Taxonomy & naming
Rhadinoloricaria papillosa was formally described in 2023 by Crispim-Rodrigues, Bernt, Waltz, Silva, Benine, Oliveira, Covain and Roxo, in the Journal of Fish Biology (first published online 11 May 2023), as a new species from the Rio Negro basin, Brazil. It belongs to the subfamily Loricariinae, the slender, elongate whiptail and twig catfishes of the family Loricariidae.
The genus Rhadinoloricaria comprises a small group of flattened, long-bodied loricariines. Within the genus, R. papillosa is distinguished from its congeners — R. macromystax, R. stewarti and R. listrorhinos — chiefly by its reduced dentition, bearing only 1–2 premaxillary and 4–6 dentary teeth, fewer than in the other species. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for the valid name.
Morphology
Rhadinoloricaria papillosa is a small loricariine: the female holotype/known material reaches about 3 in standard length (SL). The body is strongly flattened in cross-section, the typical build of bottom-dwelling whiptail catfishes that press against the substrate in current.
Several features distinguish the species. The maxillary barbel is unusually long, extending beyond the base of the pectoral fin. The dentition is reduced — only 1–2 teeth in each premaxilla and 4–6 in each dentary. The head is triangular in dorsal view. Most distinctive is the buccal ornamentation: the lower lip carries numerous elongated, smooth papillae set in irregular rows, the character from which the epithet papillosa derives. Sexual dimorphism has not been documented in published sources.
Habitat
The species is known from the Rio Negro basin within the wider Amazon drainage of Brazil. It is a freshwater, demersal (bottom-associated), tropical fish, recorded as occurring at the bottom of the Rio Negro. The Rio Negro is the largest blackwater river in the world — its tea-coloured, acidic, nutrient-poor water is stained by dissolved tannins leached from flooded forest. Beyond this general association with the river bottom, detailed microhabitat and water-chemistry data for R. papillosa have not been published.
Feeding
No detailed diet has been published for Rhadinoloricaria papillosa. Its reduced dentition and the elaborate field of soft papillae on the lower lip suggest a specialised feeding mode rather than the heavy wood-rasping of the Panaque lineage, but the precise diet remains undescribed. As a small bottom-dwelling loricariine, it most plausibly grazes biofilm, fine detritus and associated micro-invertebrates from the substrate, though this is inference rather than documented observation.
Mating
Courtship and mating behaviour have not been documented for this species. No information is published on pairing, territoriality, or breeding triggers.
Breeding
No breeding data have been published for Rhadinoloricaria papillosa. Many loricariines are substrate or crevice spawners with paternal care, in some cases carrying eggs on an enlarged lower lip, but no spawning, clutch, or fry information is on record for this recently described species.
In the aquarium
Rhadinoloricaria papillosa is a recently described species with no established presence in the aquarium hobby, and no husbandry guidance has been published. Any care expectations would be extrapolated from related blackwater loricariines: soft, acidic, warm and well-oxygenated water with gentle current, a fine substrate, and ample cover. These are general inferences only — specific aquarium requirements for this species are unknown.
Conservation
Rhadinoloricaria papillosa has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List (status: Not Evaluated). As a species described only in 2023 and known from the Rio Negro basin, its range, population size, and any threats are not yet formally assessed. The Rio Negro itself remains relatively well preserved compared with whitewater Amazon tributaries, but broad regional pressures — deforestation, mining, and climate-driven hydrological change — affect the wider basin.
