Taxonomy & naming
Carinotetraodon borneensis was described by Charles Tate Regan in 1903, originally under the broad genus Tetraodon as Tetraodon borneensis. The genus Tetraodon was long used as a catch-all for freshwater puffers across Asia and Africa, but systematic revisions have since split it substantially. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, the authority for valid names) now restricts Tetraodon to the African species. The Asian freshwater dwarf puffers — C. borneensis, C. lorteti, C. travancoricus and their relatives — were transferred to Carinotetraodon, a genus defined by the ridge-like keel on the belly of adult males.
The specific epithet borneensis simply refers to Borneo, the island from which Regan's type material was collected. Within Carinotetraodon, C. borneensis most closely resembles C. lorteti of Sumatra and the Thai-Malay Peninsula, and the two are easily confused; the key distinction lies in markings and in the more restricted Bornean range of borneensis. The genus name Carinotetraodon combines the Latin carina (a keel or ridge) with Tetraodon (from the Greek for four-toothed), referencing both the distinctive belly keel of males and the fused beak-like dentition that defines the family Tetraodontidae.
Morphology
Carinotetraodon borneensis is a small, rounded pufferfish reaching approximately 1.5 in standard length according to FishBase, with some sources citing up to 2–2.5 in total length including the rounded caudal fin. The body is compact and globose, with the scaleless skin and lack of true gill covers typical of tetraodontids. The four fused teeth form a prominent beak divided by a median suture — a structure shared across the family and responsible for the common name "four-toothed puffer."
Sexual dichromatism is marked. Males develop intensified colouration and more strongly contrasting markings than females, and adult males show the characteristic belly keel (carina) that defines the genus — a ridge running along the ventral surface that is raised and inflatable in display. Males also display reddish or orange-tinted eyes, a feature noted for this genus. Females are plainer in overall patterning and lack the ventral keel. The species closely resembles C. lorteti, and distinguishing them reliably requires attention to markings and confirmed provenance.
Habitat
Carinotetraodon borneensis is known from Borneo, with records concentrated in Sarawak, the Malaysian state occupying the northwestern portion of the island. Its natural habitat is the lowland forest streams of Borneo's interior — typically slow-moving or gently flowing freshwater channels shaded by closed canopy, with substrates of leaf litter, submerged wood, and patches of aquatic vegetation. These streams are often tea-coloured from tannins leaching out of decaying organic material, with soft, acidic water.
FishBase gives a temperature range of approximately 74–80 °F and a pH range of 6.0–7.8 for the species, while some hobby sources extend the temperature range slightly to 72–82 °F and pH to as low as 5.0. The freshwater habitat is consistent with the genus — Carinotetraodon species are not brackish fish. The species' association with intact lowland forest streams means it is vulnerable to the extensive forest conversion and drainage alteration that has affected much of Borneo's lowlands.
Feeding
Like all Carinotetraodon, C. borneensis is a molluscivore and micropredator. In the wild it hunts snails, small crustaceans, insect larvae, and worms among the benthic debris and vegetation of its forest stream habitat. The fused beak is a crushing tool evolved specifically for hard-shelled prey: the puffer bites down on snail shells and crustacean exoskeletons, reducing them to extractable soft tissue.
In captivity the diet must reflect this. Live or frozen snails (bladder snails are ideal), bloodworm, brine shrimp, and small crustaceans are accepted. Critically, hard-shelled food is not optional enrichment but a dental necessity — the beak never stops growing, and without regular abrasion from crunching shells, it overgrows to the point of impairing feeding, eventually requiring manual trimming under anaesthesia.
Mating
Carinotetraodon borneensis follows the breeding pattern documented for the genus, in which males display actively to females prior to spawning. The male's ventral keel and dorsal ridge become more pronounced and he intensifies his body colouration, chasing and driving the female toward suitable spawning sites among fine-leaved plants or moss. The male's reddish eyes and stronger contrast serve as honest signals of quality during this courtship.
Spawning is typically triggered by a combination of warm temperature, good nutrition, and the presence of suitable plant cover. Pairs may spawn repeatedly over a period of days. Egg yields per spawn are low — often fewer than ten adhesive eggs — which is typical for the genus. The very small clutch size relative to body size is consistent with a parental-care strategy in which individual egg survival is higher than in non-guarding scatterers.
Breeding
Breeding in Carinotetraodon borneensis follows the genus pattern of substrate and plant spawning with male parental care. The female lays a small number of adhesive eggs among fine-leaved aquatic plants, moss, or similar spawning medium close to the substrate. Once the eggs are deposited, the male takes on exclusive guarding duties, driving away any intruders — including the female — until the eggs hatch.
Specific documentation for C. borneensis in captivity is sparse, and the species is rarely bred in the hobby given how infrequently it appears in the trade. What is known is extrapolated from the closely related C. lorteti and C. travancoricus, both of which exhibit the same male-guarding pattern. Successful attempts require a well-planted tank, a conditioning diet rich in live and frozen invertebrates, and ideally the removal of the female after spawning to prevent male aggression from causing losses. Fry are tiny on hatching and require appropriately sized live food such as infusoria and micro-worms before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp.
In the aquarium
Carinotetraodon borneensis is rare in the aquarium trade, occasionally available as an import from Borneo but easily confused with C. lorteti. It is a nano fish suited to small, densely planted aquaria — a tank of 10–15 US gal can house a single specimen or a carefully managed pair, with soft, acidic to neutral water (pH 5.0–7.5, temperature 73–81 °F) and gentle filtration. The freshwater requirement is non-negotiable; unlike the green spotted puffer or figure-eight puffer, Carinotetraodon are not brackish fish and must not be kept in salted water.
Temperament demands attention. Like most puffers, C. borneensis is intelligent, inquisitive and predatory, with a strong tendency to nip fins. It should not be kept in a general community aquarium. Species-only housing — a single specimen, or a male-female pair with ample cover — is strongly recommended. Males in particular are territorial and will pursue and injure females persistently outside of spawning condition; excess hiding spots and visual breaks are essential.
Beak maintenance is a non-negotiable aspect of care. A diet of hard-shelled prey — bladder snails, small ramshorn snails, small frozen shellfish — must be provided regularly to prevent beak overgrowth. Puffers are also scaleless and lack true gill covers, making them highly sensitive to medication: copper-based treatments are toxic and must never be used, and other medications should be dosed at reduced levels. As heavy waste producers, they require a well-cycled tank with strong biological filtration and frequent water changes. Puffers should never be lifted into the air — they gulp water to inflate as a defence and an air pocket inside the body cavity is dangerous.
Conservation
Carinotetraodon borneensis is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, reflecting the lack of adequate information on its population size, distribution across Borneo, and response to habitat change. Data Deficient does not mean secure — it means the data to make a judgment do not yet exist, and the species' narrow range on a single island undergoing rapid land-use change gives cause for concern.
Borneo has lost a substantial fraction of its lowland forest over the past several decades through logging, conversion to oil palm and pulpwood plantations, and associated drainage modification. The blackwater and clear-water streams that C. borneensis inhabits are closely dependent on intact forest cover for shading, leaf litter input, and water chemistry stability. Sedimentation from deforestation and agricultural runoff alters all of these parameters rapidly and can render previously suitable streams inhospitable. Collection for the aquarium trade is a minor additional pressure — the species is rare in the trade — but any export should be monitored given the lack of population baseline data. Captive breeding, if achievable, would reduce reliance on wild collection.
