Apistogramma nijsseni, the panda dwarf cichlid, is a small substrate-spawning cichlid tied to a single tiny pocket of blackwater forest streams near the lower Río Ucayali in Loreto, northern Peru. It is one of the rare cichlids in which the female is the more striking sex: a brooding female turns brilliant lemon-yellow with bold black blotches, a reversed sexual dichromatism that gives the fish its name. Almost all fish in the trade are now captive-bred, which matters, because wild-caught stock is markedly more combative — and that combative temperament, paired with the female's colour, has kept this dwarf prominent in the aquarium literature for forty years.

Taxonomy & naming

The Swedish ichthyologist Sven O. Kullander described Apistogramma nijsseni in 1979, in a short paper in the Revue Suisse de Zoologie (volume 86, number 4, pages 937–945). The type locality is the Río Copal at Jenaro Herrera, in the Río Ucayali system of the Loreto Region — a small forest creek roughly 9 mi east of the town, draining toward the lower Ucayali. The holotype is held at the Muséum d'histoire naturelle de Genève (MHNG 1595.82), with paratypes split between Geneva, the Swedish Museum of Natural History in Stockholm (NRM), and the Zoölogisch Museum Amsterdam (ZMA). Tellingly, Kullander had only females to work from, which is part of why the species' identity is anchored in the female's coloration. The epithet honours Dr. Han Nijssen (1935–2013) of the Amsterdam museum, a Dutch ichthyologist best known for his work on the catfish genus Corydoras. The genus name pairs the Greek apistos ("uncertain") with gramma ("line" or "graphic mark") — a nod to the variable, often incomplete lateral lines that puzzled early workers across the genus.

Apistogramma is among the most species-rich of all Neotropical cichlid genera, with roughly a hundred valid species and many more undescribed forms in the trade. It belongs to the eartheater subfamily Geophaginae; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes files the family under Cichlinae, but the genus sits within the geophagine radiation in the molecular phylogenies of López-Fernández and others. Apistogramma nijsseni gives its name to the "nijsseni complex," a cluster of short-bodied, large-spotted dwarf cichlids of small blackwater forest streams that also includes Apistogramma panduro, Apistogramma payaminonis, and several recently described relatives. Römer and colleagues (2015, Vertebrate Zoology) re-examined the complex while describing new members, noting that the adult brooding-female black-and-yellow pattern is a shared, diagnostically useful trait across the group. In the hobby the fish carries the DATZ code A180 and the common names panda dwarf cichlid and Nijssen's dwarf cichlid.

Morphology

This is a compact, moderately deep-bodied dwarf cichlid, and its sexes look so unlike each other that newcomers sometimes take a pair for two species. Males are the larger, more elongate sex, washed in steel blue to violet over the flanks and head with a paler belly, an orange margin on the caudal fin, and a triangular dark accent at the tail base that gives the caudal peduncle a "masked" look. That accent is a useful field mark against the similar Apistogramma panduro, whose caudal marking is rounder and whose fins run redder. Females are smaller, and in breeding dress they become the showier of the two: a vivid lemon-yellow body broken by a heavy black blotch on the mid-flank, dark masking through the eye, and black on the pelvic fins — the high-contrast pattern that named the fish.

That female coloration is the species' signature. In most Apistogramma the bright yellow-and-black warning dress is a transient state a female shows only while guarding eggs or fry, but a settled, healthy Apistogramma nijsseni female keeps the pattern even outside active brood care — a reversed dichromatism unusual among dwarf cichlids, and conspicuous enough that Kullander could describe the species from females alone. Reported size deserves honesty. Kullander's measured material gives a small fish of about 1.5 in standard length, the figure FishBase carries as the maximum, while popular care references frequently quote males to 3 in total length. The truth for keepers sits between: males commonly reach roughly 2.5–3 in including the tail, females a touch smaller, and the larger standard-length numbers circulating online appear inflated relative to the original description.

Habitat

Apistogramma nijsseni has one of the most restricted documented ranges of any popular aquarium cichlid. The IUCN assessment treats it as known only from its type locality — the Río Copal forest-stream system near Jenaro Herrera, on the lower Río Ucayali in Loreto, at an elevation of about 427 ft — and FishBase likewise limits it to the Carahuayte/Copal drainage feeding the Ucayali. It is, in effect, a microendemic of a single patch of western-Amazonian blackwater forest, not a fish spread across the basin.

The water is classic Amazonian blackwater: slow-moving, tea- to coffee-coloured creeks stained by humic and tannic acids leached from a deep carpet of decaying leaves and fallen branches. Dissolved minerals are negligible — the streams are extremely soft, with FishBase citing carbonate hardness up to about 5 °dH and often far lower — and the water is markedly acidic, FishBase giving a pH range of roughly 5.0–5.6 and field and aquarium sources placing the optimum below pH 6. A dense rainforest canopy keeps these pools dim, and Apistogramma specialists have long noted that shaded forest-stream species like this one sit in water that runs cooler than nearby open habitats, a detail that matters for breeding. Reported temperatures span roughly 73–86 °F (73–86 °F), with the lower-to-middle part of that band more representative of the native shaded creeks. The fish keeps to the leaf litter and sparse driftwood that, as Römer et al. note for the whole complex, form the main cover over a sandy bottom.

Feeding

In its native creeks Apistogramma nijsseni is a small benthic micropredator, foraging over and within the leaf litter that carpets the streambed. It is best described as primarily carnivorous, taking benthic invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans, and other micro-fauna picked from the substrate and detritus. FishBase places it at a trophic level near 3.3, consistent with a micro-predator rather than a herbivore or sediment-sifting detritivore. Ecologically it is a creature of structure and cover: the deep leaf litter and submerged wood that define its habitat are at once its larder, its spawning sites, and its refuge from larger fish and birds. The same dim, acidic, low-mineral water that limits competitors keeps invertebrate prey, microbial films, and decomposing leaf material in steady supply, so a fish this size can hold a small streambed territory and feed without ranging far. That tight coupling of leaf-litter habitat and diet is why aquarists who keep the fish over botanical substrates tend to see the most natural foraging.

Mating

Apistogramma nijsseni forms strong, generally monogamous pair bonds, with the classic Apistogramma division of labour skewed toward a dominant female — a genuine exception in a genus where most species are harem-forming polygynists, as Ad Konings notes explicitly in Enjoying Cichlids. A ripe female adopts her bright yellow-and-black dress, claims a cave or crevice as a spawning site, and defends a tight territory around it; the male holds a larger surrounding territory and courts, but it is the female who runs the nest. This is where the species earns its reputation. Experienced apisto keepers consistently rate Apistogramma nijsseni and its close relatives as more pugnacious than crowd-pleasers like Apistogramma cacatuoides, and moderators on dedicated Apistogramma forums single out nijsseni-group females as notably aggressive — a bonded pair in too small a tank can do real damage to tankmates and even to each other. Wild-caught fish are reported as more combative than tank-bred lines. The practical upshot is that pair formation needs space and escape routes: a male with nowhere to retreat from a brooding female is at genuine risk.

Breeding

The panda dwarf cichlid is a cave-spawning substrate breeder. The female deposits her eggs on the roof or wall of a sheltered cavity — a hollow under wood, a coconut shell, or a flowerpot in the aquarium — then takes over guarding and fanning the clutch while the male patrols the wider territory. FishBase summarizes the pattern as the female guarding the eggs and both parents attending the free-swimming larvae. Clutches are modest, on the order of a few dozen to perhaps a hundred eggs for a fish this size, and the female shepherds a tight cloud of fry once they are mobile. The black markings on her body and pelvic fins, already conspicuous as part of the breeding dress, appear to double as a signal to the brood: across the genus, females are reported to use these markings to direct fry to drop and rest on the bottom when danger threatens, and fry that ignore the cue are at real risk of being eaten. That same maternal flexibility has a harder edge — a female whose clutch or fry number too few to be worth the investment may consume them outright and re-spawn within one to two weeks, which is also why artificially hatching eggs (bypassing her care entirely) is best kept as a last resort: a female hatched that way may never have learned proper brood-tending from her own mother.

The species' best-known scientific footnote is environmental sex determination. Römer and Beisenherz (1996, Journal of Fish Biology 48:714–725) showed across thirty-three Apistogramma species that the temperature experienced during roughly the first six weeks of development skews the offspring sex ratio: cooler water yields more females, warmer water more males, with pH a weaker, secondary influence in some species. Apistogramma nijsseni is a textbook case, and the lesson for breeders is direct. Rearing fry too warm produces broods of nearly all males, so keepers aiming for balanced ratios target the cooler, mid-70s-°F range these forest-pool fish evolved in. Otherwise the fry, once free-swimming, are not difficult to grow on over botanical substrate and a diet of small live foods.

In the aquarium

Apistogramma nijsseni is moderately demanding — within reach for an aquarist who has kept soft-water community tanks and is willing to manage chemistry carefully, but not a beginner fish. Everything starts with the water.

Water: this fish comes from one of the most mineral-poor, acidic drainages in Amazonia, and trying to keep or breed it in hard, alkaline tap water is the single most common reason keepers report dull colour and zero breeding. Target pH 4.5–6.0, total hardness ideally below 5 °dH, and temperature in the lower-to-middle part of its range — roughly 73–79 °F (73–79 °F) — for everyday maintenance. Reverse-osmosis water remineralised to very low TDS (under 50–100 µS/cm), or a soft rainwater blend, is the practical solution in most tap-water regions. Warmer water toward 82–86 °F is tolerated but should not be the baseline, especially for anyone rearing fry.

Tank: a single pair needs at least about 15–20 US gal (a 24-inch / 23.5 in base footprint), but a species this territorial rewards generosity — a planted 20–30 US gal lets both fish claim separate zones and eases a brooding female's harassment of the male. Use fine sand, since coarse gravel deters the gentle leaf-litter foraging that is the core of the fish's behaviour, and cover it with a generous layer of dried deciduous or tropical leaves (Indian almond, oak, beech). The leaves earn their place three ways: they leach tannins and humic acids that pull pH down, feed micro-fauna for foraging, and break up sightlines so a subordinate fish can escape a dominant one. Add several cave options — ceramic caves, coconut half-shells with a cut entrance, or flat-stone overhangs — so the female has real choice of spawning site and the male has somewhere to retreat. Finish with driftwood, dense planting, and subdued lighting; a floating-plant layer cuts intensity and keeps the fish visible instead of hidden.

Tankmates: keep them small and non-threatening. Dither fish do real behavioural work — a school of five or more pencilfish (Nannostomus species), small tetras such as ember tetras (Hyphessobrycon amandae) or rummy-nose tetras, or a group of Corydoras sterbai — their open-water activity reassures the cichlids and draws them out of hiding. Avoid anything large enough to intimidate the pair (roughly, territory-holding fish over 2 in), bottom-dwellers that compete for caves, and fin-nippers. Other dwarf cichlids should not share the tank unless it is large enough for clearly separate territories, and even then inter-species stress is a real risk. This is not a community fish that tolerates crowding.

Strict pairs, not harems: unlike many Apistogramma kept as one male with two or three females, this species pair-bonds and does best kept as a single pair. Harem attempts tend to produce chronic aggression among females that here can escalate to injury. Sexing is easy even in sub-adults — males grow larger, show blue-violet colour, and develop the pointed, elongated unpaired fins of maturity, while females stay smaller and begin showing the yellowing and black flank-blotch of breeding dress as they mature. Captive-bred stock is available year-round and is somewhat less aggressive than wild-caught material, adapting more readily to typical tanks.

Common mistake: rearing fry too warm. As Römer and Beisenherz (1996, Journal of Fish Biology) documented, temperature during roughly the first six weeks skews the Apistogramma sex ratio toward males in warmer water. For Apistogramma nijsseni specifically, experienced breeders report that holding fry at or below about 75–77 °F (75–77 °F) yields useful proportions of females, while rearing at 82 °F or above routinely gives broods that are almost entirely male. Given good chemistry, the fish is not hard to breed: a healthy, well-fed pair in soft acidic water spawns without prompting, and the female is a capable, attentive parent. First foods should lean on micro-fauna from the botanical substrate and infusoria rather than rushing to brine shrimp: Konings specifically flags A. nijsseni as a species whose newly free-swimming fry often find standard Artemia nauplii too large to take, so an established tank with its own supply of micro-organisms carries the first days better than an infusoria culture or early brine shrimp would. Freshly hatched Artemia and micro-worms can follow once the fry have grown a little. The real skill is not triggering the spawn but getting the chemistry and temperature right from the start, so the fish colour up, form a stable pair, and produce viable, sex-balanced fry. One more point worth knowing for anyone planning a long-term setup: unlike short-lived Apistogramma such as A. cacatuoides, whose females often live only 9–12 months — just long enough to raise a brood or two — A. nijsseni is reported to live for several years given good care.

Conservation

On the IUCN Red List, Apistogramma nijsseni is assessed as Data Deficient — an assessment by Hernán Ortega Torres, dated 25 April 2014 and published in 2016. Data Deficient means there is not enough information on population size and trend to assign a threat category; it does not mean the fish is known to be secure. The assessment is explicit that the listing follows from the species being known only from its type locality, with no data on abundance or trends. It is not in any protected area, carries no CITES or CMS listing, and is present in the international ornamental trade. Collection for the hobby is real, but the species is now widely captive-bred, so wild harvest is unlikely to be the central concern; the more pointed issue is its very small, localized range, which makes any single population vulnerable to local habitat change.

In the wider western-Amazon context, that vulnerability is the typical story for the region's narrow-range blackwater specialists. The upper Amazon's fish fauna is extraordinarily diverse but unevenly assessed, and the dominant pressures are habitat-driven rather than over-fishing: deforestation of riparian forest — which removes the leaf litter and shade these blackwater fish depend on — together with agriculture, road-building, sedimentation, and water-quality change. For a microendemic forest-stream cichlid like the panda dwarf, clearing the canopy or silting the creeks of its one known drainage would matter far more than the aquarium trade ever has. The fair summary is that Apistogramma nijsseni is not formally threatened today, but its restricted distribution and dependence on intact forest streams leave it exposed — which is exactly why a Data Deficient listing here should be read as a call for monitoring, not a clean bill of health.
