Taxonomy & naming
Alestopetersius leopoldianus was described by George Albert Boulenger in 1899 under the original name Petersius leopoldianus, the type locality being the waters of Lake Leopold (now Lake Mai Ndombe) in the Congo Basin. The species was subsequently transferred to the genus Alestopetersius by Hoedeman in 1951; because it was not described directly in that genus, the authority is rendered in parentheses as (Boulenger, 1899). Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes recognizes Alestopetersius leopoldianus (Boulenger, 1899) as the valid name.
The genus Alestopetersius belongs to the family Alestidae, the African tetras, a group of primarily freshwater characiforms distributed across sub-Saharan Africa and whose members include many of the Congo Basin's most recognizable schooling fishes. Within Alestopetersius, the species is distinguished by the combination of its size, its broad longitudinal band, and the iridescent blue coloration of the dorsum that defines its appearance under good lighting.
Morphology
Alestopetersius leopoldianus reaches a maximum of about 3.5 in total length. The body is moderately elongate and laterally compressed in the manner typical of the family Alestidae. The most prominent marking noted in the original 1899 description is a dark, broad longitudinal band running along the flank — a feature that remains diagnostic and immediately places the fish among the banded Congo tetras.
Under direct or angled illumination the dorsum reveals a deep blue coloration with a reflective, metallic quality; the rest of the body shows a variable play of color dependent strongly on the quality and angle of the light source. Habitat

A spacious tank with a long swimming lane, some open midwater, and subdued to moderate planting suits the species.
The coloration is strongly light-dependent; hobbyists wanting to appreciate the deep blue dorsum and metallic body sheen should use focused or bright overhead lighting rather than relying on ambient tank light alone. Water chemistry replicating the soft, warm, slightly acidic to neutral conditions of the Congo Basin — temperatures around 75–82 °F, pH 6.5–7.5, low to moderate hardness — is appropriate, though precise optimal parameters have not been published for this species. Peaceful tankmates of similar size are recommended; the Congo Basin offers numerous suitable companions from other alestid and other characid families found in the same waters.
