A slender upper-Amazon whiptail catfish named for the Swiss aquarist-ichthyologist Patrick de Rham, Rhadinoloricaria rhami is a poorly known Loricariinae of the western Amazon whose name has shifted across genera even as its biology remains largely unstudied in life.

Taxonomy & naming

This species was described by Isaäc J.H. Isbrücker and Han Nijssen in 1983. It was originally placed in the genus Crossoloricaria, and much older literature — and many aquarium references — still list it as 'Crossoloricaria rhami'. FishBase and the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) now treat the valid combination as Rhadinoloricaria rhami, reflecting a generic reassignment within the whiptail catfishes of subfamily Loricariinae. We follow the Catalog of Fishes as the authority for the valid name and therefore use Rhadinoloricaria rhami here, while noting the original Crossoloricaria placement so the older name can be cross-referenced.

The parenthetical authority — (Isbrücker & Nijssen, 1983) — is itself a record of this history: the parentheses indicate the species is no longer in the genus in which it was first described. Within Loricariinae, Rhadinoloricaria belongs to the long-bodied, slender 'whiptail' radiation, characterised by elongate, depressed bodies and attenuated caudal regions.

The specific epithet rhami honours Dr Patrick Henri de Rham, a Swiss zoologist, ichthyologist and aquarist who collected and studied South American fishes.

Morphology

Rhadinoloricaria rhami reaches a maximum recorded size of about 5 in standard length. The body conforms to the whiptail Loricariinae template: elongate, dorsoventrally flattened, and armoured with rows of bony plates, tapering into a long, thin caudal peduncle. The ventral mouth forms the characteristic suckermouth disc used both for adhesion in current and for grazing.

Detailed external diagnostic features distinguishing R. rhami from related whiptails are documented in the taxonomic literature, but living coloration, fine pattern and any sexual differences are not well described in the readily available sources. In many Loricariinae mature males develop odontodes (small dermal spinelets) along the head and pectoral spines during breeding condition, but this has not been specifically confirmed for R. rhami in the material consulted, so it is not asserted here.

Habitat

The species occurs in the upper (western) Amazon River basin in South America. It is a freshwater, demersal, tropical fish — a bottom-associated whiptail of river and stream substrates.

Reported temperature data for the species are around 77–82 °F. Beyond temperature, specific field measurements of pH, hardness and flow for confirmed collection sites were not available in the consulted sources. As a generalisation for whiptails of the region, such fish are typically found over sand, silt or leaf-litter bottoms in flowing water, where their flattened bodies let them hold position close to the substrate; that broad picture is offered as context rather than as measured habitat data for this species.

Feeding

No detailed diet study specific to Rhadinoloricaria rhami was found. Whiptail Loricariinae are generally bottom-grazing omnivores and detritivores, sifting fine organic matter, biofilm, small invertebrates and detritus from soft substrates. A diet of this general type is the reasonable inference for R. rhami, but precise gut-content or feeding data have not been published, and no captive feeding records were located.

Mating

Courtship and pair-formation behaviour for Rhadinoloricaria rhami have not been documented. The species is rare in collections and is not established in the aquarium hobby, so no observations of mating are available. No data has been published, and the honest position is that its reproductive behaviour is unknown.

Breeding

There are no published breeding records for this species. Clutch size, egg characteristics, spawning site, incubation and any parental care all remain undocumented. Many Loricariinae are substrate or lip-brooders with paternal egg care, but extending that to R. rhami would be speculation; nothing reliable about its breeding has been recorded.

In the aquarium

Rhadinoloricaria rhami is, at most, a rare and incidental aquarium fish; no dedicated husbandry guidance has been published, and it is not a routine trade import. The main reference for the species is Burgess's 1989 Atlas of Freshwater and Marine Catfishes, which catalogues it without detailed care notes.

Any attempt at keeping would have to draw on general whiptail-catfish husbandry: mature, well-filtered, well-oxygenated water; gentle to moderate current; a soft substrate of sand for a bottom-dwelling fish; and a temperature consistent with the reported 77–82 °F range. These are inferences from the broader group, not species-specific recommendations, and are presented as context only.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Rhadinoloricaria rhami as Least Concern (LC), with the assessment dated 24 April 2014. A Least Concern listing indicates that, on present evidence, the species is not considered to face an elevated extinction risk — typically because it is reasonably widespread across the upper Amazon basin and there is no documented evidence of significant population decline.

As with many western Amazonian fishes, the LC status partly reflects the species' broad distribution rather than dense monitoring data. Regional pressures on the upper Amazon — deforestation, sedimentation, mining and hydrological alteration — could affect local populations over time, but no specific threats to R. rhami have been documented, and it is not currently regarded as threatened.
