Taxonomy & naming
Petrotilapia chrysos was described in 1996 by Jay R. Stauffer Jr. and Elizabeth van Snik in the journal Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters, in a paper titled 'Description of a new species of Petrotilapia (Teleostei: Cichlidae) from Lake Malaŵi, Africa.' The type locality is Chinyamwezi Island in the southeastern arm of the lake, where the type series was collected at depths of one to three metres. The Catalog of Fishes, FishBase, and the IUCN all treat chrysos as a valid species with no junior synonyms.
The genus Petrotilapia was erected by Trewavas in 1935 and diagnosed by its predominantly tricuspid oral teeth — a feature that, with the broad fleshy lips, makes the genus immediately recognizable among the mbuna, the Chichewa name for the rock-dwelling cichlids of Lake Malawi. The generic name joins Greek petra, 'rock,' to the cichlid genus name Tilapia: a 'rock tilapia.' The specific epithet chrysos is Greek for 'gold,' a noun in apposition referring to the golden coloration of non-territorial males. Petrotilapia is informally divided into three habitat-and-pattern groups named for representative species — the Petrotilapia tridentiger, Petrotilapia nigra, and Petrotilapia genalutea groups; chrysos belongs to the Petrotilapia nigra group of dark, blue-black males that favour somewhat deeper, more exposed rocky habitat. Because the species of this genus diverge chiefly in the live coloration of breeding males and overlap heavily in body measurements and meristics, color is the practical key to telling chrysos from its relatives.
Morphology
Petrotilapia chrysos is a substantial mbuna, reaching about 5 in standard length. It carries the unmistakable Petrotilapia equipment: broad, fleshy lips packed with long, slender, flexible tricuspid teeth arranged in many rows, with a lateral series of unicuspid teeth behind the main tooth band — a built-in comb for stripping algae that stays visible even when the mouth is closed. Fin counts run to 16-19 dorsal spines and 7-10 soft dorsal rays, with three anal spines and 6-8 anal rays.
Coloration is strongly tied to social status and sex. Territorial males are predominantly blue-black, the dark ground broken by roughly seven to ten gray-to-brown vertical bars, with a dark blue cheek and a black throat — the basic 'nigra group' pattern. Non-territorial males take on the gold cast that names the species, a distinct color phase from the dark dress of a holding male. Females are paler and patterned differently again. This status-linked color change is part of what makes the genus so taxonomically slippery: a single animal can look quite different depending on whether it is defending a patch of rock or drifting in the shoaling crowd, and separating chrysos from look-alike congeners such as Petrotilapia nigra rests on reading the nuptial color of territorial males alongside the gold of subordinate ones rather than on body shape, which overlaps almost completely across the genus.
Habitat
Petrotilapia chrysos is endemic to Lake Malawi (also Niassa or Nyasa), the rift lake this site is really about, and within it to a very small area: it is known only from the rocky shores of Chinyamwezi and Chinyankwazi, two small islands in the lake's southeastern arm near Boadzulu. This makes it one of the most range-restricted members of an already localized genus — no Petrotilapia is lake-wide, but most occupy a stretch of coast rather than a pair of islets.
The fish lives over rock, the substrate that supplies both its food and its breeding territories. The type series came from shallow water, one to three metres down, but as a nigra-group species it ranges across the rocky slope and forages out into the water column as well. FishBase classes it as benthopelagic in the warm, hard, alkaline water typical of Malawi's rocky coasts — broadly 73–82 °F (73-82 °F), pH around 7.7-8.8, and high carbonate hardness, the stable rift-lake chemistry of the whole rocky-shore mbuna community. The confinement to two small islands is the single most important fact about the species' ecology: its entire world is a few kilometres of island shoreline.
Feeding
Functionally, Petrotilapia chrysos is an aufwuchs grazer — 'aufwuchs' being the German term mbuna keepers use for the felt of attached algae, diatoms, and small invertebrates that coats sunlit rock. It uses its dense comb of slender tricuspid teeth to brush loose algal filaments and the tiny animals living among them, scraping the film from the rocks over which it lives. FishBase reports that chrysos also forages up in the water column, presumably taking both phytoplankton and zooplankton, and places it at a trophic level of about 3.4 — a grazing omnivore rather than a strict herbivore.
This combination of rock-grazing and water-column feeding is typical of the genus and helps explain how several Petrotilapia can share a shoreline: they partition the rocky habitat by depth and exposure and supplement the algal film with plankton when it is abundant. For chrysos, restricted to two small islands, that flexible diet means the local rock-and-plankton resource of a few square kilometres has to support the entire species.
Mating
Like the rest of the Malawi mbuna, Petrotilapia chrysos is a polygynous, territorial breeder in which only some males hold breeding territories at any time. A territorial male darkens into his blue-black nuptial dress, establishes and defends a patch of rock, and displays from it to passing females while warning off rival males; non-territorial males — the ones wearing the gold phase that names the species — and females live less tethered lives, drifting and shoaling over the rocks. A ripe female moves through this loose crowd to a holding male's territory to spawn.
No courtship study has been published specifically for chrysos, but the pattern is consistent across Petrotilapia and the mbuna generally: the male's spawning coloration and the female's choice of partner do much of the work of keeping the species reproductively distinct from sympatric, look-alike congeners. On a shoreline where several Petrotilapia can overlap, this assortative mating by male color is the mechanism that holds otherwise near-identical species apart.
Breeding
Petrotilapia chrysos is a maternal mouthbrooder, like all Lake Malawi mbuna. The pair bond lasts only as long as spawning: the male displays over his territory, the female lays her eggs and immediately takes them into her mouth, fertilization follows in the usual mouthbrooder fashion (the female mouthing the male's vent or egg-spot region), and she then incubates the clutch for roughly three weeks before releasing free-swimming fry. There is no paternal or biparental care — the female alone broods and shelters the young.
Clutch sizes have not been documented for chrysos specifically, but they fall in the range expected of a large mbuna of this body size: on the order of a few dozen comparatively large, yolk-rich eggs. This is the low-fecundity, high-investment strategy characteristic of mouthbrooders, in which egg number is traded for the protection of oral incubation. After release the fry shelter near the rocks and graze the algal film, and the female may briefly take them back into her mouth when threatened in the first days before the brood disperses.
In the aquarium
Petrotilapia chrysos is rarely seen in the hobby. Its restriction to two small, remote islands in the southeastern arm makes it an uncommon export, and like other large Petrotilapia it has never been a mainstream mbuna; what keeping experience exists is largely extrapolated from the genus. Any husbandry notes here should be read in that light.
As one of the larger mbuna, chrysos needs a footprint-driven setup — a long tank with abundant rockwork to provide grazing surfaces, territories, and broken sightlines, on the order of the 130-US-gallon-plus (≈130 US gal) tanks experienced keepers recommend for the genus. Match the wild chemistry: hard, alkaline water around pH 7.8-8.4 and warm tropical temperatures. Feed it as the herbivore-leaning omnivore it is, with algae- and spirulina-based foods; keepers of this feeding guild warn against rich, soft protein foods such as bloodworms or adult brine shrimp, which Petrotilapia digest poorly and which invite bloat. Temperament-wise, Petrotilapia are surprisingly even-tempered for their size, with aggression running hottest male-to-male within the species, so a group with enough females and space helps diffuse it. Keep a single Petrotilapia species per tank: the genus hybridizes readily among its look-alike members, and chrysos — a narrow-range island endemic — is exactly the kind of fish whose genetic integrity is worth protecting in captivity.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Petrotilapia chrysos as Least Concern (assessed 20 June 2018; Konings & Kazembe). The rating reflects the absence of evidence of decline rather than a large or secure range — this is a fish known only from Chinyamwezi and Chinyankwazi islands, one of the narrowest distributions in the genus. An earlier assessment had treated the species as Vulnerable, and the tension between the two ratings is real: a tiny range is inherently a source of vulnerability, because any localized degradation of those few square kilometres of island rock affects the whole population. The species is of no importance to subsistence fishers, and faces no CITES or fishery pressure of its own.
The honest framing is that a 'Least Concern' island endemic can still live in a strained lake. The basin-scale review by Chavula and colleagues (2023, Journal of Great Lakes Research 49(6):102241) documents mounting anthropogenic and climatic stress across Lake Malawi/Niassa/Nyasa: heavy over-fishing, rising sediment and nutrient loading washing off deforested catchments, an estimated warming of roughly 33 °F in the shallow water column that strengthens stratification and reduces productivity, and the looming risk of invasive species. For a shallow rocky-shore grazer like chrysos, sedimentation is the most direct threat — silt smothers the algal film it combs and clouds the clear water its breeding displays depend on — and that threat is amplified, not diluted, by the species' confinement to two small islands. Its security is tied to the health of a very specific patch of Malawi's coastline.
