Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Protomelas ornatus is a large, thick-lipped haplochromine cichlid endemic to Lake Malawi, found in shallow intermediate habitats — the rubble-and-sand transition zones — around virtually every shore of the lake. Its most distinctive feature is a set of fleshy, laterally compressed lips that function as a living gasket: the fish presses them over crevices in the rock, seals the gap, and sucks out whatever is hiding inside. Males grow to roughly 10 in total length and, in breeding dress, are boldly patterned with contrasting yellow and dark markings that vary noticeably across geography.

Taxonomy & naming

Protomelas ornatus was described by the British ichthyologist Charles Tate Regan in 1922 in his comprehensive survey 'The Cichlid Fishes of Lake Nyassa,' published in the Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London (1921, pt 4, no. 36, pp. 675–727). Regan placed it in the catch-all genus Haplochromis as Haplochromis ornatus, and the holotype — a unique specimen — is deposited at the Natural History Museum, London, under register number BMNH 1921.9.6.112. The type locality is Lake Malawi (then known as Lake Nyasa), southeastern Africa; the locality was not further refined in Regan's original description.

The species has had a complex generic history. Eccles and Trewavas (1989) and Maréchal (1991 CLOFFA) placed it in Eclectochromis, and FishBase still carries that assignment. Snoeks and Hanssens (2004) maintained the Eclectochromis placement. Ad Konings, the foremost field authority on Malawi cichlids, transferred the species to Protomelas in the fifth edition of Malawi Cichlids in their Natural Habitat (Cichlid Press, 2016), and the IUCN Red List assessment (Konings 2018) and Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (current status updated 2026) both follow Konings's placement. The site uses Protomelas ornatus in line with those current authorities, but the Eclectochromis combination will appear in older aquarium and scientific literature.

Two synonyms are recognised: Haplochromis lobochilus Trewavas, 1935 (type locality Deep Bay, Chilumba) was synonymised by Konings (2001); Haplochromis festivus Trewavas, 1935 (type locality Nkudzi) was synonymised by Snoeks and Hanssens (2004). The species is sometimes encountered in the aquarium trade under its old labels 'Haplochromis Flavimanus', 'Haplochromis Lobochilus', or 'Haplochromis Maleri Thicklip' — none of which constitute valid names or settled common names, and the site does not elevate them to that status.

Morphology

The most immediately striking feature of Protomelas ornatus is its lips: enlarged, fleshy, and — especially in wild fish — thickened into rubbery pads that allow the mouth to form a near-perfect seal over crevice openings. The lips are uniformly swollen along the full margin of both jaws, distinguishing this species from Placidochromis milomo, which has a similar feeding technique but a different lip morphology; FishBase's diagnostic note for Protomelas ornatus is '12–13 lower gill-rakers; lips uniformly swollen all along the jaw's edges.' The body is deep and laterally compressed — an adaptation that lets the fish rotate 90 degrees and slide its body edge-on into horizontal cracks when feeding from below.

Size figures depend on whose data you trust. FishBase carries 7 in SL (standard length) as the maximum for unsexed/male fish, sourced from Eccles and Trewavas (1989). Field accounts by Konings and the malawi.si database give males a maximum total length of about 10 in, with females reaching roughly 6.5 in TL — a difference substantial enough that the sexes are easy to tell apart at full size. Typical aquarium adults run somewhat smaller. Sexual dimorphism extends to colour: females and juveniles show a pronounced blotched pattern on the upper flanks — large, irregular dark patches against a pale background — while breeding males intensify into a striking combination of yellow on the ventral body and darker flanks, with the degree and placement of yellow varying among populations. This geographic variation is meaningful: the Masinje variant, for instance, differs in the proportion of yellow from fish photographed at Gome Rock or Ntekete, and Ad Konings notes several colour forms throughout the lake.

Habitat

Protomelas ornatus is endemic to Lake Malawi (also known as Lake Niassa and Lake Nyasa), the Great Rift Valley lake shared by Malawi, Mozambique, and Tanzania. Its distribution is lake-wide but not uniform: it is common at most localities in intermediate habitat and absent from purely rocky places such as small offshore islands and reefs where there is no sandy substratum, and Konings records it as rare or absent from localities where the related but undescribed form Protomelas sp. 'hertae' is present — suggesting competitive exclusion or habitat partitioning between the two thick-lipped forms.

The species lives in shallow to very shallow water, from the surface to about 33 ft depth (roughly 1–33 ft). Its preferred biotope is the 'intermediate' zone characteristic of so much Malawi shoreline: not the sheer rocky reef favoured by mbuna, nor open sand, but the mixed habitat where small rubble and scattered rocks lie on a mainly sandy bottom. This is the productive transition belt where organic matter settles, invertebrates shelter, and small cichlids congregate — exactly the conditions that reward Protomelas ornatus's ambush-style feeding. Lake Malawi's waters are warm, clear, hard, and alkaline: in-situ measurements and FishBase parameters converge on temperatures of 73–81 °F, pH 7.4–8.4, and a hardness range of about 7–30 dH. The IUCN gives an area of occupancy of roughly 1,137 mi² within an extent of occurrence of about 29,373 mi². It occurs within Lake Malawi National Park at Cape Maclear and Thumbi West Island, where Konings documented it in his field surveys of that site.

Feeding

Protomelas ornatus is a specialist predator of crevice-dwelling invertebrates and juvenile fishes, particularly small mbuna. Its hunting method is as unusual as its lips: it approaches a crack or groove in the rock, inserts the laterally compressed front of its body edgewise into the opening, and then presses those fleshy lips over the gap to form a seal — then creates suction to pull the prey out. When the target crack runs horizontally, observers have recorded the fish rotating its entire body 90 degrees along its vertical axis to get the best angle. This technique, documented in both Konings's field work and in aquarium observations noted by keepers, is functionally analogous to that of Placidochromis milomo and Chilotilapia euchilus, but Protomelas ornatus's laterally compressed shape allows it to penetrate narrower spaces than those larger-lipped species can reach.

The diet also includes invertebrates extracted from rubble, and the malawi.si database notes that in the aquarium the characteristic thick lips develop less fully than in wild fish, likely because the mechanical stimulus of pressing against hard rock is absent. FishBase places the trophic level at approximately 3.4 — consistent with an active predator of small animals rather than a herbivore or detritivore. The IUCN assessment (Konings 2018) and the published Cichlids Yearbook accounts both confirm the predatory ecology.

Protomelas ornatus is one of several Malawi cichlids that reach into rock crevices to feed, and its build sits in the middle of that guild rather than at an extreme: Lichnochromis acuticeps, a laterally compressed, torpedo-shaped specialist with an unusually pointed snout, is thinner-bodied still and can probe deeper into narrow holes than P. ornatus manages (Cichlids Yearbook Vol. 4) — a reminder that the thick-lipped, crevice-sealing strategy of P. ornatus is one solution among several to the same rocky-shore resource.

Mating

Like virtually all of Lake Malawi's haplochromine cichlids, Protomelas ornatus is a maternal mouthbrooder, and the social organisation during the breeding season is built around males defending sandy-bottomed territories among rocks. Breeding-coloured males are observed throughout the year — there is no strictly seasonal breeding cycle — and a dominant male typically constructs a small raised platform or scrapes a patch of sand against a large boulder, which serves as the spawning site. Males are territorial and will expel conspecific males as well as other species that approach the spawning area.

The IUCN assessment (Konings 2018) notes that territorial males usually occur in small groups, each holding an adjacent spawning site, suggesting the species forms loose aggregations of displaying males rather than isolated solitary territory-holders. Females, together with immature individuals, form small schools of up to about 20 fish that move through the territories. When a female is ripe she enters a male's territory; the male courts her with lateral and quivering displays, colour heightened; she lays a small clutch of eggs, fertilises them at the male's vent in the classic mouthbrooder 'T' posture, and takes them into her buccal cavity.

Breeding

After spawning, the female broods the eggs and developing larvae in her mouth for approximately three weeks. During this period she does not feed, relying on energy reserves. Clutch sizes are not precisely documented in the primary literature for this species; records for closely related Protomelas species (e.g. Protomelas taeniolatus) and the genus-typical figures from Konings's field accounts suggest broods of roughly 30–60 eggs — consistent with medium-large maternal mouthbrooders of the intermediate habitat. Note: this is inferred from congeners and Konings genus-level data; a measured clutch count for Protomelas ornatus is not available in the public literature and the figure above should be treated as habitat-typical.

After the initial release of free-swimming fry, the female continues to guard her offspring, allowing them to take refuge back in her mouth when threatened. Konings (IUCN 2018) notes that females guard offspring for one to two weeks after the fry are first released. The rocky rubble habitat gives the fry good shelter opportunities. In the aquarium, breeding follows a similar pattern: males excavate and defend a sand hollow or platform against boulders; spawning occurs in that hollow; the female broods; and fry are released after roughly three weeks. Aquarium keepers report that the female should be moved to a separate tank or the male separated once the female is visibly brooding, as males can be persistently harassing.

In the aquarium

Protomelas ornatus is rarely kept in the hobby. It shows up occasionally in specialist Malawi cichlid circles — usually labelled under one of its old trade names such as 'Haplochromis Lobochilus' or 'Thicklip Hap' — but it is not a staple of the mainstream Malawi trade and should not be confused with the more commonly imported Placidochromis milomo or Chilotilapia euchilus, which share the thick-lipped look. If you do acquire fish, confirm the species identification before purchase; labelling in this group is historically loose.

Tank size should be generous. Males reach up to 10 in total length and are territorial during breeding; a single male with two or three females needs at minimum a 300-litre tank (roughly 80 US gallons), and a 400-litre or larger setup is preferable if you plan to keep a species-only colony or a mixed Malawi community. The decor should replicate the intermediate zone habitat: a deep sandy substrate — fine aragonite or pool-filter sand works well — combined with a substantial arrangement of rocks and rubble at the back and sides of the tank. Leave open sandy areas in the midground and foreground where the female can excavate a hollow and where the fish can display naturally. Strong biological filtration and a weekly water change of around 25–30 % are necessary to maintain the water quality this species needs. Target parameters of pH 7.8–8.4, temperature 73–79 °F, and moderate to high hardness (general hardness 10–20 dH) closely match the lake's natural chemistry.

This species is best kept with other large Malawi haplochromines of similar size and temperament — the so-called 'haps and peacocks' community. Avoid mbuna (the smaller, more aggressive rocky-shore cichlids) as tankmates; mbuna will outcompete Protomelas ornatus for crevice space, harass it relentlessly, and the contrasting diets and water-flow preferences make the combination difficult to manage well. Conspecific aggression runs male-to-male: only one adult male should be kept per tank unless the aquarium is very large and heavily broken up with rock structures. Females and juveniles are comparatively peaceful. Bottom-dwelling catfish of the Synodontis genus are a traditional and functional addition to a Malawi community and are generally compatible.

Breeding in captivity follows the wild pattern. A dominant male will clear a flat area of sand against a large rock and attempt to drive females toward it with lateral displays and intensified colour. Once the female spawns and takes the eggs into her mouth, she should ideally be moved to a separate, lightly decorated holding tank so the male's continued attention does not stress her into spitting the brood prematurely — a common keeper mistake. The female broods for approximately three weeks; fry are typically released at 0.5 in and are large enough to take Artemia nauplii, crushed cichlid pellets, and fine-milled flake immediately. A second common mistake is separating the female too early or too late: moving her before the eggs are past the early embryo stage risks a stress-induced spit; leaving her in the main tank until release risks brood loss from harassment.

One practical trick for the thick-lipped species: Konings designed a simple 'Aufwuchs-feeder' — a split length of PVC pipe wrapped in insect-screen mesh, with pelleted or frozen food packed between pipe and screen — specifically because standard aquarium feeding gives mbuna and thick-lipped haps like Protomelas ornatus and Placidochromis milomo nothing to work for; scraping food through the mesh, as the fish would work Aufwuchs off a rock, may help the lips develop more fully than they otherwise do in captivity (Cichlids Yearbook Vol. 2).

Malawi bloat is the most serious husbandry hazard for this and all Malawi haplochromines. The condition — a rapid-onset abdominal swelling caused by dysbiosis or internal bacterial/parasitic infection, often triggered by diet or water-quality lapses — can kill fish within 48–72 hours. Feeding a diet that skews heavily toward fatty or protein-dense foods not suited to a crevice-invertebrate feeder, and allowing nitrate to accumulate above roughly 20 ppm, are the most commonly cited predisposing factors. A varied diet of high-quality cichlid pellet, occasional frozen mysis or krill, and minimal feeder fish (which carry disease risk) is preferable. Overfeeding is a related pitfall: feed sparingly, once or twice a day, and remove uneaten food promptly.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Protomelas ornatus as Least Concern (assessed 20 June 2018, by Ad Konings; reviewer J. Snoeks). The justification cites a lake-wide distribution, common occurrence at most localities, a stable population trend, and the observation that four decades of extraction by the ornamental fish trade has nowhere noticeably caused a detectable decline. Its occurrence in the rock-and-rubble intermediate habitat affords it some natural protection from destructive beach seines, and it is only incidentally caught by hook-and-line subsistence fishers. It occurs within Lake Malawi National Park. The threats listed are low-level: ornamental trade collection and subsistence fishing, both assessed as affecting a minority of the population without measurable impact.

That Least Concern assessment is the correct headline, but it sits within a broader lake context worth understanding. Lake Malawi as a whole faces real and accelerating strain. Chavula et al. (2023, Journal of Great Lakes Research 49(6):102241) catalogue the pressures in detail: heavy overfishing and the near-collapse of commercially important chambo (Oreochromis) stocks; sediment and nutrient loading from deforested, eroding catchments degrading nearshore habitats; a documented warming of approximately +33 °F in the upper water column that strengthens thermal stratification, slows nutrient-replenishing vertical mixing, and reduces overall productivity; and growing invasive species risk. For a shallow intermediate-habitat species like Protomelas ornatus, the most directly relevant threat is sedimentation: its feeding technique depends on clean rubble surfaces and clear water where mbuna fry and invertebrates shelter. Silt blanketing those surfaces, and murky water reducing hunting efficiency, would degrade exactly the niche this fish occupies. The species is not currently threatened, but it lives in a lake whose nearshore habitats are under pressure, and the long-term picture for even Least Concern residents of those habitats warrants watchful monitoring.
