A whiptail catfish of the Guianas' coastal forest streams, Rineloricaria stewarti inhabits shallow, clear water flowing over sandy and rocky beds beneath dense riparian canopy. Named for zoologist Douglas Stewart by Eigenmann in 1909 and later redescribed by le Bail and colleagues in 2000, it is an unassuming but elegantly adapted species whose males grow elaborate head and interorbital odontodes as a mark of reproductive condition.

Taxonomy & naming

Rineloricaria stewarti was originally described by the American ichthyologist Carl H. Eigenmann in 1909. The species was not always placed in Rineloricaria — it was originally assigned to another genus and was subsequently transferred to its current placement; by the time of Ferraris's 2003 checklist of South and Central American freshwater fishes (in Reis, Kullander & Ferraris, eds., EDIPUCRS, Porto Alegre, pp. 330–350), the combination Rineloricaria stewarti was established as valid. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises it under species number 5403. A significant redescription was published by le Bail, Keith and Planquette in 2000, providing updated morphological characters and distributional data.

The genus Rineloricaria belongs to Loricariinae, the whiptail subfamily of Loricariidae. The name Rineloricaria combines the Greek rhino (snout) with Loricaria, the founding genus of the family, which itself derives from the Latin lorica (armour or cuirass). The genus encompasses numerous species across South America, many of them difficult to distinguish without close examination of plating patterns, snout proportions, and sexual dimorphism characters.

The species epithet stewarti honours Dr Douglas Stewart (1873–1926), an American zoologist who held a bachelor's degree from Yale University (1896) and a doctorate from the University of Pittsburgh (1924). Stewart contributed to early natural history collections from South America, and the eponym follows the standard zoological genitive construction.

Morphology

Rineloricaria stewarti reaches approximately 4 in standard length (SL). The body follows the characteristic Loricariinae plan: broad and flattened through the head and anterior trunk, tapering to a narrow, laterally compressed caudal peduncle. Bony scutes cover the body in lateral rows, providing armour against the rocky stream substrates the species frequents.

The most distinctive sexual dimorphism involves odontode development in adult males. Mature males grow odontodes on each side of the head and develop elongated odontodes toward the back of the interorbital region — a character noted as similar to the expression seen in Rineloricaria cf. platyura. These hypertrophied odontodes, absent or reduced in females, are typical of Loricariinae males and are thought to function in male–male competition for nesting territories as well as possibly in lodging the male within spawning crevices.

General colouration data specific to R. stewarti are not detailed in the available record, but the species presumably shows the brown to greyish-brown tones with lighter ventral surfaces typical of Guianan Rineloricaria in clear-water forest streams.

Habitat

Rineloricaria stewarti inhabits coastal rivers of the Guianas — the geographically distinct set of drainages running northward and northeastward from the Guiana Shield through Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana to the Atlantic coast. These rivers are structurally different from the major South American drainage basins (Amazon, Orinoco) and often support distinct endemic fish assemblages.

Field data recorded for this species include water temperatures of 77–79 °F and pH of 6.1–6.2, indicating slightly acidic, warm water — consistent with soft blackwater or clearwater conditions commonly found in Guianan forest streams. The species is reported from shallow habitats (4–23.5 in depth) with clear to fast-moving water over sandy and rocky substrate, beneath forest cover. This microhabitat is characterised by well-oxygenated, gently acidic water, moderate to swift flow, and the presence of leaf litter, submerged wood, and smooth bedrock — all substrates that support biofilm growth and provide shelter for bottom-dwelling loricariids.

Associated species recorded at collection sites include Corydoras guianensis, Moenkhausia oligolepis, and Phenacogaster cf. megalostictus, suggesting a community of small, stream-adapted fish sharing clear lowland forest streams. Like other Rineloricaria, R. stewarti is capable of facultative aerial respiration, allowing brief tolerance of reduced dissolved oxygen.

Feeding

No direct dietary study of Rineloricaria stewarti has been published. A trophic level of 2.6 is assigned based on congener data, placing it as a low-level consumer consistent with a diet of periphyton, diatoms, fine detritus, and associated micro-invertebrates. The suctorial mouth and scraping dentition of Rineloricaria are adapted for grazing biofilm from hard substrates — rock faces, submerged wood, and coarse gravel.

In aquaria, closely related Rineloricaria species accept algae wafers, spirulina-based preparations, and blanched soft vegetables such as courgette (zucchini) and cucumber. Occasional offerings of small live or frozen invertebrates (bloodworm, daphnia) provide protein variety. The slightly acidic, soft water preferred by this species in the wild is consistent with soft-water biotope diets where mineral nutrients are low and biofilm is the primary food base.

Mating

Mating behaviour in Rineloricaria stewarti has not been formally documented, but the hypertrophied odontodes of adult males — on the sides of the head and along the posterior interorbital region — are the clearest evidence of male competition and mate choice relevant to breeding. In Loricariinae, these odontode arrays serve in lateral grappling contests between males defending nesting sites and may also function as anchors when males press against substrate during spawning.

Male territory quality — specifically the presence of a suitable spawning cavity — is likely the key variable determining reproductive success, as in related whiptails. The soft, acidic conditions at known collection sites suggest that conditioning aquarium pairs with soft, slightly acidic water at 77–79 °F would best approximate natural reproductive triggers.

Breeding

No captive breeding record for Rineloricaria stewarti has been published. Reproductive biology can be inferred from the subfamily pattern: Loricariinae species are characteristically cavity spawners, with the male selecting and guarding a site — a hollow in wood, a PVC tube, a tight crevice between stones — into which the female deposits adhesive eggs. The male then assumes sole responsibility for brood care, fanning the clutch with his pectoral fins to maintain water movement over the eggs and removing any that fail.

The hypertrophied pectoral odontodes of males in many Rineloricaria species may assist in maintaining the male's position within the spawning crevice during incubation, resisting dislodgement by current. Any keeper who successfully breeds this species would benefit the literature substantially; basic parameters to record would include clutch size, incubation period, and fry behaviour on first emergence.

In the aquarium

Rineloricaria stewarti is not established in the aquarium hobby and does not carry an L-number or common name. Wild-caught specimens from the Guianas are only intermittently available in specialist channels. Its adult size of 4 in SL makes it compatible with mid-sized aquaria — an 20–25 US gal tank with sandy substrate, smooth cobbles, sections of driftwood or cork bark for shelter, and moderate flow would meet its basic needs.

Water parameters should reflect the Guianan coastal river profile: temperature 75–81 °F, pH 6.0–6.8, and soft to very soft water. The slightly acidic, low-mineral conditions of its native streams contrast with the harder, more neutral water tolerated by many South American loricariids, so some attention to water chemistry is warranted. Good filtration and regular partial changes with appropriately soft water are important.

The species is peaceable and best kept with similarly sized, non-aggressive community fish. Compatible tankmates could include small Corydoras (notably C. guianensis, which co-occurs in the wild), small tetras such as Moenkhausia species, and similar soft-water fish. A soft, dappled lighting regime and the presence of leaf litter would help approximate the forest-stream microhabitat and likely reduce stress.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Rineloricaria stewarti as Least Concern in January 2021, based on its distribution across coastal rivers of the Guianas — a region that, despite increasing deforestation and agricultural expansion, still retains extensive forested catchments protecting stream water quality. No significant trade pressure has been identified, and the species is not a target of commercial collection.

The Guiana Shield rivers occupied by this species are among the less anthropogenically disturbed drainages on the continent, and many retain the clear-water, low-sediment conditions that support benthic loricariids. However, deforestation for logging, mining, and agriculture in Guianan lowlands can rapidly alter stream hydrology and sediment loads, threatening the clear, shallow forest-stream habitat this species requires. The high population resilience inferred from related Rineloricaria (population doubling time under 15 months) provides some buffer, but would not compensate for severe or sustained habitat loss.
