Taxonomy & naming
Potamotrygon jabuti was formally described by Marcelo R. de Carvalho in 2016, in a sweeping revision of Potamotrygon published in Zootaxa that named several new species from Amazonian shield rivers. The type locality is the Rio Jamanxim, a tributary of the mid-to-upper Rio Tapajós in the state of Pará, Brazil. The species is placed in the genus Potamotrygon, family Potamotrygonidae, order Myliobatiformes — the stingrays — and is recorded in the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer / California Academy of Sciences) under that combination.
These are elasmobranchs: cartilaginous fish whose skeleton is built of cartilage rather than bone, kin to the sharks and the marine stingrays and wholly distinct from any of the bony fish that make up the rest of this atlas. Potamotrygonidae are among the very few elasmobranch lineages that permanently colonised fresh water; the family is endemic to South America, and its species cannot tolerate salt. P. jabuti has well-developed angular cartilages, hexagonal teeth, and a single-to-double row of tail thorns that distinguish it from close relatives in the Tapajós system.
The species shares the Tapajós with at least one other congener and was, before its formal description, likely marketed in the ornamental trade under incorrect or catch-all names. GBIF lists the valid name as Potamotrygon jabuti Carvalho, 2016, within the class Chondrichthyes.
Morphology
The jabuti stingray has the characteristic form of its family: a broad, nearly circular pectoral disc — flat for life on the riverbed — with the eyes and spiracles (paired respiratory openings) set dorsally on the head and the mouth, nostrils, and five pairs of gill slits on the underside. The disc reaches approximately 19 in across in the largest adults, making this a medium-to-large Potamotrygon; total length including the tail is considerably greater, with the holotype measuring 31 in TL. Disc width at birth is around 4 in.
The most striking feature is the adult colour pattern: a dark brown to greenish-brown dorsal surface decorated with bright yellow or orange spots arranged in a complex, marbled, tortoiseshell-like mosaic — the pattern that inspired both the vernacular name and the species epithet. Juveniles and sub-adults show a simpler pattern of ocelli that gradually elaborates as the animal matures, a pronounced ontogenetic shift documented in Carvalho's original description. The ventral surface is pale. The tail bears a serrated venomous spine near its base, a modified dermal denticle sheathed in venom-producing tissue; it is shed and regrown periodically. The skin is otherwise covered in tiny tooth-like denticles, not scales. Males carry paired claspers — rod-like pelvic-fin copulatory organs absent in females; females grow larger.
Habitat
Potamotrygon jabuti is known from the mid-to-upper segments of the Rio Tapajós basin in Pará, Brazil, with the Rio Jamanxim and Teles Pires River among the documented localities. The Tapajós is a clear-water, shield-draining river — softer and more acidic than the white-water Amazon mainstem — and the jabuti stingray inhabits its margins and tributary streams rather than the main channel in full spate.
Carvalho's original description places the species in smaller streams over rocky, sandy, and leaf-littered substrates, and sources also note occurrence at shallow banks and springs. The water is warm, soft to moderately mineralised, and near-neutral to mildly acidic, as is typical of clear-water rivers draining the Guiana and Brazilian Shields. Like all members of its family, P. jabuti breathes by drawing water through the spiracles on top of the head — a mechanism that lets it respire while buried in substrate, with only its eyes and spiracles exposed. This is a tropical freshwater species with no tolerance for salt.
Feeding
Potamotrygon jabuti is a benthic carnivore, like all members of the family. It detects buried prey using the ampullae of Lorenzini — electro-sensory pores scattered across its underside that sense the faint bioelectric fields of hidden invertebrates — and pins animals against the substrate with its disc before crushing them with the hexagonal tooth-plates of its mouth. The natural diet encompasses aquatic invertebrates: insect larvae, crustaceans, molluscs, and worms, with small fish taken opportunistically.
In captivity the jabuti stingray accepts a meaty diet of earthworms, fresh or frozen prawns, mussel, and whole small fish offered on or near the bottom. It is a vigorous feeder that generates a substantial bioload, and the combination of heavy feeding with extreme sensitivity to its own waste products makes water-quality management the central challenge of keeping any large Potamotrygon. Feeding by hand is best avoided — the sting is a constant hazard — though animals readily learn to associate the keeper's presence with food.
Mating
Like all elasmobranchs, river stingrays reproduce by internal fertilisation. A male approaches a receptive female and grips her disc margin with his mouth — often leaving bite-mark scars that are visible on wild-caught females — before inserting one of his paired claspers to transfer sperm. There is no external spawning, no nest, and no broadcast of eggs: fertilisation takes place entirely within the female's body.
Courtship and mating in Potamotrygon can be vigorous; males are persistent and females may attempt to dislodge them. In large aquaria with appropriate conditions, P. jabuti and close relatives have been bred in captivity, and the behaviour follows the same pattern as marine stingrays. There is no pair bond and no role for the male after insemination; his contribution to the next generation ends at mating.
Breeding
Potamotrygon jabuti is viviparous — it gives birth to live, fully-formed young — and its mode of embryonic nutrition is matrotrophic histotrophy. After the small yolk of the egg is consumed early in development, the pups continue to grow inside the uterus sustained by a rich secretion of protein and fats, a "uterine milk" (histotroph) produced by finger-like projections of the uterine wall, which the embryos absorb directly. This allows pups to reach a viable size before birth.
Litter size is small: the cache data records 1–4 embryos per pregnancy, typically 2, with gestation lasting approximately four months. Neonates are born at around 4 in disc width — miniature, fully independent rays capable of feeding and burying within days of birth. There is no parental care after birth. The slow pace of this reproductive strategy — small litters, a months-long gestation, and late sexual maturity — means that P. jabuti replaces individuals slowly and cannot sustain heavy removal from the wild.
In the aquarium
Potamotrygon jabuti appears in the ornamental trade, where it has been exported — sometimes under incorrect species names to circumvent export restrictions — and its striking tortoiseshell pattern makes it sought after by advanced stingray keepers. It is not a beginner's fish by any measure. Adults with disc widths approaching 19 in require an enormous aquarium whose floor area is the primary dimension: a tank measured in square metres of bottom space, with a length and width several times the disc width, is the realistic minimum. Height is secondary; floor area is everything.
A deep bed of soft, fine sand is mandatory — a stingray that cannot bury fully is permanently stressed, and sharp gravel or bare glass abrades the delicate skin of the disc. Water quality demands are severe: river stingrays are scaleless, produce a heavy waste load, and are acutely sensitive to ammonia and nitrate accumulation. Heavy mechanical and biological filtration combined with frequent, large water changes are non-negotiable. No salt, no copper-based medications, and no aggressive or fin-nipping tankmates are compatible with this species. The venomous tail spine poses a genuine medical hazard — stingray wounds are intensely painful and can require hospital treatment — making this a fish unsuitable in households with children and subject to licensing or prohibition in many jurisdictions. Captive-bred specimens are strongly preferred over wild-caught, both for animal welfare and because they arrive without the disease or parasite burden of wild fish, and their purchase avoids contributing to the documented illegal trade in mislabelled animals.
Conservation
Potamotrygon jabuti is assessed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment published in August 2022. The primary threats recorded are habitat degradation, fishing pressure (for food and the ornamental trade), and collection specifically for aquarium export — with a documented pattern of specimens being shipped under false species labels to circumvent Brazil's export restrictions on listed Potamotrygon. This deliberate mislabelling undermines regulatory controls and makes accurate trade monitoring difficult.
The species' narrow range in the Tapajós basin compounds its vulnerability. As a stingray, it reproduces slowly: small litters of one to four pups, a four-month gestation, and a slow path to sexual maturity mean that populations recover poorly from sustained offtake. The Tapajós system, like its neighbour the Xingu, is subject to increasing pressure from hydroelectric development, gold-mining mercury contamination, and agricultural-run-off driven deforestation. Potamotrygon jabuti is listed on CITES Appendix III (Brazil and other range states) and falls under EU Regulation 2017/160 Annex C, which imposes documentation and trade-monitoring obligations. Brazil has also enacted national-level regulations restricting wild export. Sustainable captive-breeding programmes, rigorous species-level verification in trade, and robust protection of the Tapajós basin are the priorities for this species' survival.
