Taxonomy & naming
Franz Steindachner described this species in 1866 from specimens collected in Cochinchine — the colonial name for the southern part of what is now Vietnam — giving it the specific epithet cochinchinensis to record that origin. The original combination was Tetraodon cochinchinensis, and this name persists widely in aquarium literature and older scientific references.
The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) now places the species in Pao, a genus erected to receive the Mekong-centred river puffers of mainland Asia following the broader taxonomic reassessment that broke up the old, loosely defined Tetraodon. Under this revision, the genus Tetraodon is restricted to the freshwater puffers of Africa; Asian brackish-water species (the green spotted, figure-eight, and topaz puffers) moved to Dichotomyctere; dwarf puffers occupy Carinotetraodon; and the Mekong river puffers, including P. cochinchinensis, are placed in Pao. The valid combination is therefore Pao cochinchinensis (Steindachner, 1866), the parenthetical indicating the transfer out of Steindachner's original genus. The name Pao cambodgiensis is treated as a synonym of this species in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes.
Morphology
Pao cochinchinensis is a moderately sized puffer, with FishBase recording a maximum standard length of roughly 3–4.5 in. The body is the characteristic tetraodontid form — rounded and compact anteriorly, tapering sharply behind, almost scaleless, with no true bony gill covers and no pelvic fins. The skin is thick and may bear small spinules on the belly, which become apparent when the fish inflates.
The defining feeding apparatus is four fused tooth plates forming a parrot-like beak — two upper and two lower — that are capable of crushing snail shells, crab claws and mussel valves with considerable force. These teeth grow continuously and must be worn down by appropriate hard-shelled food. The eyes are large and can move independently, giving the fish a watchful, mobile gaze that is one of its most recognisable traits. Colouration is variable: the dorsal surface is typically brownish-olive to yellowish-brown with darker mottling or spotting, providing camouflage among the leaf litter and substrate of the river bed.
Habitat
The species is native to freshwater systems of mainland Southeast Asia, centred on the Mekong and Chao Phraya river basins. Its type locality is Cochinchine (southern Vietnam); records extend across Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam, and possibly into the upper Malay Peninsula and Sumatra, though the extent of its range in those areas is less certain. It is a freshwater species; any tolerance of brackish conditions is incidental to proximity with estuarine zones in the lowest river reaches and is not a defining feature of the species.
In the wild it inhabits slow-moving rivers, lakes and ponds — calm or gently flowing water over silted or sandy bottoms, often among submerged roots, leaf litter and vegetation where it can lie in ambush. The Seriously Fish data gives preferred water parameters of pH 6.5–7.8 and temperature 75–82 °F; the aqua-fish.net source records a slightly wider range of pH 6.0–7.8 and temperature 74–80 °F. The Mekong basin, its core range, is characterised by seasonally fluctuating water levels with warm, soft-to-moderately hard water and abundant benthic invertebrate fauna.
Feeding
Pao cochinchinensis is a carnivorous durophage — a specialist in hard-prey crushing. Its fused beak and powerful jaw musculature are adapted to crack mollusc shells, crustacean exoskeletons and similar armoured prey, and snails form the cornerstone of its natural diet. In the wild it is a benthic ambush predator, lying still among substrate debris and striking at gastropods, small crustaceans and other invertebrates that come within range.
The mollusc-focused diet is not merely a preference but a functional necessity in captivity: the continuously growing beak must be abraded by hard-shelled food to prevent dangerous overgrowth. A diet relying on soft foods allows the beak to elongate until eating becomes difficult and veterinary trimming is required. Live and frozen snails, crab legs, mussels and small shellfish should form the bulk of the captive diet, supplemented with other meaty invertebrate foods.
Mating
Spawning has been achieved in aquaria, though it is rarely reported for this species in detail. What is known from the genus Pao, and from the broader family, is that these are not pair-bonding fishes outside the spawning event; courtship is likely brief and driven by the male pursuing a gravid female. Within the genus Pao, males of documented species have been observed to take up guarding behaviour after eggs are deposited on a substrate, consistent with the broader pattern seen in other Mekong river puffers.
As with most puffers, mating in the wild is thought to be associated with seasonal cues — rising water temperatures and, potentially, changes in water level that accompany the wet season across the Mekong basin. The specific courtship behaviour of P. cochinchinensis in the wild has not been formally described in the available literature.
Breeding
Breeding has been recorded in captivity for Pao cochinchinensis, though detailed accounts are sparse. In keeping with the behaviour documented for other members of the genus — and consistent with the Seriously Fish account noting that the male exhibits brood care — spawning follows the substrate-spawner pattern in which eggs are deposited on a flat surface and the male takes responsibility for guarding the clutch until hatching. There is no bubble-nest and no mouthbrooding in this family.
Beyond those broad outlines, species-specific data on egg number, incubation period and larval requirements is not well established in the published or hobbyist literature for this species. Successful captive breeding appears to be uncommon, likely because the species' territorial aggression complicates keeping a compatible pair together long enough to condition and spawn. Where breeding has been attempted, a large, well-structured aquarium with clear territory separation and careful introduction of the pair around spawning condition is implied by the general demands of the genus.
In the aquarium
Pao cochinchinensis is a specialist fish demanding focused care. Its territorial, predatory disposition means it is best housed alone or in a species-only setup — it is not a community fish and will attack tankmates, nipping fins and harassing smaller fishes relentlessly. Even with conspecifics, significant space and territory division are needed to prevent injury, and most experienced keepers house a single specimen per tank.
The beak requires constant attention: the keeper must provide hard-shelled live or frozen foods — pond snails, nerite snails, crab legs, mussels, cockles — on a regular basis to prevent overgrowth. A varied diet of shelled invertebrate prey keeps the teeth worn and the fish in full health. Water quality is critical; puffers are messy eaters and produce substantial waste, so strong filtration and frequent partial water changes are non-negotiable. Puffers lack true scales and bony gill covers and are medication-sensitive: copper-based treatments must be avoided entirely, and other medications should be dosed cautiously. The fish must never be lifted clear of the water (it gulps air when inflated and can have difficulty expelling it), and its skin and organs carry tetrodotoxin — it should not be handled carelessly and is toxic if consumed. A temperature of 75–82 °F, pH 6.5–7.8 and thorough oxygenation suit it well; soft to moderately hard, clean water reflecting its river origins is appropriate. The species appreciates a well-decorated tank with hiding places — driftwood, smooth rocks, leaf litter and some planting — that satisfy its instinct to lurk and ambush.
Conservation
Pao cochinchinensis is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, reflecting its broad distribution across the Mekong and Chao Phraya basins and no evidence of range-wide decline sufficient to trigger a threatened category. The Mekong is, however, one of the most heavily impacted large river systems in the world: an expanding cascade of hydroelectric dams on the mainstream and tributaries is disrupting seasonal flood pulses, altering sediment loads and blocking fish movements across the region.
Additional pressures include agricultural pollution and runoff, habitat modification and collection for the ornamental trade. The tetrodotoxin present in puffer skin and organs deters most predators and renders the fish unmarketable for food consumption, but offers no protection from habitat degradation. Monitoring the species' status in the context of ongoing large-scale infrastructure development and watershed modification across Indochina remains important for confirming the Least Concern assessment in future cycles.
