Pterygoplichthys multiradiatus is the Orinoco sailfin catfish — a flagship species of the sailfin pleco group that reaches 19.5 in and wears a sweeping, multi-rayed dorsal fin like a sail raised above the river current. Native to the Orinoco basin of Venezuela and Colombia, it has become one of the most widely traded and most frequently released plecos on the planet, establishing feral breeding populations from Florida to Taiwan. For the advanced aquarist, it represents both a genuine biotope specimen from the Orinoco and a cautionary tale about the consequences of releasing large, burrowing catfishes into non-native waters.

Taxonomy & naming

Pterygoplichthys multiradiatus was originally described as Ancistrus multiradiatus by John Hancock in 1828 in the Zoological Journal of London (vol. 4, p. 246), based on material from the Orinoco system — the type locality is stated as 'Demerara, Guyana' on old labels but is now considered probably to refer to the Orinoco drainage near Santa Catalina, Venezuela (PlanetCatfish). The species was redescribed and placed in the current combination by Günther in 1864, and again by Weber in 1992. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the valid combination Pterygoplichthys multiradiatus (Hancock, 1828).

Synonyms include Liposarcus multiradiatus (the combination used in much of the older 20th-century aquarium literature) and Hypostomus multiradiatus Kner, 1854. The genus Liposarcus, long used for the sailfin plecos, is now a synonym of Pterygoplichthys (Armbruster 2004). The genus Pterygoplichthys itself is defined by having 10 or more rays in the dorsal fin — the most commonly cited diagnostic feature that separates it from Hypostomus (which has 7–8 dorsal rays) and from Ancistrus.

Armbruster (2004) confirmed the monophyly of Pterygoplichthys and its placement in the tribe Pterygoplichthyini within Hypostominae. The genus contains roughly 15 described species, of which P. multiradiatus and P. pardalis (Amazon sailfin pleco) are the two most commonly traded and the two most established invasive species globally. Molecular phylogeographic work by Montoya-Burgos and Weber (referenced in FishBase) used mitochondrial D-loop sequences to resolve relationships within the genus.

Morphology

Pterygoplichthys multiradiatus is a large, heavily built armoured catfish. FishBase records a maximum total length of 19.5 in; PlanetCatfish lists 19.5 in SL. The species matures at roughly 13 in (first maturation length per FishBase), placing it among the largest plecos widely available in the hobby.

The defining external feature is the large dorsal fin, with 10–14 branched rays, which can be erected to an impressive height relative to the body depth — giving the genus its 'sailfin' name. In contrast, most other plecos (Hypostomus, Ancistrus) have 7–8 dorsal rays and a much smaller fin. This ray count is the easiest field identification character for the genus.

Body coloration in P. multiradiatus consists of a dark brown to grey-brown ground colour marked with a reticulated pattern of pale cream or yellowish lines and spots, forming a 'worm-track' or leopard-like pattern across the body and fins. The pattern varies between individuals and populations; similar coloration is found in the closely related P. pardalis. The ventral surface is pale and bears the series of abdominal plates typical of the genus.

The ventral sucker disc is large and powerful, adapted for clinging to hard substrate in strong current. The pectoral spines are robust and bear numerous fine odontodes. Sexual dimorphism is detectable in mature fish: the genital papilla of males is a short, thick, protruding stump visible on the ventral surface, while in females it is flatter and less conspicuous (PlanetCatfish).

Habitat

In its native range, Pterygoplichthys multiradiatus is distributed through the Orinoco River basin of Venezuela and Colombia. FishBase gives coordinates of approximately 10°N–1°N, 68°W–61°W for this species. The native habitat encompasses a wide range of Orinoco lowland environments: main-channel margins with rocky substrate, river banks, weedy floodplain lakes, seasonally inundated lagoons, and mud-bottomed canals (FishBase).

The Orinoco floodplain is subject to dramatic seasonal fluctuation: during the wet season (May–November) vast areas of savanna (Llanos) are inundated and water levels rise many metres; in the dry season (December–April) the floodplain shrinks, concentrating fish in shrinking water bodies. P. multiradiatus tolerates both extremes — it is a facultative air-breather, capable of gulping atmospheric oxygen from the surface when dissolved oxygen falls in stagnant floodplain pools.

Water parameters in the Orinoco lowlands range widely seasonally: temperatures 73–81 °F, pH 6.5–7.8, moderate hardness (FishBase). The species has demonstrated exceptional environmental tolerance in its introduced range — it has established populations in the warm freshwaters of Florida, Hawaii, the Philippines, Taiwan, and elsewhere — tolerating temperatures from approximately 59 °F (survival only, not growth) to above 95 °F, broad pH ranges, and hypoxic conditions.

Feeding

Pterygoplichthys multiradiatus is an opportunistic omnivore with a strong bias toward plant matter, algae, and organic detritus. FishBase describes it as nocturnal, feeding on algae, worms, insect larvae, and other bottom-dwelling aquatic animals. Studies on introduced populations in the USA have documented consumption of algae, detritus, higher plant material, invertebrates, and even fish eggs.

The species grazes periphyton and filamentous algae from hard surfaces using the broad ventral mouth and spatulate teeth. In turbid or mud-bottomed waters it forages on organic sediment. In the aquarium its feeding behaviour is broadly similar: it grazes algae from tank glass and decor, forages across the substrate for sinking foods, and accepts virtually all sinking or bottom-presented foods.

As an aquarium fish it can be offered algae wafers, sinking cichlid or catfish pellets, blanched vegetables (zucchini, cucumber, sweet potato, spinach, peas), and occasional meaty supplementation. The species is highly efficient at stripping algae from glass in young individuals; larger adults become less effective algae-cleaners relative to their biomass and bioload. The food-to-waste ratio in large specimens means that heavy filtration is essential.

Mating

In the wild, Pterygoplichthys multiradiatus spawns during the wet season, when rising water temperatures and flooding of the Llanos provide optimal conditions. The spawning peak is once a year (FishBase, ref. 56986). Males are territorial around burrow entrances and display to females approaching the burrow. The genital papilla provides the most reliable sex differentiation: male papilla is short, thick, and protruding; female papilla is flat and less visible.

Males excavate or maintain burrow tunnels in firm riverbank substrate — tunnels of 3–7 ft length have been recorded for Pterygoplichthys in the literature. The male defends the burrow entrance, attracting females and guarding the eggs once deposited. In introduced populations in the United States, burrow excavation has been extensively documented, with dense burrow colonies observed in river banks in Florida and Texas (FWS ecological risk screening summary 2013; EDDMapS records).

Capture of Pterygoplichthys for the aquarium trade from wild populations across Venezuela and Colombia occurs at scale; the species is also mass-produced in fish farms in Southeast Asia and Florida, which supply most of the 'common pleco' trade globally.

Breeding

Captive breeding of Pterygoplichthys multiradiatus has not been reported in standard aquarium conditions (PlanetCatfish breeding report: none on file). The burrow-excavation spawning strategy requires soft riverbank substrate with room to dig tunnels of significant length — conditions essentially impossible to replicate in home aquaria. Industrial-scale outdoor pond operations in Southeast Asia and Florida have succeeded in captive propagation, but these are essentially semi-natural systems.

In nature, the male occupies a tunnel burrow in a river bank and the female deposits eggs inside the tunnel. FishBase notes the egg mass for Pterygoplichthys is described as 'bright orange eggs' numbering in the thousands; fecundity data for P. multiradiatus specifically cite up to 1,983 eggs per spawning (FishBase, ref. 56986). After spawning, the male guards the egg mass and the newly hatched larvae within the burrow. Larvae are reported to develop within the burrow for some time before emerging as free-swimming juveniles.

The mass fecundity, rapid growth (fish can reach 30+ cm in their first year under good conditions), and early sexual maturity contribute to the species' success as an invasive organism in warm introduced-range waters.

In the aquarium

Pterygoplichthys multiradiatus is among the most commonly sold 'common plecos' in the world trade, often labelled simply as 'plecostomus' or 'sailfin pleco' in fish shops, where juveniles are appealing algae-eaters at 2–3 in. The problem is growth: within 12–18 months a well-fed specimen will reach 8–10 in, and adults routinely exceed 15.5 in. Few hobbyists are prepared for this and large plecos are frequently released into waterways — a practice that has caused serious ecological harm in many countries.

For an aquarist committed to long-term care, the requirements are substantial: a minimum tank size of 130 US gal for a single adult, strong mechanical and biological filtration to handle the considerable bioload, and good water movement. Water parameters should reflect the Orinoco: temperature 73–81 °F, pH 6.5–7.8, moderate hardness. The species is not demanding in terms of water chemistry but requires well-oxygenated water — strong surface agitation is important.

The tank should provide very large cave structures (large-bore pipes, hollow bogwood), open substrate for foraging, and ideally areas of moderate current. Large, anchored hardy plants (Anubias, Vallisneria) are compatible with this species if robust enough. Juveniles are more active algae-grazers than adults; large adults do less algae cleaning relative to the bioload they generate.

Compatibility with other species is generally good; despite its size, P. multiradiatus is not aggressive toward tankmates. It should not be housed with species that nip its long fin rays or compete for caves. Appropriate tankmates include large cichlids, large characins, and other large catfishes robust enough to hold their own.

Conservation

Pterygoplichthys multiradiatus was assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN Red List in 2020 (assessor: Jonathan Armbruster), reflecting that the species has a secure native range in the Orinoco basin and no evidence of population decline in its home waters. In its native range no major threats have been identified at the species level.

The conservation picture is dramatically complicated by the species' global invasive status. Established feral populations are confirmed in Florida, Hawaii, Taiwan, the Philippines, Puerto Rico, and multiple other warm-climate regions (FishBase introductions data). In Florida, populations in the Peace River, Hillsborough River, and Tampa Bay tributaries are large and growing; in Taiwan, the species now dominates many lowland rivers. Ecological impacts include burrow erosion of river banks, sediment disturbance, competition with native species for food and habitat, and predation on fish eggs.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has produced ecological risk screening summaries for P. multiradiatus, and several U.S. states and territories have classified it as a regulated invasive species. In the Orinoco basin itself, wild collection for the ornamental trade is significant, and the long-term sustainability of wild harvest is not well monitored. The IUCN assessment notes population trend as unknown.

The primary conservation message for hobbyists is unambiguous: Pterygoplichthys should never be released into waterways. Unwanted specimens should be returned to a fish shop, donated to a zoo or aquarium, or humanely euthanised — never set free.
