Its specific name refers to the narrow longitudinal band that extends into the middle caudal rays — a colour character that sets it apart within the tribe Petersiini. Alestopetersius taeniatus was described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Géry in 1996. It belongs to the tribe Petersiini within the family Alestidae, the African tetras, a clade distributed across sub-Saharan rivers and lakes. The valid name is recorded as Alestopetersius taeniatus (Géry, 1996) in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes; parentheses around the authority indicate the species was originally placed in a different genus before being transferred to Alestopetersius.

The genus Alestopetersius groups several small, slender alestids from West and Central African river basins. Within the genus, A. taeniatus is distinguished by a distinctive narrow lateral band that extends into the middle caudal rays — a colour character considered unique among members of the Petersiini as documented at the time of description. The type locality is the Sangha River in Cameroon, and the species is treated as endemic to that drainage.

Alestopetersius taeniatus is a small fish, reaching a maximum recorded standard length of approximately 1.5 in.
