Hybridization watchi

Apistogramma personata is a small masked dwarf cichlid of the Uaupés (Vaupés) River, a blackwater tributary of the upper Rio Negro in Amazonas, Brazil. Sven Kullander described it in 1980 and named it for the dark band drawn across its forehead between the eyes — a literal mask. It reaches only about 2 inches, lives over sand and leaf litter in soft, tea-stained, strongly acidic water, and breeds in a cave where the female alone guards the eggs. Little of it reaches the hobby: most fish sold as personata are really the similar Apistogramma cf. personata from the Colombian side of the Vaupés, and the true Uaupés form is exceptionally rare in the trade. Patchily known even in the wild, it carries a Data Deficient listing that is honest about how little has been measured.

Taxonomy & naming

The Swedish ichthyologist Sven O. Kullander described Apistogramma personata in 1980, in his foundational revision of the genus published as Bonner Zoologische Monographien No. 14. The type locality is the Rio Uaupés at Assai, in Amazonas State, Brazil, on the upper Rio Negro near the Colombian border. Its epithet, personata, is Latin for "masked" (from persona, a theatrical mask); both the ETYFish Project and the Catalog of Fishes read Kullander's intent as a nod to the dark band that runs between the eyes and across the forehead. The genus name — Regan's replacement for the preoccupied Heterogramma — joins Greek apistos (uncertain, inconstant) and gramma (line or marking), a fitting label for cichlids told apart largely by their variably developed, often incomplete lateral lines and their subtle bars and stripes.

Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes lists the name as valid with no synonyms, and Kullander upheld it in his 2003 checklist of the freshwater fishes of South and Central America. The original combination was Apistogramma personata Kullander, 1980. We found no published holotype register number in a source we could verify directly, so the type locality — not a fabricated catalogue number — is the anchor here.

Apistogramma is a Neotropical genus in the eartheater radiation (tribe Geophagini, subfamily Cichlinae; older literature files the group under Geophaginae). With well over a hundred valid species and a long queue of undescribed forms circulating under provisional "A-numbers," it stays a perennial taxonomic puzzle. Hobby and literature sources place Apistogramma personata in the brevis species-group alongside other small Rio Negro and Uaupés fish such as Apistogramma brevis and Apistogramma uaupesi, and the species lent its own name to an informal personata-group. Much of the confusion is geographic: a thicket of similar fish from the Colombian side of the Vaupés, around the town of Mitú, has long been traded as Apistogramma cf. personata under the hobby code A172, and one of those forms was later split off as Apistogramma sp. "Mitu." Whether any Mitú population is the same species as the Brazilian type form remains unsettled — and much of what aquarists call "personata" is really this cf. material.

Morphology

This is a genuinely small fish. FishBase gives a maximum of about 2 in standard length, while Kullander's 2003 checklist cites a total length of about 2 in; mature males run a little larger and longer-finned, and females stay distinctly smaller. The body is slender and only weakly compressed — the build of an Apistogramma made to thread through leaf litter rather than hang in open water.

The face carries the name. A dark mask crosses the forehead between the eyes, set off by the suborbital stripe and cheek markings typical of the genus, and a narrow band runs the length of the flank — continuous or broken into a row of spots depending on the fish's mood. Males are the showier sex, with reddish spotting and worm-like lines on the lower head, a bluish-green sheen, and more extended finnage; ripe and brooding females switch to the vivid yellow that runs through the genus, darkening their bars and fin margins to near-black over a clutch.

Telling the forms apart is the perennial headache. Several Vaupés-drainage fish share this pattern, which is exactly why so much trade stock is honestly labelled Apistogramma cf. personata. Experienced keepers describe the true Uaupés fish as deeper-bodied and higher-backed than the slimmer Mitú-area populations sold under the same name, but a confident call needs a good look at diagnostic features, not just the mask.

Habitat

Apistogramma personata is endemic to Brazil and restricted to the Uaupés River drainage — a major tributary of the Rio Negro in the upper Amazon basin — with records as well from the Rio Tiquié, a Uaupés affluent (R. Britzke, in the IUCN assessment). The IUCN also notes informal records from the middle and upper Rio Negro upstream of Santa Isabel. This is a narrow-range blackwater specialist, not a wide-ranging Amazonian generalist. Similar fish from the Colombian side of the Vaupés, around Mitú, are usually labelled Apistogramma cf. personata and have not been confirmed as the same species.

The water is the soft, acidic, tea-coloured blackwater of the Rio Negro system, stained by humic and fulvic acids leached from the surrounding forest, with negligible carbonate hardness and very low conductivity. The in-situ figures come mainly from the Mitú region rather than the Brazilian type locality: at one Río Vaupés-drainage site (Río Cuduyari) Hättich and colleagues (2020) logged a temperature of 85 °F, a pH of 4.8, carbonate hardness near 4.5 °KH and conductivity around 100 µS/cm, and found the local Apistogramma spanning a pH range of roughly 4.5 to 6.5. Some Vaupés tributaries actually run clearwater, so the habitat reads better as a soft-acidic mosaic than as uniform black. Because these numbers come from sympatric cf. personata material, not from confirmed Brazilian-type fish, the temperature and pH stored here are drainage-typical and inferred rather than measured on the type form — FishBase itself carries no temperature, pH, or depth range for the species, listing only "tropical."

In the dry season the fish gather along sandy beaches and shallow margins with slow current; Hättich and colleagues took the local Apistogramma mostly at depths under one metre in the calmer water beside the main channel, occasionally more than a hundred at a single haul. Those open sandbanks offer almost no cover, which is part of why breeding is so rarely seen on them. Field collectors suspect spawning shifts into the flooded shoreline forest during the rains, where submerged roots, branches, and leaf litter supply the cavities a cave-brooder needs.

Feeding

No dedicated gut-content study exists for Apistogramma personata, so its diet is read from the genus and from its blackwater, litter-floored habitat rather than from direct work on the species. FishBase puts Apistogramma around trophic level 3.3, and the mechanics are classic for the group: the fish takes a mouthful of sand and fine detritus, sifts the edible fraction through its gill rakers, and expels the cleaned substrate, while the slightly upturned mouth picks small items off the bottom.

In practice the menu is the small invertebrate life of the leaf litter and sand — micro-crustaceans such as copepods and ostracods, insect larvae, and other meiofauna — topped up by whatever organic particles the sifting turns up. Within the community a dwarf cichlid this size is both a grazer of the invertebrate layer and prey for larger fishes: field collectors working the same Vaupés sandbanks have netted Apistogramma alongside Corydoras catfish and larger predators including Cichla (peacock bass) and Geophagus eartheaters — a reminder that for a 2-inch fish on an open beach, staying near cover is as much a survival tactic as a feeding one.

Mating

Like most of the genus, Apistogramma personata is understood to run a polygynous, harem-based system: one male holds a loose territory that overlaps the smaller territories of several females, each defending a cave or sheltered crevice. As a female ripens she turns vivid yellow and sharply aggressive, picks a site, and holds it, while the male patrols the wider ground and drives off rivals. Aquarium observers of the closely related Vaupés Apistogramma have followed the whole courtship — the female occupying and inspecting a cave, the pair examining sites together, and dominant males expelling subordinate "sneaker" males that try to slip into the brooding cave in feminine camouflage.

The personata-group is known for strong intraspecific aggression: comparing the gentler Apistogramma sp. "Mitu" with true personata-group fish, Hättich and colleagues singled out the latter's fierce same-species aggression as a defining trait. Reproduction seems tied to the flood cycle. Because the dry-season sandbank aggregations offer almost no cover, breeding is seldom witnessed there; the likeliest reading is that pairs spawn in the structurally complex, flooded forest margins during the wet season, the big mixed shoals dispersing into cover to reproduce.

Breeding

Apistogramma personata is a substrate cave-spawner. FishBase records that the eggs are fixed to the ceiling of a cave and that the female alone tends the eggs and larvae — the maternal-care pattern shared across the genus. No clutch count has been published for Apistogramma personata itself; congeneric dwarf cichlids of this size typically lay from several dozen up to roughly a hundred eggs per spawning (FishBase gives up to about 80 eggs for the similarly sized Apistogramma cacatuoides), and that genus-typical figure is the best available proxy — inferred, not measured for this species.

The female does the close work: she guards and fans the clutch on the cave ceiling, leads the free-swimming fry, and holds a tight territory around the cave in the darkened, high-contrast brooding dress the genus is known for, while the male keeps the wider ground. In the related Vaupés fish, observers have followed the cycle from egg deposition through about ten days after the fry become free-swimming. In aquaria, the species and its cf. personata relatives spawn in the standard Apistogramma way — a small cave, an upturned half-flowerpot, or a coconut shell as the chamber — but success hinges on genuinely soft, acidic, tannin-rich water; hard, alkaline tap water tends to leave the fish dull and the eggs non-viable. The reliable triggers for the group are large water changes and a rich live-food diet that conditions the females into their yellow spawning dress.

In the aquarium

Rarely seen in the hobby, Apistogramma personata is a fish for experienced Apistogramma keepers, not a first dwarf cichlid. Almost everything on the market is either wild-caught from the Colombian Vaupés (sold as Apistogramma cf. personata or "Mitú" fish) or the output of a few specialist breeders; confirmed Brazilian-type fish from the Uaupés is exceptionally uncommon. Ask for the collection locality when you buy, because the various Vaupés forms can differ in temperament and peak colour even where their tank needs match.

Water: the chemistry is non-negotiable. This is a Rio Negro blackwater fish recorded at pH values of roughly 4.5 to 6.5 in the wild and conductivities around 100 µS/cm or lower. In hard, alkaline tap water it will be dull, stressed, and unlikely to spawn — even a nominal pH of 7 with moderate hardness sits too far from the target. The standard approach is a reverse-osmosis or rainwater base remineralised to very low hardness, with tannins from dried leaves (Indian almond, oak, catappa) or peat filtration pulling pH toward 5–6. Temperature belongs in the mid-to-upper 20s Celsius; the field data suggest these fish take up to about 84–86 °F in the dry season, so there is no need to chill the tank.

Tank: a single pair fits in around 15 US gal, but a harem of one male with two or three females shows more natural behaviour and is easier to manage in 20–25 US gal or more. Furnish it heavily — dense plants or driftwood and a bed of dried-leaf litter over sand or fine gravel, the litter doubling as blackwater conditioner and as the microhabitat these fish use in the wild. Spawning caves are essential: half a coconut shell, a small clay pot tipped on its side, or a leaning piece of cork bark all work, and subdued lighting suits the fish and lifts their colour.

Tankmates: keep the blackwater theme and choose genuinely small, peaceful fish. Rio Negro tetras and pencilfish such as Paracheirodon axelrodi (cardinal tetra) or Nannostomus species share the water chemistry and hold the upper column without threatening the pair. Avoid anything big enough to eat fry or bully the female off her cave; Corydoras or otocinclus make fine bottom companions, while robust or combative species do not. Other Apistogramma will compete territorially and are best left out unless the tank is large enough for real separation.

Common mistakes: the usual failure with Rio Negro Apistogramma is trying to breed them in water that is not soft and acidic enough — egg fertility and fry survival fall away even at pH 6.5 once there is any real hardness. The second is skimping on caves: too few, and one dominant female monopolises the best site and suppresses the rest. Offer one cave per female plus a spare or two and most of that tension disappears. Conditioning on live or frozen foods — Daphnia, bloodworm, Artemia nauplii, micro-worms — is the most dependable way to bring females into spawning colour and lift clutch viability.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Apistogramma personata as Data Deficient, evaluated on 7 November 2018 by Brazil's Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio) and published in 2022 (carried in the current 2025-2 Red List). The label is honest about how little is firmly known: the species' true range, population size, and trend have not been pinned down well enough to place it in a threat category, and its population is described as naturally infrequent and sparse. It is not listed by CITES, and FishBase rates its intrinsic fishing vulnerability as low.

Data Deficient is not a clean bill of health. This is a narrow-range blackwater fish tied to one drainage and to a specific soft, acidic chemistry — a profile more exposed than a wide-ranging generalist's. The assessment names one explicit threat: collection for the international ornamental-fish trade, which is legally permitted for the species under Brazilian ornamental-fishery rules. Because the fish lives in a low-productivity environment and is naturally uncommon, the assessors judge that even modest harvest could matter; they point to signs of local decline that cannot yet be quantified and call for monitoring of both the wild population and the catch. No occurrence in a federal protected area is on record.

The wider setting is the Rio Negro and upper Amazon, which by global freshwater standards stay comparatively intact, with low human population density across much of the catchment. Most Amazonian cichlids here are Least Concern or, like this one, simply not assessed in detail rather than known to be declining. The honest summary: the basin is not collapsing the way some other cichlid waters are, but Apistogramma personata is a poorly-documented, habitat-specialised fish under localised collection pressure, and the Data Deficient label is a call for more fieldwork, not a verdict of safety.
