Taxonomy & naming
Apistogramma baenschi was described by Uwe Römer, Ingo Hahn, Erika Römer, David P. Soares and M. Wöhler in 2004, in the German aquarium journal Das Aquarium (issue 422, pages 15-30). The species name honours Hans-Albrecht Baensch (1941-2016), the German aquarist and publisher behind the Mergus aquarium-atlas series and a friend of the senior author; FishBase records the epithet simply as "named after Hans A. Baensch, a famous German publisher." The genus name Apistogramma is usually traced to the Greek apistos ("uncertain" or "doubtful") and gramma ("mark" or "that which is drawn"), a nod to the variable, often incomplete lateral line that runs through the genus — though FishBase pointedly lists the etymology as "uncertain," so even the name carries a shrug.
The type locality is a tributary of the Río Shanushi in the lower Río Huallaga system of northern Peru, near 6°03'S, 77°53'W (the figure carried by both Römer's description and the IUCN assessment). Before the formal description the fish circulated under trade and code names that still surface today: Apistogramma sp. "Inca/Inka," "Inka 50," "highfin nijsseni," "Nijsseni 2," and "red crescent," and it carries the DATZ catalog code A188. The "Inka" label, attached by collectors before any scientific name existed, has long outlived its provisional status and is still the name most fish are sold under. Römer and colleagues placed the species firmly in the Apistogramma-nijsseni-complex, diagnosing it in part on its having only three infraorbital pores, and it shares that complex's signature red-edged caudal fin with Apistogramma nijsseni itself. Apistogramma is one of the most species-rich Neotropical cichlid genera, with roughly 70 to 90-plus valid species and many more undescribed forms; it belongs to the geophagine cichlids, the South American "eartheater" lineage that has radiated rapidly across the continent's rivers.
Morphology
This is a moderately large dwarf cichlid with strong sexual dimorphism. Males reach roughly 2 in standard length, with Seriously Fish citing up to 2 in and hobbyists often reporting total lengths near 3 in (3 in) in well-fed adults; females are markedly smaller, around 1.5 in. The male is the showpiece — a deep, robust body, an oversized head with thick, fleshy lips, and elongated lappet-like extensions on the front rays of the dorsal fin that grow into high, flowing flags in older fish. The tail is rounded and edged with a red distal band bordered in black over a greenish-yellow base, and the body shades bluish violet.
Females are built for camouflage and brood defence rather than display. They are yellowish-grey to bright yellow, the dorsal rays much shorter, and they carry well-defined, relatively broad dark vertical bars on the rear of the body plus a black anal blotch and pelvic markings that intensify when they are guarding fry. Both sexes show the diagnostic set Römer used to separate the species: conspicuous dark spots along the back, five complete vertical bars on the posterior body, a narrow lateral band, and a distinct round spot at the base of the caudal fin. The closest look-alike is Apistogramma nijsseni, with which it shares the red-rimmed tail; the tall dorsal lappets, the dorsal spotting, and the five-bar pattern are the giveaways.
Habitat
Apistogramma baenschi has a small known range in northwestern Peru, in left-bank tributaries of the Río Huallaga — a major affluent of the Río Marañón in the upper Amazon — draining the San Martín and neighbouring Loreto regions. Records cluster in the Shanushi, Mayo and Paranapura drainages, and most trade fish are said to come from the country between Lagunas and Tarapoto. This is upper-basin territory: some collection sites sit at appreciable elevation in shaded forest cooler than the typical Amazonian lowland (the IUCN gives the type locality at about 538 ft), which is why keepers are told the fish does not need bathtub-warm water.
The habitat is classic blackwater — small, shallow, slow-moving forest streams under heavy canopy, with sandy bottoms blanketed in leaf litter and decaying wood. Neither FishBase nor the IUCN assessment records a numeric depth, but the documented biotope is shallow throughout: the fish forages the shaded creek margins of tributaries such as the Río Huytoyacu and Río Shanushi in roughly the top metre of water rather than the open channel, so a working band of about 0–3 ft fits every field account. The water is very soft, low in conductivity, stained tea-brown with tannins, and acidic; Römer recorded pH spanning roughly 4.1 to 6.3 across collection sites, and aquarium references put the comfortable temperature band at about 68-79 deg F (20-26 deg C). Sympatric fishes include killifish (Rivulus), pencilfish (Copella), Corydoras catfishes and Rineloricaria, along with at least one undescribed congener. In short, this is a leaf-litter specialist of the Amazon's tea-coloured headwater creeks, not a fish of the main river channels.
Feeding
Like most of its genus, Apistogramma baenschi is a micro-carnivore that works the bottom. In the wild it feeds on small benthic invertebrates picked from among leaf litter and sand, and FishBase places it at a trophic level near 3.4, squarely in the small-predator range. The feeding mechanic is the genus signature shared with the larger eartheaters: the fish takes mouthfuls of sand and detritus, sieves them through the gill rakers, spits out the grit and keeps the live food. Keepers describe it as an enthusiastic substrate-sifter, constantly turning over the top layer of sand.
One behaviour several hobbyists single out is a taste for snails — Apistogramma baenschi has been observed hunting small snails through planted tanks, which is not reported for many congeners. In the decomposing-leaf microhabitat, the biofilm and tiny crustaceans that bloom on rotting foliage form a continuous food supply, and the same process feeds fry once they are free-swimming. In its native streams the species sits low in the food web, both a predator of micro-invertebrates and, given its size, prey for larger fishes and the occasional kingfisher or wading bird. In the aquarium feeding is straightforward: most fish readily take frozen and even prepared foods, though live or frozen bloodworm, Daphnia and brine shrimp keep condition up.
Mating
Apistogramma baenschi organises its social life around a loose harem. Sexually mature males hold large territories and react aggressively to rival males but tolerate several females, so the natural unit tends toward one dominant male presiding over multiple females, each defending a smaller nesting territory inside his. Females spar for dominance among themselves, sometimes violently, with lip-locking bouts reported by keepers. Even so, by apisto standards this is a fairly even-tempered fish: an experienced breeder at DwarfCichlid.com describes it as not particularly aggressive and notably bold, often out in the open rather than hiding.
That harem structure has practical consequences in the aquarium. A single pair suits a 20-gallon-long footprint, but the apistogramma.com moderators and other experienced keepers warn against crowding more than a pair into that space, because aggression and deaths follow; a proper harem needs a larger tank broken up with caves, plants and sightline barriers so subordinate females can hold their own corners. Courtship is the female's move to make. When she is ready to spawn she intensifies her yellow, blackens her flanks and anal region, and displays to the male to draw him to the cave she has chosen — after which the pair bond lasts only as long as the brood does. Sexual maturity comes at roughly four to six months.
Breeding
Apistogramma baenschi is a cave-spawning substrate breeder, not a mouthbrooder, with female-tended care typical of the genus. Spawning follows the standard apisto script: the female chooses a dark cavity — often a small cave or upturned flowerpot — cleans it, and lays rows of eggs (reported pink to fire-engine red) on the ceiling while the male passes through to fertilise them. Clutches are modest, as in the rest of the nijsseni-complex: breeder accounts put a typical spawn at roughly 60 to 100 eggs (AquaInfo cites around 60, DwarfCichlid.com around 100), the larger figures coming from big, well-conditioned females. The male then returns to patrolling his wider territory, leaving the female as the primary carer to guard and fan the clutch. Eggs hatch in roughly 36-72 hours depending on temperature, the female moves the wrigglers to a pit, and the fry are free-swimming about 5-6 days later — large enough by then to take newly hatched brine shrimp. Keepers consistently describe the females as good, attentive mothers, and report that pairs spawn readily and repeatedly given soft water and decent food.
Water chemistry is the make-or-break trigger. Very soft, acidic water genuinely matters here: keepers who succeed cite pH around 5.5-6.0 with very low hardness, and several note that harder, alkaline water yields eggs that fail to develop or fungus over, while water that runs too warm skews fertile spawns heavily male. This is why the fish, though hardier as tank-bred stock than as wild imports, is unforgiving of a botched set-up — the failure to spawn almost always traces back to water that is too hard, too alkaline, or too warm.
In the aquarium
Water is where this fish is won or lost. The Río Shanushi field data record pH as low as 4.1, and a comfortable aquarium band runs pH 5.0–6.5 at 68–79 °F (68–79 °F); keepers who spawn it consistently work below 5 °dH. Treated tap water with a commercial blackwater extract or peat filtration, or RO water remineralised to low conductivity, rebuilds the tea-stained, tannin-rich biotope. Avoid running warmer than 79 °F — sex ratios skew male in warm water, and this is a fish of shaded montane-foothill creeks, not the sun-baked Amazon floodplain.
Tank: a single pair works in 15 US gal, but a 75–100-litre (20–25-gallon) long tank gives the female room to hold a corner and lets you run a loose harem of one male to two or three females. The substrate must be fine sand — a coarse gravel bottom stresses this dedicated sifter and abrades its delicate mouth parts. Decor should copy the leaf litter: a 2–5-cm carpet of dried Indian almond, oak, or beech leaves over the sand, half-buried bogwood and root, and dense planting (Java fern, Anubias, and floating plants to dim the surface light). Caves are non-negotiable — upturned terracotta half-pots, notched coconut shells, or cave ornaments give the female her dark spawning cavity and give subordinate females a refuge from each other; spread several across the footprint so no one female monopolises the spawning site.
Tankmates: small, fast dither fish — pencilfish (Nannostomus), ember tetras, or similar soft-water tetras — draw the apistos into the open by signalling the tank is safe, and small Corydoras (Corydoras sterbai, Corydoras adolfoi) share the same chemistry as bottom companions. Avoid anything big enough to eat a female, active fin-nippers, and boisterous barbs or danios that outcompete for food; other cave-claiming cichlids of similar aggression, kribs included, fight directly for territory and belong only in a very large tank. The apistos are peaceful toward unrelated fish but defend their own corner vigorously once spawning.
Sexing is easy in adults — males are larger, with tall dorsal lappets, a blue-violet body and the red-edged tail, while females stay smaller, yellow and short-finned — though juveniles at 0.5–1 in are hard to call before the male's dorsal rays begin to lengthen. Condition for spawning on varied live or frozen food (bloodworm, Daphnia, cyclops, baby brine shrimp) plus a few slightly cooler water changes to mimic the onset of the rains; expect clutches of 60–100 eggs, after which the female takes over entirely, colouring brighter yellow-black as she fans the eggs and herds wrigglers, and the male is best given space to retreat.
Common mistakes: weekly 25–30 % water changes are the baseline — this fish will not shrug off the ammonia and nitrate spikes a tougher cichlid ignores — and because apistos react badly to most aquarium medications, especially at the acidic pH they demand, clean water and quarantine of new fish beat treatment every time. Tank-bred stock is hardier than wild imports, but the soft-acidic-water requirement is written into the biology and does not fade with captive generations. The usual error is reading "undemanding" as licence to keep the fish hard, alkaline and overstocked, then wondering why it never spawns. Get the chemistry dialled in and Apistogramma baenschi is genuinely rewarding — a gateway apisto whose challenge is real but proportionate to the payoff.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Apistogramma baenschi as Least Concern (assessors Ortega Torres, Chuctaya & Correa; assessed 24 April 2014, published 2016, and flagged in the current listing as needing updating), and it is not evaluated under CITES. The justification is a population presumed stable with no major threats identified, and a fishing vulnerability rated low. That headline status, however, comes with the caveat its own specialists attach: this is a narrow-range endemic known from a handful of small forest creeks, and the Cichlid Room Companion account argues that any Apistogramma confined entirely to so tiny and fragile an area should arguably be treated as at least vulnerable. Two specific pressures are named — collection for the ornamental trade, since the fish is popular and exporters have taken it in large numbers, and logging in its catchment.
The encouraging counterweight is that Apistogramma baenschi breeds readily in captivity, and tank-raised fish now make up much of what is sold, which takes pressure off wild stocks. Placed in the wider Amazon picture, the species fits the pattern that runs through Neotropical cichlid conservation literature — from Kullander's Cichlidae treatment in the Check List of the Freshwater Fishes of South and Central America (2003) to Lowe-McConnell's work on tropical fish communities: most Amazon cichlids are Least Concern or simply unevaluated, and the real threats are localised — habitat change, deforestation, sedimentation of headwater streams, and ornamental-trade collection, rather than basin-wide collapse. For a blackwater leaf-litter specialist with a pinpoint range in a logging frontier, that distinction matters. The species itself is not in trouble today, but the streams it depends on are small, shaded and easily degraded, and its security rests as much on the canopy over those creeks as on its Red List category.
