Taxonomy & naming
Loricariichthys melanocheilus was formally described by Roberto E. Reis and Edson H.L. Pereira in 2000 in the journal Copeia (volume 2000, number 4, pages 1029–1047), in a paper introducing three new species of the genus from southern South America. The type material was drawn from the lower Paraná and Uruguay river basins, Argentina and associated drainages.
The genus Loricariichthys was erected by Bleeker in 1862 and combines the Latin lorica or loricare — meaning a cuirass or corslet of leather — with the Greek ichthys (fish), aptly evoking the heavily armoured body of all loricariids. The specific epithet melanocheilus is a compound of the Greek melas (black) and cheilus (lip), directly naming the dark lip coloration that Reis and Pereira used to distinguish this species from its congeners. In Portuguese-speaking regions the fish is known simply as viola.
The authoritative modern revision of the genus is the doctoral thesis of A.C. Paixão (2012) at the Universidade de São Paulo, which provides the most comprehensive phylogenetic and taxonomic treatment of Loricariichthys to date. Loricariichthys melanocheilus occurs in sympatry with at least four congeners — L. anus, L. edentatus, L. labialis, and L. platymetopon — across parts of its range (Paixão 2012). The species is treated in Ferraris (2003) in the standard checklist for South and Central American freshwater fishes.
Morphology
Published size data for Loricariichthys melanocheilus present a notable discrepancy between sources. FishBase records a maximum length of 17 in SL (Ref. 85835) — a figure likely derived from the comprehensive Paixão (2012) revision, which examined substantially more material than earlier treatments. Ferraris (2003) and the IUCN assessment cite a maximum of 8 in SL, based on earlier checklist data. The larger FishBase figure is used here as the current best estimate, but both values are noted; the true maximum size of this species may fall between or above either figure depending on the population and material examined.
The body follows the standard Loricariichthys plan: strongly depressed and flattened, encased in overlapping keeled bony scutes, and tapering to a whip-like elongated caudal region. The most distinctive external feature giving the species its name is the dark pigmentation of the lips — particularly conspicuous in live or freshly preserved material. The lower lip in breeding males becomes hypertrophied and expanded, a modification associated with the genus's labial egg-brooding system.
General body coloration is a brown to tan base with darker dorsal markings, consistent with a bottom-dwelling, substrate-matching lifestyle. The ventral surface is paler. Detailed colour-pattern descriptions beyond the dark lip are not well documented in the accessible literature for this species specifically.
Habitat
Loricariichthys melanocheilus is distributed across the lower and middle Uruguay River and lower Paraná River, with confirmed records from Argentina (provinces of Corrientes, Entre Ríos, Misiones, and Santa Fé), Brazil (states of Paraná, Rio Grande do Sul, and Santa Catarina), Paraguay, and Uruguay. The extent of occurrence has been calculated at approximately 585,429 mi² (IUCN 2020).
The species inhabits freshwater wetland environments — permanent rivers, streams, and small tributaries — and shows a preference for sandy or muddy substrate. It is very common in the lower and middle Uruguay River and is frequently encountered in the lower Paraná, where it occurs in sympatry with several other Loricariichthys species. The Uruguay and lower Paraná are large, productive subtropical river systems with seasonally variable discharge; the species is thus adapted to a range of conditions across its broad range.
Like other Loricariichthys, L. melanocheilus is capable of facultative air-breathing (FishBase Ref. 126274), an adaptation that may help it survive low-oxygen conditions in warm, shallow, or stagnant water bodies within the floodplain system.
Feeding
Specific feeding data for Loricariichthys melanocheilus have not been documented in the accessible literature. Based on the genus and subfamily biology, the species is presumed to be a demersal grazer and scraper, subsisting on biofilm, periphyton, fine organic detritus, and microbial communities colonising sandy and muddy substrate surfaces. The depressed body, ventrally placed mouth, and flattened ventral surface are consistent with a benthic lifestyle spent in close contact with the substrate.
The abundance of the species across the lower Uruguay and Paraná floodplains — large, productive subtropical rivers — suggests it exploits food resources that are broadly available in these systems, rather than being a highly specialised feeder restricted to unusual microhabitats.
Mating
Loricariichthys melanocheilus shares the genus's highly derived paternal brooding system. The central anatomical innovation is the hypertrophied lower lip of reproductively active males: the lateral lip lobes expand substantially, forming a padded, adhesive membrane to which the fertilised egg mass attaches after spawning. This expanded lip structure functions as a portable incubation platform, with the male carrying and aerating the clutch through the incubation period.
The degree of lip hypertrophy and the mechanism of egg attachment represent a striking departure from the surface-spawning or cave-spawning strategies common elsewhere in Loricariidae, and make Loricariichthys one of the more remarkable examples of derived paternal care in armoured catfishes. Species-specific courtship details for L. melanocheilus are not documented in the accessible literature, but the genus-level pattern of males defending territories and actively brooding the clutch is well established.
Breeding
In Loricariichthys, the male's lower lip serves as the brooding substrate: after spawning, the egg mass adheres to the hypertrophied lip membrane and is carried by the male through the entire incubation period. This labial or lip-brooding strategy provides physical protection and keeps the eggs in well-oxygenated water as the male moves and ventilates. The system is an unusual and specialised form of paternal care within a family already noted for diverse parental strategies.
For L. melanocheilus specifically, no aquarium breeding reports have been located, and no wild breeding data are available in the accessible literature beyond the genus-level account. Incubation duration, clutch size, and fry behaviour after hatching have not been formally documented for this species. The IUCN assessment identifies natural history information — including reproduction — as a research need.
In the aquarium
Loricariichthys melanocheilus does not appear in the PlanetCatfish Cat-eLog or other ornamental hobby databases, and no husbandry accounts have been located. Specific captive water parameters, diet, or breeding reports cannot responsibly be given here.
Based on the species' natural range in the subtropical lower Uruguay and Paraná river system, a reasonable inference is that it would tolerate a wide range of temperatures consistent with subtropical to warm-temperate South American rivers, neutral to slightly alkaline pH, and moderate hardness — but these are inferences from range, not documented husbandry data. At a potential maximum of 17 in SL, a specimen approaching full size would require a very large aquarium and robust filtration.
The labial brooding behaviour of Loricariichthys males would be an extraordinary thing to observe in captivity. Anyone successfully keeping and breeding this species would be producing genuinely novel hobby records.
Conservation
Loricariichthys melanocheilus was assessed as Least Concern (LC) by the IUCN Red List in October 2020, with the assessment published in 2023. The assessors (Salvador, G.N.; reviewer Reis, R.) note that the species is very common in the lower and middle Uruguay River and frequently found in the lower Paraná, with no identified threats and a wide range across four countries (Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay).
No conservation actions are currently in place for this species, and the population trend is unknown. Research needs identified in the IUCN assessment include improved documentation of geographic distribution and natural history. The species is not listed under CITES. The lower Paraná and Uruguay river systems face pressures from agricultural runoff, sedimentation, and infrastructure development, but none of these have been identified as driving population declines in L. melanocheilus at the range-wide scale.
