Pterygoplichthys joselimaianus is the 'Gold-spot Pleco' of the Tocantins–Araguaia basin: a large, river-dwelling sailfin catfish registered as both L001 and L022 in the German DATZ L-number system, and one of the first loricariids to receive a formal L-code when these placeholder identifiers were introduced in the 1980s before scientific descriptions caught up with the trade. Described by Christian Weber in 1991 from the Rio Araguaia in Goiás state, Brazil, it reaches nearly 15.5 in standard length and carries the diagnostic Pterygoplichthys suite of features — a greatly enlarged sail-like dorsal fin, interlocking scute armour, and a tractable, algae-grazing disposition that made it an early favourite in European aquaria. Like other members of its genus it is a burrow-spawning fish with paternal brood care, a detritivore-herbivore with prodigious waste production, and a species that eventually outgrows the tanks of aquarists who buy it at 3 in without being told it will reach 35.

Taxonomy & naming

Pterygoplichthys joselimaianus was described by Christian Weber in 1991 in the Revue Suisse de Zoologie (volume 98, number 3, page 640), based on specimens collected from the Rio Araguaia at Aruanã, Goiás state, Brazil — the Araguaia being a major right-bank tributary of the Tocantins, itself flowing into the lower Amazon estuary. The type description placed the species directly in Pterygoplichthys Gill, 1858; the authority is therefore cited without parentheses, reflecting that no subsequent genus transfer was made before being listed with parentheses in some databases. FishBase and the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) cite the authority as (Weber, 1991) with parentheses, indicating the species was originally described in a different genus — specifically Glyptoperichthys — before being transferred to Pterygoplichthys; PlanetCatfish lists Glyptoperichthys joselimaianus as the synonym.

The species was recorded in the aquarium trade as L001 (the very first DATZ L-number, assigned in 1988 before its description) and L022. Both codes refer to the same taxon. The eponymous name honours Dr José Lima de Figueiredo, Brazilian ichthyologist and former curator of fishes at the Museu de Zoologia da Universidade de São Paulo.

Phylogenetic context: Pterygoplichthys belongs to tribe Hypostomini of subfamily Hypostominae, one of the two large subfamilies within Loricariidae (Armbruster, 2004). The genus is diagnosed among loricariids by its greatly enlarged dorsal fin with 10 or more rays — most other loricariids have 7 or fewer. Mitochondrial sequence data for P. joselimaianus (12S and 16S rRNA genes) were included in the phylogenetic study of Montoya-Burgos et al. (1997), among the earliest molecular analyses of loricariid relationships.

Morphology

Pterygoplichthys joselimaianus is a large, armoured catfish. FishBase records a maximum standard length of 15.5 in; PlanetCatfish cites 12 in (12 in) SL. Total length including the caudal fin of large wild fish likely approaches 17.5–19.5 in. The body is strongly dorso-ventrally flattened and broad anteriorly, tapering to the caudal peduncle, covered dorsally and laterally with interlocking bony scutes bearing small odontodes.

The distinguishing character of the genus is the greatly enlarged, sail-like dorsal fin — PlanetCatfish's identification note is succinct: 'Ten or more dorsal rays (usually more than 10) indicates that it's a Pterygoplichthys. Most other plecos have 8 or fewer rays.' In P. joselimaianus the dorsal fin is fully erectable and visually dramatic in a healthy, undisturbed fish.

Colouration of P. joselimaianus: the dorsal surface is dark brown to olive-grey with a pattern of yellow to golden spots — the basis of the common name 'Gold-spot Pleco.' This spotted pattern distinguishes it from P. pardalis, which has worm-track reticulate markings rather than distinct spots; the abdominal surface of P. joselimaianus is pale with spots or a reticulate pattern, and careful inspection of the belly pattern can aid species-level identification within the genus.

Sexual dimorphism in the genus is subtle. PlanetCatfish describes the most reliable method: 'Comparison of the genital papilla in mature fish shows the differences in the sexes to the trained eye. In males this is a small yet thick stump which noticeably protrudes from the fish's undercarriage. In females it is less obvious and is recessed or lies flat with the body.' Males may also develop more pronounced pectoral and interopercular odontodes. Females are broader through the body when gravid.

Habitat

Pterygoplichthys joselimaianus is native to the Tocantins River basin and the Rio Araguaia, a major right-bank tributary, both in central Brazil. The Tocantins is one of Brazil's great river systems, draining the Goiás and Pará plateaux southward before discharging into the lower Amazon estuary near Marajó Island. The Araguaia, where the type series was collected at Aruanã, is a large, seasonally variable tropical river crossing the cerrado (Brazilian savanna) at low to mid elevation.

FishBase records distribution from the Tocantins River basin; PlanetCatfish records it from the Amazon, Lower Amazon, and Tocantins drainage areas. The species is adapted to the seasonally variable conditions of a large cerrado river — warm, moderately turbid to clear, with water temperatures of 75–84 °F (FishBase) and fluctuating water levels across the year. During the wet season the Araguaia floods its floodplain substantially, creating extensive várzea habitats that loricariids exploit for feeding and spawning. During the dry season, water levels drop and the river concentrates.

Like other Pterygoplichthys, P. joselimaianus is a facultative air-breather (FishBase, Ref. 126274), using vascularised extensions of the stomach to supplement gill respiration with atmospheric air when dissolved oxygen is low — a physiological adaptation of great value during dry-season concentration and organic loading. The species is associated with woody debris accumulations, submerged banks, and silty to sandy substrate typical of larger tropical South American rivers.

The species is benthic and primarily nocturnal in its foraging, spending daylight hours largely immobile under cover.

Feeding

Pterygoplichthys joselimaianus is a benthic detritivore-herbivore: the dietary foundation is aufwuchs (the periphyton community of algae, bacteria, and associated microorganisms on submerged surfaces), detrital organic matter, and biofilm scraped from hard substrate using the robust, spatulate-toothed sucker mouth. FishBase records a trophic level of 2.0 for the species — the minimum, reflecting a near-exclusive plant and detritus base — and classifies it as feeding on algae and associated substrates.

In the wild, P. joselimaianus grazes continuously on available surfaces — rocks, woody debris, submerged roots, and the organic-rich silts of floodplain rivers. PlanetCatfish describes it as 'omnivorous and a good algae eater, especially when young.' The species accepts an extremely wide range of foods in captivity, which has contributed to its historical popularity as a 'tank cleaner.'

In the aquarium, the species grazes algae from glass and décor effectively when young and when algae growth is adequate. Adults require substantial daily supplemental feeding: sinking herbivore wafers, blanched courgette (zucchini), cucumber, spinach, sweet potato, and spirulina-based sinking pellets. Quality driftwood (bogwood) should be permanently available; the fish rasps wood surfaces for biofilm and microorganisms, and lignin intake may be beneficial to gut flora. Unlike wood-specialist Panaque and Panaqolus, P. joselimaianus does not consume wood as a dietary core but benefits from the associated biofilm.

Protein-heavy foods (bloodworm, meaty sinking pellets) should not predominate; the gut architecture is adapted for high-volume, low-nutrition fibrous material and excess protein causes digestive stress.

Mating

Pterygoplichthys joselimaianus breeds seasonally in the wild, synchronised with the hydrology of the Tocantins-Araguaia system. In the Araguaia basin, spawning appears associated with the falling and low-water phases of the annual flood cycle, when exposed earthen riverbanks provide sites for burrow construction.

Males excavate burrows in compacted earth or clay banks at or just above the waterline — a behaviour thoroughly documented for other Pterygoplichthys species (particularly P. pardalis) and consistent across the genus. Burrow entrances are typically round, 4–6 in diameter, leading into a tunnel of variable length (up to 5 ft has been recorded for the genus) with a terminal spawning chamber. Males display territorial behaviour around burrow entrances, using lateral fin spreading and mouth-gaping to deter rival males.

Burrow construction by large populations of P. joselimaianus in the Araguaia system has practical implications for riverbank stability; high densities of burrowing Pterygoplichthys accelerate bank erosion, a phenomenon observed and documented for this genus in invaded river systems globally.

Captive spawning of P. joselimaianus has not been reported (PlanetCatfish records no breeding reports for the species). Replicating the specific conditions required — very large tanks or ponds, soft earthen substrate for burrowing, appropriate seasonal temperature and photoperiod — is beyond the scope of typical home aquaria. Commercial production occurs on outdoor fish farms in tropical regions.

Breeding

Pterygoplichthys joselimaianus is a burrow spawner with paternal guarding of the egg mass. Based on data from closely related P. pardalis (the best-studied member of the genus), the breeding biology can be described with confidence: the female deposits adhesive eggs inside the terminal chamber of the male's burrow; the male guards the burrow entrance, fans the eggs, and continues to guard the fry after hatching.

PlanetCatfish records the egg mass as containing 'thousands of eggs' of bright orange colour for the genus — clutch sizes far exceeding those of cave-spawning Hypostominae like Hypancistrus. Incubation in field-temperature conditions (approximately 79–82 °F) takes roughly 7–10 days. Fry are large at hatching, retaining prominent yolk sacs for several days before becoming free-swimming and beginning to graze algae.

Captive breeding has not been reported for P. joselimaianus specifically. Commercial production of the species (and of Pterygoplichthys generally) is conducted on outdoor fish farms in Brazil, Thailand, Singapore, and Indonesia, where pond size and natural conditions allow normal burrow-construction and seasonal cycling. The vast majority of aquarium trade specimens are farm-raised.

For hobbyists, the practical upshot is that breeding P. joselimaianus in a standard aquarium is essentially impossible; if breeding outcomes with large sailfin plecos are desired, outdoor pond settings in subtropical or tropical regions are the only realistic context.

In the aquarium

Pterygoplichthys joselimaianus shares the fundamental aquarium-keeping problem common to all large Pterygoplichthys: it is sold as a 2.5–4 in juvenile for a modest price and described as an algae cleaner, but it grows to 14–15.5 in, lives 15–20 years, and produces a volume of waste proportional to its size. An adult requires an aquarium of at minimum 105 US gal (a 71 in long tank) with high-capacity biological filtration and substantial weekly water changes. This size requirement is consistently undersold at point of purchase.

That said, P. joselimaianus is a hardy and adaptable fish within a generous aquarium. Temperature 75–84 °F, pH 6.5–7.5, moderate hardness. It tolerates a wide range of conditions and is resistant to common pathogens, benefiting from the toughness characteristic of large riverine loricariids. Good water flow is appreciated. Water changes of 30–50% weekly are necessary given the bioload.

Aquascape should prioritise large pieces of bogwood as both dietary supplement and hiding cover, smooth rocks, and open areas of sandy substrate for resting. The species will methodically rasp every accessible surface for algae and biofilm, which makes it effective at algae management on décor and glass but also means fine-leaved plants will be consumed or dislodged. Hardy plants attached to wood (Anubias, Microsorum) survive better.

P. joselimaianus is generally peaceful with fish of similar size. It does not tolerant conspecifics in confined space; multiple adults require a very large aquarium with clearly defined territories and hiding sites. The species may rasp mucus from slow-moving smooth-skinned fish (large discus, angelfish) if underfed — this is resolved by consistent supplemental feeding and adequate space.

The gold-spot coloration of juveniles is attractive and drives initial purchase; adults darken somewhat and the spots become relatively less visible on the larger body, though remain present. The fish's large size, high waste output, and long lifespan make it a significant commitment unsuitable for most general community setups. Potential purchasers should understand that rehoming a 14 in pleco is difficult; release into waterways is not an ethical option.

Conservation

Pterygoplichthys joselimaianus is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, assessed 7 November 2018. The assessment reflects the species' native distribution across the Tocantins–Araguaia basin — a large river system — and the absence of evidence for population-level decline within its native range. The Tocantins is a river under substantial industrial pressure, however: the Tucuruí Dam (1984), one of the world's largest hydroelectric reservoirs, impounds the lower Tocantins and has profoundly altered the hydrology and migratory ecology of the basin. The Araguaia, while less impounded, faces accelerating pressure from soybean agriculture, deforestation, and cattle-ranching across the cerrado.

For P. joselimaianus specifically, large-bodied benthic loricariids adapted to generalist feeding appear less sensitive to reservoir formation than migratory fish that depend on unobstructed longitudinal river connectivity. The species likely persists in both free-flowing and lacustrine reservoir conditions. The IUCN LC assessment is therefore defensible on current evidence, though systematic monitoring of population status in the Tucuruí reservoir zone and the free-flowing Araguaia tributaries would strengthen the data underpinning it.

Outside its native range, P. joselimaianus has not been identified as a major invasive species in the manner of P. pardalis or P. multiradiatus, which have established feral populations across five continents. The aquarium trade has historically distributed P. joselimaianus widely under the name 'gold-spot pleco' (L001/L022), and isolated feral occurrences are plausible in warm-water systems globally, though not as thoroughly documented as for pardalis.

Responsible aquarium practice — never releasing specimens into waterways, sourcing captive-bred fish where available, and ensuring purchasers understand adult size — remains the critical contribution hobbyists can make.
