Hybridization watchi

Apistogramma eremnopyge is a small Peruvian dwarf cichlid from the leaf-littered backwaters of the upper Amazon near Iquitos, described only in 2004. Its name means roughly "dark rump," and for good reason: every fish, male or female, wears a sooty blotch on the lower edge of the caudal peduncle — a mark carried by no other Apistogramma and the single feature that fixes its identity. Reddish flecks on the face earned it trade names like "strawberry" and "red beard" years before science caught up. In the tank, though, its defining trait is a near-pathological shyness that frustrates even experienced keepers, who can go two weeks without glimpsing a fish they were sure had died. It reaches the hobby only as an occasional wild import, and it is a fish for the committed keeper rather than a community-tank starter.

Taxonomy & naming

Apistogramma eremnopyge was formally described in 2004 by Jonathan Ready and Sven O. Kullander of the Swedish Museum of Natural History (Zootaxa 564: 1–10), from specimens the wholesaler Oliver Lucanus had collected two years earlier. The hobby met it first: the fish reached the European trade in early 2003 under the collector's name "Barbaroja" (red beard), so aquarists were keeping it before it had a scientific name.

The genus name Apistogramma joins the Greek apisto, "uncertain" or "inconstant," to gramme, "line" — a nod to the variably developed lateral line across these dwarf cichlids. The epithet is more literal: eremnos ("dark, swarthy") plus pyge ("rump"), a noun in apposition for the diagnostic dark patch on the lower caudal peduncle. The type locality is the Río Pintuyacu, 30 mi along the road from Iquitos to Nauta, in the Río Itaya drainage of Loreto Province, Peru; type material is held at the Swedish Museum of Natural History (Naturhistoriska riksmuseet, NRM), the paratypes including NRM 49446.

Apistogramma is among the most speciose of South American cichlid genera, with roughly 70-plus valid species and many more undescribed. Within it, Apistogramma eremnopyge belongs to the Apistogramma bitaeniata complex of the Apistogramma bitaeniata group, which Mike Wise (apistogramma.com) places in the Apistogramma agassizii sublineage of the broader Apistogramma trifasciata lineage — not the Apistogramma pertensis group, which is a separate lineage entirely. Its closest look-alike is Apistogramma bitaeniata itself. The family Cichlidae places it in the Neotropical subfamily Geophaginae. It carries the hobby code A218 in the DATZ system and has circulated under a small zoo of trade names — "fresa" and "strawberry," "diamante"/"diamond," "roterbart," "red beard," "barbaroja" and "Rio Tapiche." No English vernacular is genuinely established, so the fish is best called by its scientific name or its A218 code.

Morphology

This is a true dwarf cichlid, and its reported size depends on who is measuring and where. The original material and FishBase give modest standard lengths of about 1.5 in for males and 1 in for females, while Seriously Fish lists a larger maximum of roughly 2.8 in (3 in) SL for males and 2 in (2 in) for females; importers note that wild mature fish are usually no more than 2 in (2 in) and may stretch a little under long-term aquarium care. Females always stay smaller than males.

The field mark is unmistakable: a prominent dark blotch low on the caudal peduncle, present in both sexes and found in no other Apistogramma. It runs together with a narrow longitudinal lateral band and a caudal spot, but — unusually — there is no mid-lateral blotch. The counts are consistent across sources: 16 dorsal spines and 7 soft rays, 3 anal spines and 6–7 soft rays, and 25 vertebrae, with four dentary and two post-lachrymal infraorbital lateralis pores among the finer diagnostic details. Males are the showier sex — extended anterior dorsal-fin lappets, produced rays at the top and bottom of the caudal fin, more colour overall, and the reddish facial flecking that gave the fish its early trade names. It most closely resembles Apistogramma bitaeniata, and the caudal-peduncle blotch is the cleanest way to tell the two apart.

Habitat

Apistogramma eremnopyge is a narrow-range Amazonian endemic, known only from the Loreto region of northeastern Peru. Its core distribution is around Iquitos in the Río Itaya drainage — the type locality on the Río Pintuyacu — with further records from tributaries of the nearby Nanay system. A separate, disjunct population lives well to the south in the Río Tapiche, a tributary of the Río Ucayali near Requena, more than 93 mi away; whether that southern form is conspecific in every respect is the kind of question that recurs across the genus.

The setting is classic upper-Amazon dwarf-cichlid country: slow tributaries, creeks and backwaters of very soft, acidic water, either clear or blackwater-stained, where fallen leaf litter piles up on the bottom. The Nanay in particular is a tannin-rich, mineral-poor blackwater river, and the Apistogramma bitaeniata group as a whole is tied to such black-water drainages near the main channel of the upper and middle Amazon. The IUCN files it simply as an inland-wetland species. This tea-coloured, ion-poor water is the chemistry that shapes both its biology and the demands it makes in captivity.

Feeding

No dedicated feeding study exists for Apistogramma eremnopyge, so its ecology is read from the genus and its habitat. Apistogramma are micro-predators, chiefly carnivorous, working the substrate and leaf litter for small benthic invertebrates — insect larvae, microcrustaceans and other meiofauna sifted from sediment and detritus. FishBase places it at a trophic level near 3.2, squarely in that small-invertebrate-feeder band.

In its leaf-litter creeks the fish is one thread in a dense small-fish community of tetras, pencilfish and other dwarf cichlids, holding the bottom and the sheltered margins. At that size it is as much prey as predator, which fits its retiring temperament: a fish this small in clear, shallow water survives by staying hidden among roots, litter and overhanging cover rather than by holding open ground.

Mating

Apistogramma eremnopyge has the polygamous, female-centred social system typical of the Apistogramma bitaeniata group. A detailed account by Uwe Römer (Cichlid Atlas, 2006) describes males holding permanent territories and reacting aggressively toward rival males while tolerating several females within their range — a harem, not a fixed monogamous pair bond. Gravid females put on the bright, dark-marked breeding dress usual for the genus and take charge of a small spawning territory inside the male's larger one.

Shyness colours the courtship as much as the daily life. Across independent accounts on the apistogramma.com forums — including from longtime moderator Mike Wise — keepers describe pairs that simply vanish into a dark, structured tank and rarely show themselves, so the courtship is inferred from its results rather than watched directly. One curious observation, reported by Römer and echoed in the hobby, is that a pair may settle and spawn more readily when other conspecific pairs are visible in neighbouring tanks — the distraction seems to keep them from turning on each other.

Breeding

Apistogramma eremnopyge is a cave-spawning substrate breeder with female-tended care, the pattern that runs through the Apistogramma bitaeniata group. Spawning happens in darkness or at dawn, with roughly 50–150 eggs glued inside a crevice or cavity; the male then goes back to patrolling his wider territory while the female guards and tends the clutch and the fry. At about 77 °F (77 °F) the eggs hatch in around two days, and the young are free-swimming five to six days after that. Warmth is a real constraint: temperatures above about 81 °F (81 °F) are reported to hurt fry survival, and the soft, acidic, tannin-stained water of its home creeks appears important for getting eggs to develop at all.

In captivity it will breed repeatedly once given genuinely soft, acidic conditions — reverse-osmosis water, usually peat- or blackwater-conditioned — along with dim light, dense cover and a deep layer of dried leaf litter that both shelters the brood and feeds the microfauna the fry depend on. As with most harem-forming Apistogramma, a single male may tend several broods from different females in sequence, while each female works a small nursery territory of her own.

In the aquarium

Apistogramma eremnopyge is only occasionally imported and rarely turns up in ordinary store stock; when it does, it usually comes through specialist importers dealing in wild-caught Peruvian dwarfs. It is honestly a fish for the committed hobbyist rather than the casual community tank — its extreme shyness, narrow water-chemistry window and sensitivity to poor conditions leave no room for shortcuts. Keepers who provide what it actually needs, though, report a rewarding and quietly fascinating fish.

Tank: the practical minimum for a pair or a small harem (one male, two or three females) is around 15–20 US gal, and a long, low footprint suits its bottom-dwelling habits far better than a tall tank.

Water: chemistry is non-negotiable. Mirror the soft, acidic, mineral-poor blackwater of the wild — target pH 4.5–6.0 and very soft water (hardness well under 4 °dH), using reverse-osmosis water conditioned with peat extract, blackwater tonic or a handful of dried alder cones. Hold the temperature at 73–79 °F (73–79 °F); the upper end of the 72–82 °F tolerance band is fine briefly, but keeping the tank consistently above 81 °F (81 °F) stresses the fish and, per breeding reports, impairs fry survival. Filter generously but keep the flow low — strong current across the bottom stresses a fish from sluggish leaf-litter creeks.

Aquascape: a deep bed of fine sand, not gravel, lets it rummage naturally. A generous layer of dried leaf litter (Indian almond, oak or beech) is not just decoration — it recreates the micro-habitat, gently acidifies the water as it breaks down, and shelters fry from the start. Offer several cave options — coconut-shell halves, small clay flowerpots on their sides, flat-stone lean-tos — so the female has a choice of spawning site and the male has retreats. Dim light from floating plants or a heavy cover of water sprite visibly eases the shyness, and bogwood with low-light plantings (Microsorum, Cryptocoryne) breaks sight lines so males can hold space without constant confrontation.

Sexing and grouping: males run larger (typically 1.5–2 in in aquarium condition, occasionally approaching 3 in SL), with extended dorsal-fin lappets, longer caudal filaments and the reddish facial flecking; females are smaller and plainer except in the bright yellow-and-black spawning dress. The natural harem of one male to two or three females spreads his attention so no single female bears the full brunt of it, which in a confined tank can turn lethal. A lone pair is possible but needs watching — if the male pursues the female relentlessly and she has nowhere to go, a divider or a move becomes necessary fast. Do not house it with the visually similar Apistogramma bitaeniata: male-on-male aggression between the two runs high, and hybridisation has been documented.

Tankmates: small, peaceful dithers from the same blackwater biozone work best. Ember tetras, black neon tetras or Nannostomus pencilfish act as an all-clear signal that draws the pair out (hatchetfish are too surface-oriented to help), and Corydoras sterbai or similar soft-water cories cover the bottom without competing for cave territory. Avoid anything large enough to eat the cichlids, anything that defends the same bottom crevices (other cave-holding cichlids, loaches), and boisterous schoolers that churn the surface. In a well-planted, properly conditioned tank the fish will eventually venture out and display — new keepers are regularly startled to find that the fish they were certain had died had simply been invisible for two weeks.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Apistogramma eremnopyge as Least Concern (assessment by Ortega Torres, published 2016, last assessed 25 April 2014; e.T49830305A53818158), with a stable population trend and no major threats identified. It is listed under neither CITES nor CMS, and FishBase rates its fishing vulnerability as low. The one direct human pressure is the ornamental trade: it is collected as a wild import for aquarists, never for food, and it has never moved in volume — even in the hobby it is described as a fish that "went quiet" once its novelty wore off.

Least Concern reflects current knowledge, not security. This is a narrow-range endemic of a few clear- and blackwater drainages around Iquitos and the Río Tapiche, and the broader story of the Neotropical cichlid fauna is written less in collapse than in the steady erosion of habitat — the framing set out across the standard reference literature, Kullander's Cichlidae treatment in Reis, Kullander & Ferraris's Check List of the Freshwater Fishes of South and Central America (2003) and the earlier ecological syntheses of the Amazon's fish communities (e.g. Lowe-McConnell). The pressures on western-Amazon blackwater streams — deforestation, road-building of exactly the kind the type locality is measured against ("30 mi on the road from Iquitos to Nauta"), sedimentation and shifting water chemistry — bear directly on a leaf-litter specialist tied to soft, acidic, low-mineral water. So the honest reading is the modest one: the species is currently Least Concern and apparently stable, but it is a small fish with a small range in a basin under mounting strain, and its security rests on habitats that are far easier to degrade than to restore.
