Taxonomy & naming
Rineloricaria setepovos was formally described by Ghazzi in 2008, in Iheringia, Série Zoologia (volume 98, number 1, pages 100–122), as one of nine new species of Rineloricaria from the Uruguay River drainage of southern Brazil. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the name as valid.
The specific epithet setepovos comes from the Portuguese sete povos, meaning 'seven peoples', a reference to the Sete Povos das Missões — the seven Jesuit mission towns of the Rio Grande do Sul province in southern Brazil. The type locality lies within this historical region. The genus Rineloricaria Bleeker, 1862, is placed within the subfamily Loricariinae and comprises the elongate, depressed whiptail loricariids of South American river systems.
Morphology
Adults of R. setepovos reach a maximum recorded standard length of 4 in, placing this species on the smaller end of the Rineloricaria size spectrum. The body is strongly dorsoventrally flattened and streamlined, encased in rows of overlapping keeled bony scutes. The long, attenuated caudal peduncle gives the fish its 'whiptail' silhouette. The dorsal surface bears the mottled or banded pattern typical of upland Uruguay drainage Rineloricaria; the ventral surface is pale and unkeeled.
The species has 8 dorsal soft rays and 6 anal soft rays, as recorded in the original description. As in other Rineloricaria, breeding males develop hypertrophied odontodes (elongated bristle-like spines) on the head and along the pectoral fin spine, which are absent or greatly reduced in females — a clear and practical secondary sexual character.
Habitat
The type locality is a stretch of the rio Piratini at Fazenda Hinz, in the district of Coimbra near the town of Santo Ângelo, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil (28°42'S, 54°25'W). The species is known from the rio Piratini, which drains into the rio Uruguay in the La Plata basin.
The upper Uruguay drainage in Rio Grande do Sul is a subtropical to temperate region. The Piratini runs through the gentle hills of the Missões plateau over sandy and rocky substrates. Specific water chemistry data for the type locality are not on record, but streams in this region are generally clear to slightly turbid, moderately soft to hard depending on local geology, with temperatures that reflect the temperate climate — cooler than Amazonian systems, with a pronounced winter–summer range. Demersal substrate-dwelling behaviour is typical of the genus.
Feeding
Rineloricaria are aufwuchs grazers and detritivores. The ventral oral disc is used to rasp algae, periphyton, fine detritus, and biofilm from hard and sandy substrates. The trophic level recorded for this species is 2.6 (±0.2 se), consistent with a diet dominated by plant material and fine organic matter.
In the aquarium, R. setepovos and its close congeners accept algae wafers, spirulina-based sinking foods, blanched courgette (zucchini), cucumber, and spinach. A diet weighted toward algae and vegetable matter reflects the natural feeding ecology. The fish also grazes on the microbial film that develops on surfaces throughout a mature aquarium.
Mating
As in all Rineloricaria, males develop conspicuous hypertrophied odontodes on the snout and pectoral spines during the breeding season — the most reliable external indicator of sex in the genus. Females lack this development. In aquaria, males establish territory around potential spawning structures, displaying and defending against rival males.
Conditioning adults on a varied diet and simulating natural seasonal cues — slight temperature change, increased water-change frequency, and varying light cycles — helps prepare the fish for spawning. The subtropical–temperate origin of R. setepovos suggests it may tolerate, or even benefit from, a cooler period in winter (dropping toward 64–68 °F) as a seasonal breeding trigger.
Breeding
No captive breeding account specific to R. setepovos has been published. However, the breeding biology of the genus Rineloricaria is well characterised from numerous related species: males take up position inside an open-ended tube or sheltered cavity, draw a conditioned female in, and guard the resulting clutch of adhesive eggs by fanning them with their fins and removing any infertile or fungused eggs.
Fry emerge after several days of incubation, already resembling miniature adults. They begin grazing surfaces independently almost immediately. For aquarists attempting captive breeding, providing 2–3 in diameter PVC or bamboo tubes at various heights in the aquarium, maintaining excellent water quality, and feeding high-quality foods are the standard approach used successfully with congeners.
In the aquarium
R. setepovos is a specialist catfish that does not appear in the mainstream ornamental trade but may be available through South American catfish specialists or hobbyist groups focused on the Loricariinae. Its modest size (under 4.5 in SL) makes it one of the more manageable Rineloricaria for a well-maintained aquarium.
A tank of 27.5–31.5 in length with fine sand substrate is appropriate. The species appreciates smooth stones, a piece or two of driftwood, and open sandy areas for foraging. Water quality should be high; clean, well-oxygenated water with regular partial changes is essential. Given the temperate-to-subtropical origin, temperatures in the range of 64–77 °F are likely well-tolerated, and a cooler overwintering phase may improve long-term health and breeding success compared with permanent tropical conditions.
The species is inoffensive toward other tankmates. Males may show territorial behaviour toward conspecific males, but with adequate shelter and space this is generally manageable.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Rineloricaria setepovos as Least Concern in November 2018. The assessment notes its endemic distribution in the rio Piratini of the upper rio Uruguay basin, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, and identifies no major threats at the time of assessment.
The upper Uruguay drainage in Rio Grande do Sul is subject to ongoing agricultural intensification, soy production, pesticide runoff, and sedimentation. While R. setepovos is not currently considered threatened, its restricted distribution in a single drainage system in a heavily farmed region means local habitat quality deserves monitoring. The IUCN resilience estimate is high (minimum population doubling time under 15 months), which is reassuring from a demographic perspective.
