomatine: most members of the subfamily are committed periphyton grazers, and the detection of animal prey suggests either opportunistic invertebrate feeding when invertebrate densities are high in the boulder-sheltered microhabitats, or a secondary feeding mode supplementing the typical algae–biofilm diet.

Aquarium sources describe the genus as a typical Parotocinclus herbivore and algae or biofilm grazer, consistent with the ventral disc-mouth morphology. The most accurate characterisation from combined sources is probably a mixed-mode feeder: primarily an aufwuchs and algae grazer that supplements its diet with benthic invertebrates when available.

Mating

Mating behaviour for Parotocinclus seridoensis has not been described in the primary literature. In Parotocinclus generally, some species are known to be facultative air-breathers — a trait that may be relevant during the dry season when dissolved oxygen drops in isolated stream pools. Whether this trait influences reproductive timing or behaviour in P. seridoensis is not recorded. This section will be expanded when observational data are available.

Breeding

Breeding biology for Parotocinclus seridoensis is undescribed in the primary literature, and the species has no known aquarium breeding record. The species has not entered the hobby in any significant way, so captive reproductive data do not exist. Small hypoptopomatines in related genera deposit adhesive eggs on sheltered substrates; whether P. seridoensis uses the under-rock microhabitat it favours in the wild as a spawning site is an open question.

In the aquarium

Parotocinclus seridoensis does not appear in the mainstream aquarium trade. Its restricted Caatinga distribution, small population across just four known localities, and Least Concern (but ecologically fragile) status mean wild collection for the hobby would be both logistically difficult and ecologically inadvisable. No captive-bred specimens are known to exist.

If the species were kept, the available parameter guidance — 75–84 °F, pH 6.0–7.5, minimum tank 20 US gal — provides a reasonable baseline. Given its microhabitat under large rocks in moderate-current streams, a tank furnished with smooth boulders and steady water movement would be more appropriate than a planted aquarium. Feeding on algae wafers, biofilm, and supplemental small invertebrate foods would reflect what is known of the diet.

Aquarists interested in Caatinga hypoptopomatines are more likely to encounter the more widespread Parotocinclus species from the same region, but none of those are common in the trade either. Honest assessment: this species is essentially absent from the hobby and likely to remain so.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Parotocinclus seridoensis as Least Concern (LC) in November 2018. Although the species has a restricted range — four localities in the upper Piranhas-Açu basin — it was apparently found at all four sites during surveys, and the assessment did not identify population trends sufficient to trigger a threatened category.

This does not mean the species is without conservation concern. The Caatinga is one of Brazil's most threatened biomes: it covers approximately 11% of the national territory but has been heavily cleared for subsistence agriculture, goat grazing, charcoal production, and increasingly for large-scale irrigated agriculture. Semi-arid rivers in the northeast are subject to damming for water storage, which alters flow regimes, sediment dynamics, and the boulder-bed microhabitats that P. seridoensis depends on.

The rio Seridó basin in particular has been affected by water diversion and impoundment. A species distributed across only four known localities in a drought-prone region, dependent on specific boulder-stream microhabitats, is inherently vulnerable to stochastic events even if no single threat currently meets IUCN threshold criteria. Monitoring surveys and confirmation that populations remain stable across all four known sites would be a meaningful contribution to its status.
