Taxonomy & naming
Pterygoplichthys undecimalis was described by Franz Steindachner in 1878 in the Anzeiger der Kaiserlichen Akademie der Wissenschaften, Wien (Mathematisch-Naturwissenschaftliche Classe, vol. 15, no. 12, pp. 90), from material collected in the Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta — a large coastal lagoon in the Magdalena basin of Colombia, approximately 25 mi east of Barranquilla. Steindachner placed it originally in Chaetostomus (as Chaetostomus undecimalis); it also appeared under Ancistrus undecimalis before Eigenmann and Eigenmann (1889) moved it to the combination Pterygoplichthys undecimalis. Weber (1992) provided a complementary description.
The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) accepts Pterygoplichthys undecimalis (Steindachner, 1878) as the valid name. Within Pterygoplichthys, the species belongs to subfamily Hypostominae and is distinguished from congeners by morphological features including a dorsal fin ray count typically involving eleven or more rays — the character most closely read into the species epithet — and by its restricted geographic range, which sets it apart from the widely invasive P. pardalis and P. multiradiatus.
Morphology
Pterygoplichthys undecimalis reaches up to 19.5 in standard length (SL), making it the largest species in the genus and one of the largest loricariids encountered in the ornamental trade. The entire body is sheathed in the keeled, interlocking bony scutes typical of Pterygoplichthys; the ventral surface is largely unarmoured as in all members of the family.
The genus Pterygoplichthys is readily identified among plecos by the elongated dorsal fin, which carries ten or more dorsal fin rays — most other pleco genera have eight or fewer. In P. undecimalis the fin is proportionally tall and sail-like, highly visible when the fish is active or displaying. Body colouration follows the dark-reticulated or vermiculated pattern common to the genus, though precise patterning can vary with age and condition.
Sexual dimorphism is expressed primarily through the genital papilla: in mature males the papilla is thick, small, and clearly protruding, while in females it is recessed or flat. Males also tend to be somewhat slimmer in body profile than ripe females. Beyond the papilla, external sexing is difficult except in breeding condition.
Habitat
The native range of Pterygoplichthys undecimalis is centred on the Caribbean-draining river systems of northern South America: the Río Magdalena and its Cauca tributary, smaller Colombian Caribbean rivers including the lower Sinú, and the Catatumbo drainage that flows into Lake Maracaibo (shared between Colombia and Venezuela). The type locality — Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta in the lower Magdalena — represents a coastal lagoonal environment where river and marine-influenced water mix seasonally.
FishBase ecology notes record the species in both rivers with strong current and backwater areas, suggesting considerable microhabitat flexibility. As a demersal, facultative air-breathing loricariid it forages along the riverbed and can tolerate periodic reductions in dissolved oxygen. Diet in the wild centres on detritus and periphyton scraped from submerged trunks and aquatic macrophytes, consistent with a trophic level of approximately 2.0 (primary consumer). No specific field water chemistry data were available in the sources reviewed.
In 2006 the species was documented for the first time in the Río Patía, a Pacific-draining basin entirely outside its natural range. This record represents anthropogenic transplantation — the species is not naturally capable of crossing the Andes — and marks a range expansion with unknown ecological consequences for the native fish communities of that drainage.
Feeding
In the wild, Pterygoplichthys undecimalis is primarily a detritivore and periphyton scraper. It grazes biofilm, algae, and decomposing organic matter from submerged wood, rocks, and aquatic plant stems, with a trophic level near 2.0 indicating a diet dominated by plant and microbial material rather than animal prey.
Juveniles are reported to be effective algae grazers; adults shift increasingly toward detritus and coarser plant material as their size increases. In the aquarium, a regimen based on high-quality sinking wafers (spirulina or algae-based), blanched vegetables (courgette, sweet potato, cucumber, peas), and driftwood for rasping and behavioural enrichment reflects the natural diet well. Protein supplements — frozen or live invertebrate foods — are appropriate as an occasional component. Given the species' very low population resilience (FishBase estimate: minimum doubling time greater than 14 years) and moderate fishing vulnerability score (44 of 100), maintaining adults in good health through appropriate nutrition has some conservation relevance for captive populations.
Mating
Specific courtship behaviour for Pterygoplichthys undecimalis has not been described in detail in accessible aquarium literature. The reproductive biology of this species in the wild, however, involves a nest-guarding male — a pattern consistent with other Pterygoplichthys — and is notable for the type of nest constructed.
Males in the wild excavate burrows or tunnels in soft riverbanks, creating protected chambers where eggs are subsequently deposited. This tunnel-digging behaviour is a significant energetic investment and implies that males hold and defend a fixed territory during the reproductive season. The conspicuous size difference between a ripe female (broader-bodied, recessed papilla) and the guarding male (slimmer, protruding papilla) provides the external cues that would frame courtship and mate selection, though detailed observations under natural conditions have not been published in sources available for this review.
Breeding
Pterygoplichthys undecimalis is not reported as having been bred in captivity in the sources reviewed, a common situation for very large plecos that are challenging to condition and house at scales that permit natural spawning behaviour. In nature, males occupy tunnels excavated in soft riverbanks and guard masses of bright orange eggs — a clutch size running to thousands of eggs per nest, consistent with what has been recorded for congeners such as P. pardalis under similar conditions.
The eggs are adhesive and deposited on the tunnel walls or floor; the male fans them to maintain oxygen supply and presumably removes infertile or fungused eggs, as is typical for paternal-guarding loricariids. Incubation and larval development times under natural river conditions in the Magdalena are not documented in accessible literature. The reproductive output implied by multi-thousand egg clutches, combined with a very low estimated population resilience, suggests that while individual reproductive events may be large, successful recruitment is infrequent or highly density-dependent.
In the aquarium
At up to 19.5 in SL Pterygoplichthys undecimalis is a fish for dedicated specialists, not community tanks. An adult requires an aquarium of at minimum 118 in length with a very large volume — several thousand litres would be necessary to maintain long-term wellbeing — along with extremely robust mechanical and biological filtration, since large Pterygoplichthys are high-waste producers.
The tank should include substantial flat rocks, large root tangles, and sections of smooth pipe or ceramic to provide daytime cover. Open sandy or fine-gravel substrate areas give the fish foraging space and reduce substrate-abrasion injury to the ventral surface. Water temperature in the 75–82 °F range reflects the tropical Caribbean-slope origin of the species; pH and hardness should be maintained in moderate ranges, though exact targets for wild populations of this species are not well characterised.
P. undecimalis is peaceful toward dissimilar tankmates — large robust cichlids, large characids — but territory and resource competition with other large plecos should be avoided. The species is currently uncommonly kept in the hobby, in part because of its adult size and in part because it is infrequently exported compared to the widespread P. pardalis and P. multiradiatus. Hobbyists who do acquire it should source specimens responsibly, be prepared for decades of care given the species' longevity, and avoid releasing any individual into non-native waterways.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Pterygoplichthys undecimalis as Least Concern in October 2014, based on its presence across multiple Caribbean-draining river systems of Colombia and the Maracaibo basin without evidence of large-scale population decline at that time. The species is known locally in Colombia as 'cacucho' and is caught incidentally in commercial and artisanal fisheries.
FishBase records a very low population resilience for this species — minimum population doubling time greater than 14 years — which makes it inherently more vulnerable to sustained harvesting or habitat degradation than most smaller, faster-maturing fishes. The Magdalena basin, which constitutes the core of its range, is one of the most heavily modified river systems in South America: dam construction, agricultural runoff, deforestation, and urban water pollution affect water quality, sediment dynamics, and submerged substrate in ways that could reduce spawning habitat over time.
The anthropogenic transplantation of P. undecimalis into the Río Patía (first recorded 2006) adds a cautionary note: although the species is native to Colombia, its introduction into a separate Pacific-slope drainage represents an ecologically uncontrolled range expansion whose effects on native fish communities remain unstudied.
