Alestopetersius nigropterus was described by Max Poll in 1967. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) is the authority for the valid name Alestopetersius nigropterus Poll, 1967. The species belongs to the family Alestidae — the African tetras — a group of characiform fishes confined to continental Africa and distinct from the South American tetras of Characidae.
The genus Alestopetersius was erected to accommodate a suite of medium-small alestids from the Congo basin with characteristic fin ornamentation in males. The type locality is in the vicinity of Kinshasa, and specimens reach the export trade through the Kinshasa ornamental fish trade, the primary gateway for Congo basin oddities into the hobby.
Morphology
Alestopetersius nigropterus reaches a maximum recorded length of around 2.5 in standard length (SL), making it a small to medium alestid. The body form follows the alestid plan: laterally compressed, moderately deep, with a forked caudal fin and the single adipose fin characteristic of all characiforms.
Sexual dimorphism is pronounced. Males are more vividly coloured and develop extended caudal fin rays or lobes — the elongated finnage that distinguishes several Alestopetersius species and gives them appeal in the aquarium trade. Females are plainer and carry shorter fin extensions. The specific epithet nigropterus ("black-winged") refers to dark pigmentation in the fins, a feature of the species.
Habitat
The species is recorded from Lake Mai-Ndombe (formerly Lake Leopold II), a large, shallow, dark-water lake in the middle Congo River basin in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The lake sits in the Congo lowland basin and is fed by rivers draining heavily forested terrain, which stains the water dark with tannins and humic acids, producing the soft, acidic conditions typical of Congo basin habitats.
A Seriously Fish reference links the species to flowing stream environments with variably-sized rocks and boulders, indicating it may also use lotic habitats connected to the lake system. Water temperatures in tropical lowland DRC are warm year-round; pH conditions in such Congo basin waters tend toward the acidic side, consistent with the soft, tannin-stained character of the region's rivers and lakes.
Feeding
In natural habitats, Alestopetersius nigropterus is recorded as feeding on small insects, crustaceans, and fallen fruit — an opportunistic, surface-oriented and mid-water diet typical of small alestid tetras in the Congo basin. The presence of fallen fruit in the diet reflects the forested catchment of Lake Mai-Ndombe and its tributaries, where terrestrial inputs to the water are substantial.
In the aquarium, the species adapts well to prepared and live foods. Bloodworm, Daphnia, and Artemia are accepted readily and are valuable for conditioning and maintaining colour. A varied diet that includes live or frozen invertebrate foods alongside quality small pellets or flake meets its nutritional needs.
Mating
Alestopetersius nigropterus is an egg-scattering species typical of alestid tetras: spawning occurs among fine-leaved vegetation or other structure without pair bonding or parental investment. Males display actively to females using their extended finnage and body colouration, and dominant males will compete for access to receptive females.
The extended caudal fin rays of the male are presumed to be sexually selected ornaments, functioning as displays of fitness to choosy females — a pattern seen across Alestopetersius and allied Congo alestids. Spawning is likely opportunistic and tied to water conditions and food availability rather than to a single seasonal peak, consistent with the relatively stable thermal environment of the Congo lowlands.
Breeding
As an egg-scattering alestid, Alestopetersius nigropterus produces adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs that are scattered among fine-leaved aquatic plants or deposited over other spawning substrate. No parental care is provided; adults will consume their own eggs and should be separated from the spawning medium after spawning to protect the clutch.
Detailed captive breeding reports for this species are sparse in the accessible literature, reflecting its relative rarity in the trade. By analogy with other Alestopetersius and Congo alestids, eggs are expected to hatch within a few days at tropical temperatures, producing small fry that initially require very fine first foods such as infusoria or rotifers before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp. Soft, slightly acidic water matching the species' Lake Mai-Ndombe origin is recommended for conditioning and spawning.

Alestopetersius nigropterus is an uncommon but desirable Congo basin tetra suited to soft, slightly acidic water. Given its natural habitat in the tannin-rich waters of the Lake Mai-Ndombe system, an aquarium that replicates these conditions — low pH around 5–6.5, soft water, warm temperatures in the low-to-mid 20s Celsius, dim lighting or heavy planting — will keep fish in best condition and encourage the full expression of male colour and fin extension.
The species is a schooling fish and should be kept in groups of six or more. A well-planted tank with some open swimming space and dark substrate suits it well; dried leaf litter can enhance the biotope character and further acidify the water naturally. Tankmates should be small, peaceful species from compatible soft-water habitats. Because it is periodically exported from Kinshasa, wild-caught specimens enter the trade irregularly — quarantine and parasite treatment on arrival is advisable for any wild-caught fish.
Conservation
Alestopetersius nigropterus is assessed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dating to 2009. The listing reflects concerns about the species' restricted distribution and pressures on its habitat in the Lake Mai-Ndombe basin. Lake Mai-Ndombe and the wider middle Congo basin face ongoing pressures from habitat degradation, sedimentation, and unsustainable exploitation of wetland resources in one of the world's most ecologically significant but politically fragile river systems.
Data on wild population trends for this and most other Congo alestids are limited, reflecting the difficulty of sustained fieldwork in the DRC. The species is exported from Kinshasa through the ornamental fish trade, which provides some monitoring through trade data but also constitutes a potential pressure on wild populations if collection is unregulated. The 2009 Endangered assessment should be treated as a flag for precaution given the ongoing threats to Congo basin wetlands.
