Hypostomus hondae is a medium-to-large armoured catfish endemic to the Magdalena River basin of Colombia, described from the town of Honda on the middle Magdalena where falls historically interrupted upriver navigation. It inhabits rocky riffle and run habitats across the Andean foothills reach of the Magdalena and is among the more frequently referenced trans-Andean Hypostomus in systematic literature covering northern South America. The species is rarely seen in the ornamental fish trade outside Colombia.

Taxonomy & naming

Hypostomus hondae was described by Charles Tate Regan in 1912 based on specimens from Honda, Tolima Department, Colombia — a historic river port at the upper limit of navigation on the Magdalena, where cascades prevented passage upstream. Regan's original description placed the fish in Plecostomus, consistent with early-twentieth-century practice for virtually all large armoured catfishes; the genus Hypostomus Lacépède, 1803 was subsequently re-erected and the species transferred. Regan was among the most prolific fish systematists of his era at the Natural History Museum London, and described many Colombian and Venezuelan loricariids during a particularly productive period of South American ichthyological exploration. H. hondae belongs to a diverse radiation of trans-Andean Hypostomus inhabiting the Magdalena, Cauca, and their tributaries — a fauna isolated from Amazonian and Orinoco relatives by the Andes since at least the Miocene. Its precise phylogenetic position within Hypostomus has not been settled by modern molecular analysis, but morphological features place it within a broadly defined Hypostominae assemblage adapted to moderate-gradient, rocky-bottomed rivers. The species has been cited in Colombian ichthyofaunal inventories as one of several endemic Hypostomus confined to the Magdalena basin.

Morphology

H. hondae shares the general body plan of the genus: a flattened, heavily armoured head and trunk grading into a laterally compressed caudal peduncle, with the body surface entirely covered in longitudinal rows of odontode-bearing dermal plates except for the naked or lightly plated abdomen. The dorsal fin originates well forward on the body and has one unbranched and seven branched rays; when fully erected the fin presents the characteristic fan-like profile of the genus. The oral disc is broad, fleshy, and well-papillated, suited for rasping periphyton from mineral substrates. Colouration is typically brownish, tan, or grey dorsally with a pattern of darker spots or blotches; the intensity of markings varies between individuals and may fade somewhat with age or in poor conditions. Published measurements place adult standard lengths in the range of 8–12 in, with total length somewhat greater. The species is not among the giant Hypostomus that approach 19.5 in, but it is a robust, solid fish. Males in breeding condition may develop more pronounced interopercular odontode clusters and stouter pectoral-fin spines than females, but detailed sexual dimorphism data for H. hondae specifically are not available.

Habitat

The Magdalena River basin drains the great intermontane valley between Colombia's Central and Eastern Andes, covering roughly 270,0 mi² and emptying into the Caribbean Sea. H. hondae is recorded from the middle reaches of the Magdalena and some of its larger tributaries in Tolima, Cundinamarca, and neighbouring departments, at elevations generally between 150 and 1969 ft above sea level. At these elevations the Magdalena transitions from a turbulent Andean headwater torrent to a broader, slower river, but maintains many gravel, cobble, and bedrock riffles where current remains brisk. These riffle zones are the core habitat of the species — surfaces that are continuously colonised by epilithic algae, diatoms, and periphyton biofilm. Water temperature in the middle Magdalena ranges approximately 73–84 °F (73–84 °F) through the year, with only modest seasonal variation at these latitudes; pH is near-neutral to slightly alkaline (7.0–7.8) reflecting calcareous substrates in parts of the basin. The Magdalena is subject to large seasonal flood pulses tied to Andean rainfall, and H. hondae must be adapted to the range of conditions these produce, including periods of elevated turbidity.

Feeding

H. hondae is a grazer of epilithic algae and periphyton, employing the bicuspid teeth and sucker-like oral disc shared across the Hypostomus genus. By scraping rock surfaces, the fish ingests a mixed diet of algae (including filamentous green algae and diatoms), cyanobacterial mats, fungal hyphae, and the associated microinvertebrate community — collectively termed aufwuchs. Detritus is ingested incidentally. Gut content data from related Magdalena-basin Hypostomus are consistent with predominantly algal and detrital material. The species is not a specialist wood-feeder; while some incidental wood fibre is undoubtedly consumed along with substrate biofilm, H. hondae lacks the morphological specialisations (robust jaw musculature, spoon-shaped teeth) of wood-rasping genera such as Panaque. Foraging is largely nocturnal or crepuscular, with the fish resting concealed under ledges or within crevices during the day. In aquaria the species readily accepts high-quality sinking wafers, spirulina tablets, and blanched vegetables.

Mating

Reproductive behaviour in H. hondae has not been described in the primary literature. Based on the well-established biology of other Hypostomus species in comparable Andean foothill environments, seasonal hydrological cues almost certainly trigger spawning activity. In the Magdalena basin the principal wet season runs from April to June and again in October to November, with flood pulses producing rising water levels, declining water temperature relative to ambient air temperature, and changes in turbidity and conductivity. These environmental signals are well-documented spawning triggers in other medium-gradient South American loricariids. It is reasonable to infer that males establish territory around potential nest sites — cavities beneath large boulders, undercut banks, or crevices between cobbles — and court incoming females. Beyond this general inference, specific observations for H. hondae are absent from the published literature, and the section must be rated as data sparse.

Breeding

No captive breeding records for H. hondae are available. The species is not commercially bred and is not a target of the ornamental fish industry in any meaningful volume. The general Hypostomus template, extrapolated from documented species, involves the male guarding a clutch of adhesive, large-yolked eggs deposited in a cavity nest. Incubation at tropical temperatures (75–81 °F) typically spans 5–9 days, and the male fans the eggs with his pectoral and caudal fins to maintain oxygenation. Fry are well-developed at hatching and begin grazing surfaces once the yolk sac is absorbed, usually within a few more days. Clutch sizes vary with female body size; medium-sized Hypostomus may produce 50–200 eggs per spawning event. In principle, captive breeding could be attempted in large tanks with deep cave structures, slightly acidic conditioned water, and simulated seasonal triggers, but no hobbyist has documented success with this species.

In the aquarium

H. hondae is occasionally collected from the Magdalena for local use in Colombia but is not a significant export species. It is essentially absent from the international ornamental trade, and hobbyists outside South America are unlikely to encounter it. For those who do obtain specimens — perhaps through specialist loricariid importers or Colombian domestic suppliers — a minimum tank of 65 US gal would be appropriate for a single adult, with the understanding that larger, heavily decorated tanks make management far easier and reduce aggression. Strong filtration, high oxygen levels, and a moderate to brisk water flow are important to replicate the Magdalena riffle environment. The aquarium should provide multiple stone caves and slate stacks, smooth and rough cobbles for rasping, and possibly some driftwood for structural interest and additional grazing surface. Water parameters: 73–82 °F (73–82 °F), pH 7.0–7.6, moderate hardness. Diet should be heavily plant-based — algae wafers, spirulina, blanched courgette, cucumber, and sweet potato form the core, supplemented occasionally with protein. This species would be a territorial adult and must be given adequate space relative to other bottom-dwelling loricariids.

Conservation

H. hondae has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and is currently Not Evaluated. Its range within the Magdalena basin, however, places it at the centre of one of the most heavily impacted major river systems in South America. The Magdalena-Cauca basin has been subjected to extreme deforestation — estimates suggest that less than 10% of the original Andean forested riparian zones remain — and the resulting erosion has increased sedimentation throughout the basin. Siltation of riffle habitats is particularly damaging for rock-associated Hypostomus that depend on clean, well-oxygenated substrates. In addition, the Magdalena has been impounded for hydroelectric power at multiple points, altering flow regimes and blocking fish movement. Pollution from agriculture (pesticides, fertiliser runoff), mining (particularly gold mining in some tributaries), and urban wastewater is chronic. Given all these pressures, the conservation status of H. hondae warrants formal evaluation, and targeted surveys in the middle Magdalena riffle zones would clarify whether its populations remain healthy or have declined.
