Potamotrygon brachyura, the short-tailed river stingray, is the largest member of its family and a contender for the title of the world's largest obligate freshwater elasmobranch — a cartilaginous fish, not a bony one, cousin to the sharks and the rays of the sea, that long ago traded the ocean for the rivers of southern South America and has never returned. Adults can exceed 37.5 in disc width and weigh upwards of 200 kg, yet they spend most of their lives half-buried in the sand of the lower Paraná–Paraguay drainage and the Río de la Plata basin, hunting by night and vanishing by day. They are formidable, poorly understood, and almost never kept by hobbyists — the demands in space, filtration, and caution around the venomous sting are well beyond the reach of all but the most dedicated specialist facilities.

Taxonomy & naming

Potamotrygon brachyura was described by Albert Günther in 1880 in his account of the fish fauna of the Río de la Plata, based on material from the river system of southern South America. It is placed in the genus Potamotrygon, family Potamotrygonidae, order Myliobatiformes — the stingrays. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) recognises the authority as (Günther, 1880), with the parentheses indicating the species was originally placed in a different genus before being transferred to Potamotrygon.

The Potamotrygonidae are the South American river stingrays, an entirely freshwater family and the only group of elasmobranchs — cartilaginous fish, the class that also contains the sharks and the marine rays — to have become permanently established in fresh water. Their skeleton is not bone but cartilage; they breathe via spiracles and gill slits, not lungs; and they sense the electrical fields of buried prey through ampullae of Lorenzini. They are not in any way related to the bony fishes that make up the rest of this atlas.

The specific epithet brachyura derives from the Greek brachys (short) and oura (tail), referring to the proportionally shorter tail compared with some related species — though the tail still bears the characteristic serrated venomous spine near its base.

Morphology

Potamotrygon brachyura is the giant of its family. Disc width reaches 37.5 in (male and unsexed individuals) and weights of up to 208 kg have been recorded; some accounts suggest disc diameters approaching 5 ft in the largest individuals. The disc is nearly circular and slightly humped on the dorsal surface — a darker, cryptic pattern provides camouflage against sandy and silty substrates. Underneath, the mouth, nostrils, and five pairs of gill slits face the riverbed, while the eyes and the paired spiracles (openings used to draw water in for respiration while the animal is buried or feeding) are set on the dorsal surface.

The tail is proportionally shorter and more muscular than in many Potamotrygon species, a feature reflected in both the common and scientific names. Near the base of the tail sits one or more serrated venomous spines — modified dermal denticles sheathed in venom-producing integumentary tissue, shed and replaced periodically. The skin is covered in small tooth-like denticles; there are no scales. Males are distinguished by a pair of claspers, rod-like copulatory organs formed from the inner margins of the pelvic fins; females grow considerably larger than males.

Habitat

Potamotrygon brachyura is probably endemic to the Río de la Plata drainage, one of the largest river basins in South America, encompassing more than 3 million km² and draining parts of Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay, Argentina, and Uruguay. It has been recorded in the lower Uruguay River and across the Paraná basin, including the Cuiabá River of Brazil, and in the Río de la Plata estuary itself, where its distribution is shaped by distance from the coast, water depth, temperature, and salinity gradients.

Within the Paraná and Uruguay systems, the species is positively associated with strong flow accumulation, open water, submerged aquatic vegetation, and the lowland ecoregions of the temperate southern cone — a rather different environment from the warm tropical rivers of Amazonia where most Potamotrygon are found. This is a fish of large, free-flowing lowland rivers with sandy and silty substrates; it buries during the day and hunts at night. Water temperatures in its range are cooler and more seasonal than the Amazonian norm, and the Río de la Plata system can be significantly cooler in austral winter. It is demersal across all life stages, found in both river channels and flooded marginal areas.

The species is vulnerable to any engineering that interrupts the free-flowing character of these rivers: dams reduce floodplain connectivity and alter the sediment and thermal regime on which the ray depends.

Feeding

Potamotrygon brachyura is a carnivore and a benthic predator. Like all members of the family it hunts primarily by electroreception — the ampullae of Lorenzini that are scattered across the underside of the disc detect the faint bioelectric fields produced by animals buried in or resting on the substrate. It pins prey with its disc and transfers it to the crushing tooth-plates of the jaw. Diet consists of bottom-dwelling invertebrates and fishes; at this size, a wide range of prey is accessible.

It feeds nocturnally, spending the daylight hours half-buried in sand. This burying behaviour also aids ambush predation: a ray that looks like a patch of sandy riverbed is difficult for prey animals to detect or avoid. The spiracles on the dorsal surface allow it to draw in clean oxygenated water for respiration even while buried, without drawing in mouthfuls of sediment.

Mating

Like all elasmobranchs, Potamotrygon brachyura reproduces by internal fertilisation. A male approaches a receptive female and grips the margin of her disc with his teeth — bite marks on females' disc edges are a sign of recent courtship or mating. He then inserts one of his paired claspers, the rod-like copulatory organs formed from the inner edges of his pelvic fins, and transfers sperm. The whole process takes place in the water column or on the substrate, with no nest and no external eggs.

Sexual dimorphism assists identification: the claspers make mature males unmistakable, and females are the larger sex, an arrangement common in rays and sharks. There is no pair bond; the male's investment ends at mating.

Breeding

Potamotrygon brachyura is viviparous — it gives birth to live young. After internal fertilisation, developing pups exhaust the small egg yolk and are then sustained inside the uterus by histotroph, a protein- and fat-rich secretion (uterine milk) produced by specialised uterine-wall extensions that the embryos actively absorb. This form of matrotrophic histotrophy allows the pups to grow to a substantial fraction of adult size before birth.

Fecundity in this species is reported as relatively high for the family: litters of up to 19 pups have been recorded, making P. brachyura one of the more fecund Potamotrygon. Even so, litter sizes of that magnitude are exceptional, and gestation spans several months. Pups are born fully formed and independent, miniature rays requiring no parental care. Despite comparatively high fecundity, the combination of long gestation, late maturity, and the slow pace of elasmobranchs in general means the species still reproduces slowly compared with most bony fishes, leaving populations vulnerable to sustained fishing pressure.

In the aquarium

Potamotrygon brachyura is essentially never kept by home aquarists and rarely by public aquaria; its adult size alone makes it impractical in almost any realistic tank. A disc width of 37.5 in means the tank floor must be several times that dimension in both length and width — a footprint measured in tens of square metres — and the animal's weight load and water volume requirements scale accordingly. It is included here for completeness and as a baseline for understanding what the ornamental ray trade does not, and should not, involve.

The general requirements of the Potamotrygonidae apply: deep fine sand (the species buries and abrasion to the scaleless disc causes infection), pristine water with ammonia and nitrate kept as close to zero as possible through heavy mechanical and biological filtration plus large, frequent water changes, no salt whatsoever, and strict avoidance of copper-based medications. The venomous spine is a serious injury hazard — a sting from an animal of this size would deliver a traumatic wound and intense envenomation, and appropriate caution during any maintenance is essential. This is emphatically not a fish for any context where inexperienced people, including children, might reach into the tank.

For the public facilities that do maintain this species, water temperature should reflect the seasonal range of the Paraná–Paraguay system, which is cooler than the tropical Amazonian norm; the Biotope Aquarium Project notes 77–82 °F and pH 6.5–7.5 as working parameters. Captive-bred origin is strongly preferred over wild-caught for any individual of this species that does enter captivity.

Conservation

Potamotrygon brachyura is now listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, an update from its earlier Data Deficient rating. The species is described as moderately common in some parts of its range but has historically been poorly surveyed, and its restriction to the Río de la Plata drainage makes it a regional endemic subject to the full range of pressures on that system.

The most pressing structural threat is dam construction. The Paraná–Paraguay system has been heavily modified by hydroelectric and navigation infrastructure; free-flowing large-river habitat with intact floodplain connectivity, which P. brachyura depends on, is progressively reduced. Distribution modelling suggests the species is positively associated with strong flow accumulation — the kind of hydraulic environment that dams disrupt most directly. Additional pressures include incidental capture in commercial fisheries (a ray of this size is frequently caught in nets targeting other species), killing on sight because of fear of the sting, and collection for the ornamental trade, though trade pressure is low given the species is rarely exported and essentially impossible to maintain at the hobbyist level.

Potamotrygon brachyura is listed on CITES Appendix III. Several South American range states have sought CITES controls on Potamotrygonidae exports; Brazil and others regulate or restrict the export of wild-caught rays. The slow reproductive rate of elasmobranchs in general — even P. brachyura, which appears more fecund than most of its relatives — means that any sustained removal from populations accumulates faster than natural replacement can compensate. Better survey data, basin-level population assessments, and protection of free-flowing river habitat remain the priorities now that the species carries a formal Vulnerable listing.
