Taxonomy & naming
Carinotetraodon irrubesco was originally described as Tetraodon irrubesco by Tan in 1999, from the Brunei region of Borneo. In the decades following that description the old catch-all genus Tetraodon was progressively dismembered: what remains of Tetraodon today is confined to African species. The Asian dwarf puffers — a cluster of small, sexually dichromatic freshwater species from South and Southeast Asia — were separated into Carinotetraodon, defined by the presence of a pronounced keel along the belly (the carinate ventral surface that gives the genus its name) and the male's erectile dorsal ridge displayed during courtship.
The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the valid name as Carinotetraodon irrubesco Tan, 1999. The original Tetraodon combination still appears in older hobbyist literature and some early electronic resources, but the genus reassignment is firmly established. The species is not to be confused with the superficially similar C. lorteti (the red-tailed dwarf puffer of the Mekong system) or C. salivator (Sunda region), both of which were also moved out of Tetraodon.
Morphology
Carinotetraodon irrubesco is among the smallest of the dwarf puffers, reaching approximately 1 in standard length at maturity, with wild individuals occasionally recorded to around 1 in. The body is typical of the family — compact, deep and rounded, tapering sharply toward the caudal peduncle, and covered not in true scales but in small prickles (spines) that are usually invisible in relaxed fish but become apparent when the fish inflates.
The dorsal surface is patterned in dark brown or olive-green with a variable reticulation and spotted overlay; the underside is pale cream to white in females. Adult males develop a vivid red or orange-red suffusion across much of the ventral surface — the 'irrubesco' (Latin: 'becoming red') — which intensifies during breeding condition. Males also carry the carinate belly keel and a small erectile ridge on the dorsal surface that is raised during display. The four fused teeth form a sharp beak — pale to yellowish — visible at rest and never retractable.
Sexual dimorphism is pronounced by the standards of the genus: females are paler-bellied and typically slightly deeper-bodied when gravid; males in good condition are unmistakable from their red ventrum alone.
Habitat
Carinotetraodon irrubesco is native to freshwater rivers and streams of Sundaland, with records from Borneo (including the Brunei region of the type locality) and likely adjacent parts of the Malay Archipelago. This is a lowland Sunda-shelf region that was a single connected landmass during glacially lowered sea levels, explaining the distribution of closely related dwarf puffers across Borneo, Sumatra, and the Malay Peninsula.
The species occupies the slower, vegetated margins of rivers, streams and backwaters — habitats with soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to near-neutral water. FishBase and aquarium field reports give pH values spanning roughly 6.0–7.5, temperatures in the range 75–82 °F, and generally soft to moderately hard conditions consistent with the peat-influenced and forest-draining rivers typical of Sundaland. The bottom is usually silty or sandy with organic debris, and submerged and emergent vegetation is typically present.
Feeding
Carinotetraodon irrubesco is a carnivore and specialist molluscivore in the wild, feeding on small snails and other freshwater molluscs, small crustaceans, and aquatic insect larvae. Like all tetraodontids it uses its four fused, beak-like teeth to crack hard-shelled prey — the structural investment in that beak reflects a diet dominated by items that require it.
In captivity the fish should be offered a diet centred on small live or frozen snails (Ramshorn snails being the classic food), alongside small crustaceans such as daphnia, Artemia and bloodworm. Hard-shelled items are not optional — the beak grows continuously and must be worn down through use; fish maintained on soft food alone eventually develop beak overgrowth that interferes with feeding and may require intervention. A varied diet including occasional hard-shelled items keeps both dentition and condition optimal.
Mating
Mating behaviour in Carinotetraodon irrubesco follows the pattern documented for the dwarf puffers more generally. When a male comes into breeding condition his red belly intensifies and the carinate ventral keel and small dorsal ridge become more pronounced; he displays these features actively to females, approaching with fin-spreading and lateral posturing. Females approaching readiness become noticeably deeper-bellied as eggs develop.
The male courts vigorously and persistently, and in a small or bare aquarium his attention can stress or injure a female; providing dense planting and multiple hiding spots is essential to allow a female to retreat. In a well-planted tank a receptive pair will eventually move together among fine-leaved plants or moss near the bottom, where spawning takes place.
Breeding
Carinotetraodon irrubesco is a substrate and plant spawner in which the male provides parental care. The female deposits small adhesive eggs among fine-leaved aquatic plants or moss close to the substrate; the male then stations himself nearby and guards the eggs against disturbance. The female takes no role in guarding and should ideally be separated after spawning to reduce stress and predation risk on the eggs.
Incubation period at tropical water temperatures is not precisely documented in the literature for this species, but related dwarf puffers typically hatch within a few days. The fry are very small at hatching and require the finest live foods — infusoria or paramecia initially, graduating to newly hatched Artemia nauplii as they grow. The male's guarding behaviour is the defining feature of the reproductive strategy; unlike egg-scattering cyprinids, the eggs are not abandoned after laying.
In the aquarium
Carinotetraodon irrubesco is a strictly freshwater species suited to a well-planted nano aquarium of at least 10–15 US gal for a pair. It is aggressive and predatory toward other fish — fin-nipping is essentially inevitable in a community setting, and the species is best kept alone or in a species-only arrangement with a male and one or two females among dense planting that breaks line of sight. Males are territorial with one another and should not be kept together without significant space and cover.
Water quality must be high: puffers are messy, heavy-waste feeders, and biological filtration should be robust; regular large water changes (30–50% weekly) are necessary. The fish is sensitive to copper and to many standard aquarium medications — copper-based treatments must never be used. The species is also scaleless in the functional sense (the spiny skin does not protect against osmotic damage from salt or copper the way true scales would), which reinforces the need for careful medication selection.
Feeding must include hard-shelled items — small snails in particular — to prevent beak overgrowth. The fish should never be deliberately lifted clear of the water: when stressed or handled puffers inflate by gulping water, but if lifted into air they inflate with air instead, which is difficult to expel and can be life-threatening. The skin and organs of tetraodontids carry tetrodotoxin; while this is not a danger in the aquarium context under normal management, it is worth noting that the fish should not be handled with open cuts, and that any carcass should be disposed of responsibly rather than fed to other animals.
Conservation
Carinotetraodon irrubesco has no formal IUCN Red List assessment on record; FishBase records it as Least Concern based on available information. The species' native lowland rivers and streams of Borneo and Sundaland are subject to well-documented pressures: widespread deforestation, peatland conversion for agriculture, palm oil plantation runoff that significantly alters the chemistry and clarity of draining waterways, and pollution from mining and industry. These forces have restructured freshwater communities across much of the region.
The aquarium trade has historically collected dwarf puffers from Southeast Asian rivers, but captive breeding of Carinotetraodon species is achievable and increasingly practised, which reduces dependence on wild-caught specimens. The precise extent of C. irrubesco's native range remains incompletely mapped, and improving the baseline distributional data would help inform any future conservation status evaluation.
