Pterygoplichthys ambrosettii is the sailfin pleco of the Paraná–Paraguay river system — a large, robust, spectacularly finned loricariid that has been known in science since the 1890s yet still frequently enters the hobby under the incorrect name Pterygoplichthys anisitsi, a junior synonym that was absorbed into P. ambrosettii when nomenclatural priority was settled. At nearly 21.5 in total length, this is unambiguously a big-tank fish, best admired in a species-appropriate environment rather than pressed into a community aquarium where its eventual size will overwhelm the setup.

Taxonomy & naming

Pterygoplichthys ambrosettii was described by Eduardo Ladislao Holmberg in 1893 in the Revista del Jardín Zoológico de Buenos Ayres (volume 1, no. 12, p. 354), from specimens collected in the Río Paraguay at Formosa, Argentina. The original combination was Liposarcus ambrosettii. The species has a complex nomenclatural history: for most of the twentieth century it was treated under the junior synonym Glyptoperichthys anisitsi (Eigenmann & Kennedy, 1903), itself also combined as Liposarcus anisitsi, and the older Holmberg name was at one point proposed as a nomen oblitum (forgotten name). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) currently recognises Pterygoplichthys ambrosettii (Holmberg, 1893) as the valid name, restoring nomenclatural priority; FishBase and PlanetCatfish follow the same treatment. The combination Pterygoplichthys anisitsi, though still widely encountered in aquarium literature and trade, is therefore a synonym.

The species belongs to subfamily Hypostominae, tribe Pterygoplichthyini sensu Armbruster (2004). The genus Pterygoplichthys is readily identified by its large, sail-like dorsal fin bearing ten or more dorsal rays — a count markedly higher than the seven to eight rays of most Hypostomus species and other large plecos with which it might be confused. The epithet ambrosettii honours Dr Juan Bautista Ambrosetti (1865–1917), an Argentinian archaeologist, anthropologist, and naturalist.

Morphology

Pterygoplichthys ambrosettii is a large pleco: FishBase records a maximum total length of 21.5 in for males and 21.5 in for females, with maximum published weight of 2.3 kg. Standard length at maturity is reached around 9.5 in (FishBase Lm), with animals continuing to grow throughout a long life. The body is heavily armoured with keeled bony scutes, giving the dorsum an angular, almost architectural appearance.

The most distinctive morphological feature is the dorsal fin — tall, broadly triangular, sail-like when fully erect, and supported by ten or more rays (usually 12–14 in this species). This elevated fin-ray count, visible even on juveniles, is the most reliable field character for separating Pterygoplichthys from large Hypostomus species. Ground colour is a complex dark olive-brown to black, patterned with a network of irregularly sized pale spots or blotches that form a roughly reticulate or 'worm-track' pattern on the body and fins. The ventral surface is paler.

Sexual dimorphism is subtle and difficult to assess except in mature fish. Males develop a small, thick, protruding genital papilla; females have a less prominent papilla that lies closer to or flush with the body surface. Body shape differences between the sexes are not consistently diagnostic in this species.

Habitat

Pterygoplichthys ambrosettii is native to the Paraguay, middle Paraná, Bermejo, and Uruguay river systems of Argentina, Paraguay, and adjacent parts of Brazil and Bolivia — collectively the La Plata drainage system, the second largest river system in South America. The type locality is the Río Paraguay at the town of Formosa, Argentina.

The Paraná–Paraguay system is a floodplain river complex characterised by slow to moderate current, turbid water, and extensive lateral floodplains that expand dramatically during the wet season (austral summer). Water temperatures across the species range span a wide seasonal gradient — from around 64 °F in cooler austral winter months to over 82 °F in summer. FishBase gives a temperature range of 70–75 °F for husbandry purposes, but wild fish experience both cooler and warmer extremes. pH spans 6.5–8.2; the Paraná mainstream can be mildly alkaline.

Microhabitat in the wild involves soft-bottomed river margins, flooded grassland and gallery forest margins, and turbid main-channel banks. The species is a confirmed tunnel-builder for nesting: males excavate burrows in soft earthen banks above or at the waterline, and these can be extensive structures penetrating a metre or more into riverbanks. This burrowing habit is a defining feature of the ecology and has significant implications for bank stability in river systems where the species has been introduced.

Feeding

Pterygoplichthys ambrosettii is an omnivorous scraper-grazer. The large ventral suckermouth with fine, comb-like teeth is capable of rasping algae from rock and wood surfaces, grazing periphyton from submerged vegetation, and ingesting detritus and organic sediment from the substrate. FishBase describes the species as omnivorous and notes it is a good algae eater, particularly when young.

In the wild, gut-content studies of related Pterygoplichthys species show a diet dominated by algae, periphyton, detritus, and plant material, with minor animal matter. As juveniles and sub-adults, the algae-scraping role can be useful in an aquarium, but large adults consume too little algae relative to the waste they produce to be a useful clean-up crew in most setups.

In captivity, the standard Pterygoplichthys diet consists of sinking algae wafers and spirulina-based pellets as the core, supplemented with blanched vegetables (courgette, cucumber, sweet potato) and occasional small protein items. The species is not a xylophage and does not require driftwood for nutrition, though wood in the tank provides enrichment. Large adults have significant bioload and will compete with smaller tankmates for sinking food.

Mating

In the wild, Pterygoplichthys ambrosettii adopts a uniquely terrestrial nesting strategy among plecos: males excavate burrow tunnels in soft riverbank substrate, often in colonies where multiple males dig adjacent tunnels in the same bank. The burrows typically angle into the bank above the waterline or just at it, with the egg chamber positioned inside where humidity is high but the risk of flooding is managed. This behaviour has been documented in the Paraná basin and is shared by related species including Pterygoplichthys pardalis and P. disjunctivus.

Courtship leading to burrow spawning in the wild is not well described in the literature, but the male's occupation of a completed burrow and the subsequent attendance of a female leading to spawning within the tunnel constitutes the mating event. Males may defend burrow entrances against rival males. In the aquarium, natural burrowing behaviour is suppressed by the hard substrate typical of most tanks; breeding has not been reported in captivity for this species.

Breeding

PlanetCatfish records breeding as unreported in captivity for Pterygoplichthys ambrosettii. In nature, the male occupies a burrow tunnel and guards the egg mass, which consists of thousands of bright orange adhesive eggs deposited inside the chamber. The large, highly coloured egg mass is characteristic of Pterygoplichthys reproduction and distinguishes the genus from the smaller clutches of cave-spawning Ancistrus and Peckoltia.

The male fans and guards the eggs through incubation, which in the wild corresponds to the warmer wet-season months. Larval development takes place within the burrow, with fry emerging once yolk sac absorption is complete. The nesting biology of the closely related P. pardalis has been studied in the wild (Brazil) and indicates that clutch sizes can reach several thousand eggs and that male parental investment is substantial.

Replication of the natural spawning trigger — warm water, soft substrate for burrowing, high nutritional condition, and possibly lowered atmospheric pressure or rising water level — would be required for captive reproduction, and no keeper has yet succeeded in engineering these conditions.

In the aquarium

Pterygoplichthys ambrosettii is a fish that belongs in a very large aquarium or — better still — a pond system. At 50+ cm total length, a single adult requires a minimum footprint of roughly 200 × 23.5 in of floor space, translating to a tank volume of at least 105–160 US gal for a single specimen kept with appropriate space for normal movement. Any aquarium smaller than this should be regarded as a short-term or juvenile holding arrangement rather than a permanent home.

Water parameters should reflect the Paraná origin: temperature 68–81 °F (the species tolerates a wide range, with 72–77 °F recommended as a midpoint), pH 6.5–7.8, moderate hardness. It is a hardier fish than many Amazonian species and can adapt to moderately hard tap water. Robust, powerful filtration is essential — an animal this size produces substantial ammonia and mechanical waste. A high-flow sump or canister filter rated far above the tank volume is advisable.

The species is generally peaceful toward fish too large to be eaten, and will ignore most community fish of reasonable size. However, its size and activity mean it will rearrange decor, uproot plants, and potentially damage the silicone seams of inadequate tanks through the mechanical force of its movement. Plants, unless robustly rooted and large-leaved, rarely survive alongside a large individual. Suitable tank furnishings are large smooth stones, robust bogwood, and a sandy or coarse-gravel substrate.

As a responsible note: Pterygoplichthys species have become highly invasive in warm freshwater systems worldwide — Florida, Texas, Mexico, Southeast Asia — through deliberate and accidental release. Releasing any specimen into natural waterways is environmentally destructive. Owners who can no longer care for a specimen should contact aquarium societies or local fish keepers for rehoming.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Pterygoplichthys ambrosettii as Least Concern in 2020, reflecting its wide distribution across the Paraná–Paraguay system and the absence of population-level threats in its native range. The La Plata basin is heavily engineered — the Itaipú and Yacyretá dams on the Paraná mainstem have fundamentally altered the hydrology of large parts of the range — but the species appears resilient to hydrological modification and remains common in the middle and lower Paraná and Paraguay systems.

Somewhat paradoxically, the primary conservation concern for this species is now the reverse of decline: its introduction and explosive proliferation in non-native systems. Feral populations are established in Florida (USA), Texas (USA), various Mexican rivers, and multiple Asian river systems. In these environments, Pterygoplichthys species outcompete native benthic fish, destroy riverbanks through burrowing, displace nesting waterbirds by occupying bank burrows, and alter primary productivity. Control of established feral populations has proven extremely difficult.

The ornamental trade created these invasive populations, and responsible stewardship by aquarists — ensuring that specimens are never released — remains the most actionable conservation contribution for owners of this species.
