Potamotrygon amandae, Amanda's river stingray, is a small freshwater stingray described in 2013 from the Paraná–Paraguay basin of southern South America, where it inhabits the sandy margins and floodplains of the lower Paraná and the vast Pantanal wetland system. It is not a bony fish but a cartilaginous one — a true elasmobranch, related to the sharks and the marine rays rather than to anything else in the freshwater aquarium — and for most of its history it was misidentified as Potamotrygon motoro, the widespread ocellate stingray, until a 2013 systematic revision by Loboda and Carvalho separated it as a distinct species. Modestly sized by the standards of its genus, with a grayish-dark brown dorsal surface and occasional bicolored ocelli, it is one of the few freshwater stingrays endemic to the cooler, more seasonal rivers of subtropical South America, and it carries the same venomous tail spine and the same exacting care requirements as every member of its family.

Taxonomy & naming

Potamotrygon amandae was formally described by Loboda and Carvalho in 2013, carved out of specimens previously assigned to the widespread and taxonomically complex Potamotrygon motoro. The revision identified P. amandae as a distinct species on the basis of morphological characters including the proportionally greater spiracular length relative to congeners, and its restricted distribution in the Paraná–Paraguay system. The species is placed in the genus Potamotrygon, family Potamotrygonidae, order Myliobatiformes — the stingrays.

Potamotrygonidae is a family of true elasmobranchs: cartilaginous fish whose skeleton is composed of cartilage rather than bone, phylogenetically kin to the sharks and the marine rays and utterly distinct from the bony fishes (Osteichthyes) that comprise every other group in freshwater aquaristics. River stingrays are thought to have colonised South American freshwaters from a marine ancestor in the Cretaceous or early Palaeogene and have been isolated from the sea ever since. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer / California Academy of Sciences) is the authority for the name Potamotrygon amandae Loboda & Carvalho, 2013.

The species epithet honours Amanda Lucas Gimeno, an undergraduate colleague of first author Loboda at the time of the study — a patronym rather than a descriptive term.

Morphology

Potamotrygon amandae has the characteristic form of its family: a rounded, nearly circular pectoral disc flattened for benthic life, with the eyes and paired spiracles dorsal and the mouth, nostrils, and five pairs of gill slits ventral. The disc is modest in size — females reach approximately 13.5 in in disc width (DW), males somewhat smaller at around 12.5 in DW — making it one of the smaller Potamotrygon species. The ground colour of the dorsal surface is grayish-dark brown, with occasional bicolored ocelli ringed in black; the ventral surface is grayish. Relative to similar Potamotrygon, the spiracular opening (the paired dorsal apertures used to draw in water for respiration while buried) is proportionally larger, a key diagnostic character identified by Loboda and Carvalho.

The tail is moderately long and bears one or more serrated venomous spines near the base — modified dermal denticles sheathed in venom-secreting integumentary tissue, shed and replaced periodically. The rest of the skin is covered in tooth-like placoid denticles rather than scales. Males are distinguished by paired claspers — rod-like copulatory organs derived from the inner margins of the pelvic fins — while females attain the larger maximum disc width and lack claspers. Electro-sensory ampullae of Lorenzini are present over the ventral disc surface, used to detect the electrical fields of buried prey.

Habitat

Potamotrygon amandae is a Paraná–Paraguay basin endemic. Its native range spans the lower Paraná River along the border of São Paulo and Mato Grosso do Sul states in Brazil, the Pantanal wetland of central South America, and the lower Paraná downstream into Santa Fé province in Argentina. The Tietê River, a major right-bank affluent of the Paraná in São Paulo, is also within its documented distribution. Historically the species was confined to the lower basin because the Sete Quedas falls (now submerged by the Itaipu reservoir) formed a dispersal barrier; since Itaipu's formation and the loss of those falls, P. amandae has expanded into the upper Paraná system of south-eastern Brazil, where it is considered invasive.

As a stingray of the Paraná–Paraguay system it inhabits warm, predominantly freshwater lowland environments — fluvial sandy beaches, river margins, floodplain lakes, and the expansive shallow wetlands of the Pantanal — where it lies partly buried in fine sediment with its spiracles and eyes exposed above the surface. The Paraná–Paraguay basin tends toward water that is moderately warm but more seasonally variable than the equatorial Amazon, with temperatures that can dip in austral winter; the water chemistry of the lower Paraná is broadly near-neutral and moderately mineralised compared with the soft, acidic blackwater of the Guiana Shield rivers. No detailed temperature or pH data specific to P. amandae sites were located in available sources; the species tolerates the range typical of lowland Paraná–Paraguay floodplains.

Feeding

Like all Potamotrygon, P. amandae is a benthic carnivore that hunts bottom-living invertebrates and small fishes. Detection of prey relies in part on the ampullae of Lorenzini distributed across the ventral disc surface, which sense the faint bioelectric fields of organisms buried or hidden in the substrate. The ray pins prey beneath its disc and moves it to the crushing tooth-plates of the mouth on the underside.

In an aquarium context the species accepts meaty foods presented on the bottom: earthworms, strips of mussel or prawn, whole krill, silversides, and similar fare. It is a relatively small ray and its food intake is proportionally moderate, but even small stingrays produce considerable metabolic waste, and the gap between a ray's appetite and its sensitivity to its own nitrogenous excretion demands heavy filtration and a disciplined water-change regime. Rays often come to learn individual keepers and may feed from the hand — an interaction that must be managed carefully given the sting.

Mating

River stingrays reproduce by internal fertilisation, and P. amandae shares the mating system of the whole Potamotrygonidae. A male approaches and grips the margin of the female's disc with his mouth — the female's disc often shows bite marks and scars from repeated courtship — and inserts one of his paired claspers into the female's cloaca to transfer sperm. The claspers are rod-like copulatory organs formed from the inner edges of the pelvic fins, homologous to those of sharks and all other elasmobranchs, and entirely unlike anything found in bony fishes.

There is no nest, no spawning migration, and no external egg: fertilisation and the entire period of embryonic development occur inside the female. Males of small species such as P. amandae are physically smaller than females, which may facilitate courtship interactions. As in other elasmobranch groups the mating relationship is transient; there is no pair bond and neither sex provides parental care after the act.

Breeding

Potamotrygon amandae is viviparous, giving birth to fully formed live young after a gestation period of several months — the reproductive mode of the entire family Potamotrygonidae and one of the more remarkable in the vertebrate world. After the small yolk reserve of the embryo is exhausted early in development, the pups are nourished inside the uterus by a protein- and fat-rich secretion called histotroph, or uterine milk, produced by the uterine wall and taken up directly by the developing rays. This matrotrophic histotrophy allows pups to grow substantially before birth and to emerge as independent, fully functional miniature stingrays.

No published litter-size or gestation-length data specific to P. amandae were found in available sources; by analogy with other small Potamotrygon the litter is expected to be modest — typically a handful of pups, occasionally more — and there is no parental care after birth. The reproductive biology of the whole family is characterised by slow output: small litters, long gestation, and late sexual maturity combine to make river stingrays among the most productivity-limited of freshwater fish, with direct implications for how sustainable any harvest level can be.

In the aquarium

Potamotrygon amandae's comparatively modest disc width of around 13.5 in makes it smaller than species such as P. motoro or P. leopoldi, and it occasionally appears in the ornamental trade as a 'manageable' ray — a framing that must be approached with caution. Even at 13.5 in DW the animal requires a tank whose floor area is measured in square metres, with a length and width several times the disc diameter; height matters far less than footprint. A deep bed of soft, fine sand is non-negotiable: stingrays bury daily and sharp gravel or coarse substrate abrades the disc and leads to infection.

Water quality is the most demanding element of stingray husbandry. These are cartilaginous fish with no protective scale layer, thin integument, and a high metabolic rate; they are acutely sensitive to elevated ammonia (which must be kept at zero) and to accumulated nitrate. Heavy mechanical and biological filtration is necessary, and large, frequent partial water changes are essential rather than optional. No salt should be added; this is a true freshwater species. Many common aquarium medications — copper compounds especially — are toxic to elasmobranchs and must not be used. Tankmates must be peaceful, non-nippy bottom fish; any species that bites at fins or disc margins is incompatible.

The venomous tail spine is the most serious welfare and safety consideration. A stingray wound is deeply painful and can be medically serious — in rare cases life-threatening. Potamotrygon amandae is unsuitable in households with young children and is restricted or licensed in a number of jurisdictions. Wild-caught stock adds both a conservation concern and an acclimation challenge; captive-bred animals from specialist breeders are strongly preferred wherever available. CITES Appendix III listing and Brazilian export regulations mean that trade in this species requires documentation and legal compliance from source to buyer.

The species is best suited to experienced elasmobranch keepers who can provide the appropriate infrastructure and the long-term commitment a stingray demands — these animals can live for a decade or more under good conditions.

Conservation

Potamotrygon amandae is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (2023 assessment), a status that reflects its occurrence across a broad section of the Paraná–Paraguay basin rather than any implication that it is abundant or secure at a local level. The species is listed on CITES Appendix III, the voluntary listing tier under which Brazil (and Colombia for several congeners) seeks international cooperation in controlling trade; export requires documentation and this limits but does not eliminate commercial harvest. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service monitors it as a listed species under this CITES obligation.

The pressures facing P. amandae are those common to the whole family. River stingrays reproduce slowly — small litters, long gestation, late maturity — and populations cannot sustain heavy offtake. Threats include collection for the ornamental trade, incidental capture and directed harvest for food and skin, and killing in fear of the sting. Habitat degradation in the Paraná–Paraguay system includes the effects of large dams (Itaipu among them, which indirectly enabled the range expansion of P. amandae into the upper Paraná), pollution, siltation from agriculture, and mercury contamination from gold mining in the broader catchment. The species' documented range expansion into the upper Paraná as an invasive following dam construction adds an ecological complexity not present for most congeners. Population data remain sparse and monitoring is limited, which means the Least Concern assessment depends on range extent rather than confirmed stable population trends.
