Pao fangi is a compact freshwater pufferfish of the Mekong and Chao Phraya river systems, found across Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam, where it inhabits warm lowland rivers and canals. First described from Vi-Thanh on the Xano Canal in Vietnam's Rach-Gia Province, this small durophage — rarely exceeding seven and a half centimetres — belongs to a genus of Asian river puffers reclassified out of the old catch-all Tetraodon in 2013. Named in honour of the Chinese ichthyologist Fang Ping-Wen (1903–1944), it is occasionally available as tank-raised stock and is kept by specialist hobbyists who appreciate the genus's compact size and intense personality, though its aggression demands that it be housed alone or with other puffers of comparable size.

Taxonomy & naming

Pao fangi was first described by Jacques Pellegrin and Pierre Chevey in 1940 as Tetraodon fangi, from a type locality of Vi-Thanh, Xano Canal, Rach-Gia Province, in what is now southern Vietnam. For most of the twentieth century the species was held in the broad genus Tetraodon, which had accumulated Asian and African species indiscriminately. A 2013 revision by Kottelat separated the mainland Asian river puffers into the resurrected genus Pao, placing Tetraodon proper as an African-only genus; the species is now correctly cited as Pao fangi (Pellegrin & Chevey, 1940), with the parenthetical authority reflecting the original generic assignment. The GBIF record confirms the current valid combination.

The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for valid names here. Within the genus Pao, Fang's puffer is most closely allied to the other mid-sized Mekong river puffers such as P. suvattii (the Arrowhead or Mbu puffer of the Mekong) and P. baileyi. The species retains historic FishBase entries under the old combination Tetraodon fangi, which may still appear in older aquarium literature.

Morphology

Like all tetraodontids, Pao fangi has the family's characteristic blunt, rounded body and four fused beak-like teeth — two upper, two lower — formed from fused dental plates that grow continuously throughout the fish's life. The body is scaleless and lacks true bony gill covers; the skin is naked and leathery, equipped with small spinules that become visible when the fish inflates. Inflation is achieved by gulping water to fill the stomach to several times its normal volume, a defence against predators that should never be induced deliberately.

FishBase records a standard length of 2.5–3 in for the species, making it one of the smaller members of the genus. Coloration in this genus typically involves a mottled olive, tan or golden-brown dorsum with paler underparts and variable dark spotting or reticulation; detailed descriptions of live colour patterning in P. fangi specifically are not well documented in the accessible literature, and hobbyist accounts of captive specimens provide the most current observations.

Habitat

Pao fangi is a strictly freshwater species native to the lowland drainages of mainland Southeast Asia. Its confirmed range encompasses the Chao Phraya basin of central Thailand and the broader Mekong River system, including portions of Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam. The type locality — the Xano Canal near Vi-Thanh in Rach-Gia Province — points to a fish comfortable in slow-moving canals and lowland river margins as well as the main-channel environments typical of the Mekong drainage.

The aquarium literature recommends a temperature range of 75–81 °F (76–80 °F) and a pH of 6.8–7.5, consistent with the warm, near-neutral to slightly alkaline lowland rivers of the region. These are characteristically soft to moderately hard, well-oxygenated rivers with seasonal flooding cycles driven by the monsoon. The species is wholly freshwater and does not require or benefit from brackish conditions.

Feeding

Pao fangi is a durophage — a hard-food specialist whose entire jaw structure is built around crushing shells. In the wild it preys on molluscs, small crustaceans and other invertebrates with hard exoskeletons. The continuously growing beak is the defining constraint of puffer husbandry: without regular access to hard-shelled food the teeth overgrow, ultimately preventing the fish from feeding at all. In captivity the staple diet must include live or frozen snails (ramshorns and pond snails are ideal), cockles, mussels and small crustaceans, offered whole so the crushing action that wears the beak is mimicked. FishBase characterises the species as a carnivore with molluscivore tendencies, and hobbyist accounts confirm snails as the core diet item.

Related Pao species and the broader Seriously Fish account for the genus note that live and frozen meaty foods — cockles, mussels, prawns and small shellfish — should form the core of the captive diet, with snails as a regular beak-maintenance food. Soft foods such as bloodworm can be offered as a supplement but should not replace the hard-shelled staples.

Mating

Within the genus Pao, the mating behaviour documented in the best-studied species — notably P. suvattii and P. baileyi — involves substrate spawning in which the male takes a dominant role. Courtship is not elaborate by cichlid standards; the male pursues and courts a receptive female, driving her toward a spawning site on a flat, open substrate. Spawning puffers do not form the pair bonds of cichlids and do not build nests.

Specific mating behaviour in Pao fangi itself has not been extensively documented in the primary literature, but the genus-level pattern is substrate spawning followed by exclusive male guarding of the eggs, a pattern consistent with accounts from the hobbyist community including an Aquarium Co-Op forum breeding project thread for this species. There is no bubble-nest construction and no mouthbrooding anywhere in the family Tetraodontidae.

Breeding

Breeding records for Pao fangi in captivity are limited but exist within the specialist hobbyist community, including tank-raised specimens available through specialist importers such as Aqua Imports. The genus pattern — documented most fully in P. suvattii and P. baileyi — involves the male guarding a clutch of eggs laid on a flat surface or the open substrate, tending them until hatching. Where this pattern has been replicated with P. fangi, the male similarly guards the eggs through development.

Pufferfish are not straightforward breeding projects: the aggression of the species means breeding pairs must be carefully introduced and monitored, and tank-raised availability (rather than wild-caught) is the more common route to obtaining captive-bred stock. The fry require very small live foods in early life. Full documentation of the species' egg incubation period and larval development under captive conditions is not comprehensively published in accessible sources.

In the aquarium

Pao fangi is a specialist fish suited to experienced keepers. Its aggression is the first and most important consideration: like most puffers it is highly territorial and predatory, likely to fin-nip and harass any tankmate, and it is best kept alone or in a species-only setup. The beak is the critical maintenance point. The four fused dental plates grow continuously, and without regular hard-shelled food — live snails, cockles, mussels, small crustaceans offered whole — the teeth overgrow until the fish cannot close its mouth and starves. A varied diet weighted toward hard shellfish items, with live ramshorn or pond snails as a daily or near-daily offering, is the standard management approach. The aquarium should be kept at 75–81 °F and a pH of 6.8–7.5 in freshwater only; brackish conditions are not required or appropriate for this species.

Puffers are scaleless and lack true gill covers, making them unusually sensitive to medication. Copper-based treatments (which include many standard parasite medications) are toxic to all puffers and must never be used. Dose other medications with care and at reduced concentrations. The fish must never be lifted into the air, as they inflate with water as a defence and can suffer if inflated with air instead. Puffers are heavy, messy eaters and produce considerable waste; strong biological filtration and regular, generous water changes are non-negotiable. The skin and internal organs of tetraodontid puffers carry tetrodotoxin — a potent neurotoxin — and the fish should be handled with care and never eaten.

Conservation

Pao fangi has not been formally assessed for the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). The species is distributed across the Chao Phraya and Mekong basins — drainages that span Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam — a relatively broad range that may buffer it against localised threats.

The Mekong and its tributaries face significant and accelerating pressures: a cascade of hydroelectric dams is altering flow regimes, sediment transport and fish migration corridors throughout the basin; lowland wetlands and floodplains continue to be converted to agriculture; and water quality is degraded by agricultural runoff and industrial effluent in many catchments. Pufferfish are not typically targeted by large-scale commercial fisheries, though small-scale collection for the aquarium trade does occur. The availability of tank-raised P. fangi from specialist operations is a positive signal, reducing pressure on wild populations. Formal population surveys and a species-specific IUCN assessment would help clarify whether range-wide trends give cause for concern.
