Taxonomy & naming
Potamotrygon leopoldi was described by Castex and Castello in 1970 and sits in the genus Potamotrygon, family Potamotrygonidae, order Myliobatiformes. It is one of a small cluster of boldly black-and-white spotted rays endemic to the clear and blackwater shield rivers of eastern Amazonia, and it is closely allied to — and historically confused with — Potamotrygon henlei of the neighbouring Tocantins–Araguaia, with which it shares the black ground and pale spotting. The Catalog of Fishes treats the two as distinct valid species.
The epithet honours King Leopold III of Belgium, a keen naturalist associated with the expedition material. In the aquarium trade the species and its many line-bred forms travel under a thicket of names — black diamond, polka-dot, white-blotched, "P13" and a string of breeder designations — but these are colour and pattern selections of a single species, not separate taxa.
Morphology
The black-diamond ray has the rounded, flattened pectoral disc of its family, reaching roughly 15.5 in across in adults, with eyes and spiracles on top and the mouth and gills beneath. What sets it apart is the colour: a deep black to charcoal dorsal surface patterned with rows of clean, rounded white or cream spots, the size, number and arrangement of which vary between individuals and have been intensively selected in captive lines. The underside is pale.
The tail carries one or more serrated, venomous spines near its base, periodically shed and renewed, and the skin is studded with fine denticles. As in all river stingrays the sexes are easily separated: males bear the paired claspers along the inner pelvic-fin margins, while females are clasperless and grow somewhat larger. Hatchling and juvenile rays already show the black-and-white pattern in miniature.
Habitat
Potamotrygon leopoldi is endemic to the Rio Xingu, a large clear-and-blackwater tributary of the lower Amazon draining the Brazilian Shield. This is warm, soft, acidic, low-sediment water running over rock, sand and gravel, very different from the turbid white-water of the Amazon mainstem — and the ray is adapted to it, living over sandy patches between rocks and in the channels of this fast, rapids-strewn river.
Its confinement to a single river system is the central fact of its biology and its conservation. A fish found nowhere else on Earth is, by definition, vulnerable to anything that changes that one river — and the Xingu has been dammed by the giant Belo Monte hydroelectric complex, which has altered the flow regime of the very rapids-and-channel habitat the ray depends on. In the aquarium its origins translate into a need for warm, soft, scrupulously clean water.
Feeding
The Xingu ray is a benthic carnivore. In its home river it hunts bottom-living invertebrates and small fishes — insect larvae, crustaceans and molluscs prominent among them — locating prey partly through the electroreceptive ampullae of Lorenzini on its underside and pinning it against the substrate before working it back to the crushing dental plates.
In captivity it takes a meaty diet of earthworms, prawn, mussel and fish, fed on the bottom; well-settled animals feed readily and can become interactive, though the keeper must always work around the sting. As with all rays it is a substantial, messy feeder whose waste load is a major driver of its exacting water-quality requirements.
Mating
Reproduction is by internal fertilisation, as in all elasmobranchs. The male grasps the female's disc and inserts one clasper to transfer sperm; courtship involves biting at the disc margin and can leave temporary marks. There are no eggs laid and no nest — development is internal from the start.
The black-diamond ray breeds in large aquaria, and a great deal of the stock in the trade is now captive-bred, which is a genuinely positive development for a single-river endemic. As throughout the family, the association ends at mating and there is no parental care; the biology of interest is the live-bearing that follows.
Breeding
Potamotrygon leopoldi is viviparous and matrotrophic: after the egg yolk is exhausted, the developing pups are nourished inside the uterus by a secreted "uterine milk," allowing them to grow large before birth. A female carries a small litter — typically a few pups, occasionally more — through a gestation of several months and gives birth to fully-formed young, perfect miniatures of the adult already showing the black-and-white pattern, that are independent and feeding within days.
Captive breeding of this species is now well established, and selective breeding for spot pattern has produced a range of premium line-bred forms. This is conservationally important: a self-sustaining captive population reduces, though it has not eliminated, the pressure to take rays from a single wild river. The slow reproductive rate — small litters, long gestation, late maturity — means even captive production is measured, and wild populations recover slowly from over-collection.
In the aquarium
The black-diamond ray is a premium, advanced aquarium fish, expensive and demanding, and emphatically not a beginner's animal despite how often it is sold to people unready for it. An adult needs an enormous, wide aquarium — floor area, not height, is what matters — with a deep bed of soft, fine sand it can bury in; rockwork and sharp substrate that could abrade the disc are avoided. Warm, soft, slightly acidic water matching its Xingu origins suits it.
The non-negotiables of ray-keeping apply in full: pristine water, because these scaleless, high-metabolism fish are acutely sensitive to ammonia and nitrate and produce heavy waste; powerful filtration and large, frequent water changes; no salt; great caution with medications; and no fin-nipping or aggressive tankmates. The venomous sting makes them a serious-injury hazard, so they are unsuitable where children can reach them, and many jurisdictions restrict or license the keeping of freshwater rays. Buying captive-bred stock is both easier to acclimate and far better for the wild population.
Conservation
Potamotrygon leopoldi is a single-river endemic, and that alone makes its conservation a real concern: a species confined to the Rio Xingu is exposed to anything that alters that river. The strong, long-standing demand from the aquarium trade has historically driven heavy collection of wild animals, and the construction of the Belo Monte dam complex has transformed the flow of the rapids-and-channel habitat it depends on — a combination of pressures that a slow-breeding fish absorbs poorly.
Brazil prohibits or tightly regulates the export of its wild ornamental rays, and Potamotrygon leopoldi is listed on Appendix III of CITES at Brazil's request, meaning international trade is monitored and requires documentation of legal origin. The IUCN Red List assesses Potamotrygon leopoldi as Vulnerable, reflecting its single-river range, the heavy pressure from commercial and ornamental fisheries, and the transformation of its rapids habitat by the Belo Monte dam. The encouraging development is the maturity of captive breeding: a fish that can be produced in aquaria need not be stripped from the one river it calls home, and responsible keeping means buying captive-bred stock and supporting the protection of the Xingu itself.
