Taxonomy & naming
Potamotrygon adamastor was formally described by Fontenelle and Carvalho in 2017 and is placed in the genus Potamotrygon, family Potamotrygonidae, order Myliobatiformes. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the authority for the name's validity. The Potamotrygonidae are a monophyletic family — all descended from a common marine ancestor that entered South American river systems during a period of marine incursion or dispersal, and have been freshwater residents ever since.
These are elasmobranchs: cartilaginous fish whose skeleton is formed from cartilage rather than bone, placing them in the class Chondrichthyes alongside the sharks, skates, and marine rays — not among the bony fishes (Actinopterygii) that make up nearly every other group in freshwater aquaristics. The genus Potamotrygon is the largest in the family and contains the majority of described river stingray species. Potamotrygon adamastor is a recent addition to that count, described from South America; primary literature beyond the original 2017 description is at present sparse.
The species epithet "adamastor" is a reference to a figure of classical mythology — a Titan or sea-monster defeated by Poseidon, later adopted in Luís de Camões's epic Os Lusíadas as the brooding spirit of the Cape of Storms. Applied to a newly described stingray from South American rivers, the name carries a sense of hidden, formidable presence in little-known waters.
Morphology
Potamotrygon adamastor has the body plan shared by all members of its family: a flattened, roughly disc-shaped pectoral fin-girdle that merges seamlessly into the head and trunk, with the eyes and paired spiracles (small openings used for drawing water in to the gills) positioned on top and the mouth, nostrils, and five pairs of gill slits positioned on the underside. The tail is distinct from the disc and typically bears one or more serrated venomous spines near the base — modified dermal denticles sheathed in venom-producing tissue, shed and replaced periodically. The skin is covered in small tooth-like placoid scales (denticles) rather than the overlapping scales of bony fishes.
Precise size data for this species are sparse in the accessible literature. Males are reliably distinguished from females by the presence of paired claspers — rod-like copulatory organs formed from the inner edges of the pelvic fins — while females in this genus typically grow to a larger disc width at maturity. The precise colouration, disc proportions, and taxonomic characters that distinguish P. adamastor from its closest congeners are described in the original Fontenelle and Carvalho (2017) publication; independent accounts with measurements and photographs are not yet widely available.
Habitat
Potamotrygon adamastor is a South American river stingray and is restricted to fresh water. All Potamotrygonidae are true freshwater fish: unlike their marine relatives they are stenohaline in the freshwater direction and cannot tolerate seawater or significant salinity. The basin of origin for this species is recorded in the 2017 description; specific distributional data in the wider literature are sparse at the time of writing.
By analogy with its family, P. adamastor is a bottom-associated species, living on or just above sandy or silty substrates in lowland river channels, flooded margins, and associated lakes. River stingrays characteristically lie partly buried in fine sediment with only the dorsal eyes and spiracles exposed, using the spiracles to draw oxygenated water across the gills while the mouth remains pressed to the substrate. They detect prey and navigate partly through the ampullae of Lorenzini — electro-sensory pores distributed over the disc that sense the weak bioelectric fields of buried invertebrates and other animals. The water of South American river systems varies considerably: from the turbid, moderately mineralised white-water of the Amazon mainstem to the very soft, acidic black- and clear-water rivers of the Guiana and Brazilian shields. The precise environmental preferences of P. adamastor are not yet documented in the accessible literature.
Feeding
River stingrays are carnivores and benthic hunters. The diet of Potamotrygon species in general consists of bottom-living invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, crustaceans, molluscs, annelid worms — and small fish, all located via the electro-sensory ampullae of Lorenzini and by olfaction. Prey is pinned against the substrate by the disc and worked backward to the crushing tooth-plates of the mouth on the underside.
No published dietary data specific to Potamotrygon adamastor are available. Given the sparse literature, what is written here reflects what is well established for the Potamotrygonidae as a family. In aquarium conditions, Potamotrygon species are typically offered a varied meaty diet — earthworms, fresh or frozen prawns, mussels, whitebait, and similar whole or chunked animal foods — with feeding usually conducted on or close to the substrate where the ray can hunt naturally.
Mating
All Potamotrygonidae reproduce by internal fertilisation, as do all elasmobranchs. A male locates and pursues a female, typically biting the margin of her disc to hold her in position, and inserts one of his paired claspers into the female's cloaca to transfer sperm. The bite marks on the disc margin heal, but they are a reliable sign of recent mating in captive animals. There is no nest, no external egg mass, and no spawning site; fertilisation and all subsequent development take place inside the female.
Sexual dimorphism is straightforward: mature males have prominent paired claspers projecting from the inner pelvic fin margins, while females lack them and typically attain a larger disc width. There is no prolonged pair bond, and mating interactions in aquaria can be vigorous; females that are not receptive may resist and can be harassed, so having a sufficiently large enclosure is important if more than one animal is kept.
Breeding
Potamotrygon adamastor is viviparous — like all Potamotrygonidae, it gives birth to live young rather than laying eggs. After the small egg yolk of each embryo is consumed, the developing pups are sustained inside the uterus by a rich protein- and fat-laden secretion known as uterine milk or histotroph, produced by specialised finger-like projections of the uterine wall. This mode of nourishment, matrotrophic histotrophy, allows the embryos to grow considerably beyond what the yolk alone could support and results in well-developed miniature rays at birth.
A female Potamotrygon carries a small litter — typically a handful of pups, depending on species and individual size — through a gestation that spans several months. Newborn pups are independent and fully formed, with functional venomous spines; there is no parental care after birth. The reproductive biology of P. adamastor specifically is undocumented in the accessible literature, but the pattern described above is uniform across the Potamotrygonidae and applies. This slow reproductive tempo — small litters, months of gestation, probable late sexual maturity — means that populations of river stingrays cannot sustain heavy removal and recover slowly from depletion.
In the aquarium
Potamotrygon adamastor is a recently described and data-sparse species, and captive-husbandry accounts specific to it are not available. The guidance that follows reflects the requirements of the Potamotrygonidae as established for the better-known members of the genus. River stingrays are a serious commitment: they are large, long-lived, sensitive animals that demand infrastructure well beyond that of a typical aquarium.
The single most important parameter is floor area. River stingrays need a wide, low aquarium with a generous footprint — the disc width of the animal should be a small fraction of the tank's shorter dimension — and a deep bed of soft, fine sand to allow natural burying behaviour. Sharp gravel or bare glass abrades the underside and causes chronic injury. Water quality must be near-pristine at all times: these are scaleless fish with a high metabolic rate and are acutely sensitive to ammonia and accumulated nitrate. Powerful mechanical and biological filtration combined with large, frequent water changes are not optional; inadequate water quality is the primary cause of premature death in captive river stingrays. No salt should be added. Many standard fish medications, copper treatments in particular, are harmful; veterinary guidance specific to elasmobranchs is advisable before any chemical treatment.
Tankmates must be carefully chosen: no fin-nippers, no aggressive bottom-dwellers, nothing small enough to be eaten. The venomous spine is a genuine hazard — stingray envenomations are medically serious, intensely painful, and in rare cases dangerous — making these fish entirely unsuitable in households with young children and subject to legal restrictions in several jurisdictions. Where it is available, captive-bred stock is strongly preferred over wild-caught animals for both conservation and welfare reasons.
Conservation
Potamotrygon adamastor is now listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List. The species was described only in 2017 and remains poorly known in the primary literature, but this confirms it as a genuinely threatened species rather than merely an under-surveyed one.
The pressures on South American river stingrays are well documented at the family level, and P. adamastor is exposed to them regardless of which basin it inhabits. River stingrays are collected for the ornamental trade, taken incidentally and deliberately in subsistence and commercial fisheries, and killed out of fear because of the venomous spine — a fear that is not unfounded but that has led to the indiscriminate destruction of animals encountered by fishers. Larger-scale threats include habitat alteration from dam construction, which disrupts sediment dynamics and eliminates the sandy shoal habitats these rays depend on, and mercury contamination from artisanal gold mining, which bioaccumulates through aquatic food webs. Their slow reproductive rate — small litters, long gestation, late maturity — means river stingray populations recover slowly from any depletion. Several Potamotrygon species have been listed by range-state countries under CITES Appendix III, and Brazil applies export controls to wild-caught rays. For a species now confirmed as Endangered, the priority is establishing detailed distributional and population data to guide targeted protection before further habitat loss or trade pressure compounds the risk.
