Pao abei, Abe's puffer, is a medium-sized freshwater tetraodontid from the river systems of mainland Southeast Asia — the Mekong, Chao Phraya and Mae Klong drainages, from Yunnan province in southern China south through Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. Reaching just over ten centimetres in standard length, it is a stocky, territorial molluscivore built around a hard beak capable of crushing snail shells, and it carries the aggressive, solitary temperament that defines the genus. Its description by Roberts in 1998 formalised a species long confused with related Mekong puffers, and its movement through the genera Tetraodon and Monotrete before settling in Pao mirrors the upheaval that reshaped the Asian tetraodontids in the early twenty-first century.

Taxonomy & naming

Pao abei was described by Tyson R. Roberts in 1998. The species was originally placed in the wastebasket genus Tetraodon as Tetraodon abei, a genus then used for a broad sweep of Old World puffers. It later appeared in the literature under the combination Monotrete abei, but Monotrete has since been ruled an unavailable name. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the current valid combination as Pao abei (Roberts, 1998), with the parenthetical authority acknowledging the move out of the original genus.

The genus Pao was established to hold the freshwater river puffers of mainland Asia — the Mekong and related river systems — separating them from the African Tetraodon (which the name now exclusively denotes), the brackish coastal Dichotomyctere, and the dwarf freshwater Carinotetraodon. A mitochondrial-genome study published in 2021 confirmed close genetic affinity between P. abei and P. leiurus, the banded puffer, though the two are maintained as distinct species pending further resolution.

The type locality for P. abei is a specimen collected from near Bangkok on the Chao Phraya system (approximately 100°31′E, 13°44′N), though the species ranges well beyond Thailand into the broader Mekong basin.

Morphology

Pao abei is a robust, rounded-bodied puffer reaching a recorded maximum of 4 in standard length. Like all tetraodontids it lacks true scales, instead presenting a skin covered in small spicules or prickles visible when the fish inflates. The body is blunt anteriorly, tapering to a relatively small caudal peduncle and a rounded tail. The four fused teeth form a prominent parrot-like beak divided by a visible suture — the structure responsible for the genus name Tetraodon ("four teeth") — adapted for crushing hard-shelled prey.

Colouration in life is not exhaustively documented in the primary literature for this species; the closely related P. leiurus and P. suvattii are known for yellow-green to olive dorsal tones with pale or spotted undersides, and hobbyist records suggest P. abei shares broadly similar cryptic patterning suited to a river substrate. The eyes are large and mobile — a characteristic shared across the family, reflecting a largely visual predator.

Sexual dimorphism is not prominently described for this species. In related Pao species, females gravid with eggs can appear noticeably deeper-bodied than males.

Habitat

Pao abei is a freshwater species of large river systems in mainland Southeast Asia, recorded from the Mekong, Chao Phraya and Mae Klong basins, with records extending into Yunnan (China), Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam. The type locality on the Chao Phraya near Bangkok represents the southern reach of its range; FishBase records its pH tolerance as 6–8 and temperatures around 75 °F, and aquarium sources report optimal conditions of approximately 73–81 °F, pH 6.4–7.1 and moderate hardness (3–15°N).

The Mekong and its tributaries support a varied hydraulic regime — fast-flowing rocky runs, slower floodplain channels and seasonally inundated margins. River puffers of this genus are generally associated with the benthic zone of riverine habitats, where they ambush molluscs and small fishes. The soft-to-moderately hard, near-neutral water chemistry of these systems — well-oxygenated and often flowing — contrasts sharply with the brackish or near-marine conditions associated with coastal Asian puffers such as Dichotomyctere nigroviridis.

Feeding

Pao abei is a molluscivore and opportunistic piscivore. The hard beak is the key adaptation: it can crush the shells of snails, small bivalves and crustaceans with ease, and the species will also take small fish when opportunity presents. This diet of hard-shelled invertebrates is typical of the genus and distinguishes Pao from the more omnivorous small Asian puffers.

In captivity, the beak presents both a feeding requirement and a husbandry challenge: the teeth never stop growing and must be worn down by hard food. A diet that includes whole snails (pond snails, ramshorns), small crustaceans, krill and similar hard-shelled items is essential to prevent beak overgrowth. A fish whose diet is limited to soft foods risks beak elongation that must eventually be corrected under anaesthesia — a stressful and avoidable procedure.

Mating

Mating behaviour in Pao abei specifically has not been extensively documented in the primary literature, but evidence from closely related Pao species — most thoroughly P. suvattii and P. baileyi — indicates that courtship is a direct, brief affair in which a male pursues and follows a receptive female. There is no elaborate display or nest-building in advance of spawning.

The high territorial aggression characteristic of the genus means that outside of spawning attempts, individuals of Pao are typically intolerant of conspecifics. Keeping a pair together long-term carries real risk of injury, and even a compatible breeding pair may need to be separated between spawning events. Captive breeding of this species is rare.

Breeding

Aquarium sources confirm that Pao abei is a substrate spawner in which the male guards the clutch after spawning — a pattern consistent with documented behaviour in P. suvattii and other Pao species. Eggs are deposited on a flat surface or over the open bottom, and the male remains at the site, actively tending and defending the clutch until the eggs hatch.

Captive breeding has been achieved but is rarely reported, reflecting the difficulty of maintaining a compatible pair and inducing spawning in a species that is both large and highly aggressive. Conditioning the pair separately on a varied diet of live and frozen molluscs and crustaceans, then introducing them under close observation, is the approach most commonly recommended by the small number of hobbyists who have documented success. Specific incubation times and larval development details for this species remain sparse in the available literature.

In the aquarium

Pao abei is a species-only fish. Its aggression toward conspecifics and its tendency to shred the fins of any tankmate that comes within reach make community keeping impractical; a single specimen in a suitably sized aquarium of 55 US gal or more is the appropriate approach. Even pairs carry risk outside of brief supervised spawning attempts.

The beak demands constant attention to diet. Whole snails — pond snails, ramshorns, small nerites — along with shrimp, crayfish tails and similar hard-shelled foods must form the core of the diet, not occasional supplements. Soft foods alone will cause beak overgrowth within months. Because this species is scaleless and lacks true gill covers, it is acutely sensitive to many medications: copper-based treatments are toxic and must never be used; all other medications should be dosed at reduced rates with close monitoring.

Pao abei should never be lifted into the air. Tetraodontids inflate by gulping water; inflating with air is harmful and potentially fatal. The skin and organs of pufferfish carry tetrodotoxin — a potent neurotoxin — which is relevant both when handling the fish (use a wet net or cup, never bare hands for extended contact) and as a reminder that dead fish must not be fed to other animals or disposed of carelessly. Water quality must be maintained to a high standard: these are heavy, messy eaters and strong biological filtration with frequent large water changes is essential. Temperature should be held at 73–81 °F, pH 6.4–7.1.

Conservation

Pao abei is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, evaluated in 2011. The species is widely distributed across the Mekong basin — one of the world's most biodiverse freshwater systems — and no specific population-level threats have been identified that would place it at risk of range-wide decline.

The broader health of its habitat is less reassuring. The Mekong faces extensive pressure from large dam construction — particularly the cascade of mainstream dams in Yunnan and the planned Lower Mekong dams — which alter water temperature regimes, trap sediment, block fish migrations and disrupt the flood pulse on which riverine fishes depend. Agricultural runoff, wetland conversion and increased commercial fishing intensity across the lower basin compound these pressures. P. abei is also collected for the aquarium trade, though volumes are not large relative to the wild population. Monitoring is warranted as dam development continues.
