Brachyalestes jackiae is a freshwater characid from the Lulua River basin of the Democratic Republic of Congo, described in 2023 as part of a phylogenomic and morphological revision that revalidated the genus Brachyalestes and distinguished it from Brycinus. Specimens had long circulated in collections under the misidentification Brycinus kingsleyae before the formal description clarified their true identity. With a maximum recorded standard length of 4.5 in and an origin in warm central African rivers, it represents one of a small number of recently erected Alestid species grounded in modern genomic evidence.

Taxonomy & naming

Brachyalestes jackiae was described by Stiassny & Melo in 2023 as part of a broader phylogenomic and morphological analysis of the African fish genus Brycinus. That study revalidated the genus Brachyalestes — previously treated as a synonym of Brycinus by many authors — and simultaneously described B. jackiae as a new species from the Lulua River basin of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The valid name is governed by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong), which is the primary authority for nomenclature used on this site.

Prior to the 2023 description, material now assigned to B. jackiae had been misidentified as Brycinus kingsleyae, a distinct West African species. The phylogenomic component of the original study placed the new species within Brachyalestes rather than Brycinus, with the distinction supported by both molecular data and morphological characters. The family Alestidae — the African tetras — encompasses many of the larger characiform fishes of sub-Saharan Africa, including the familiar tiger fish (Hydrocynus) and Congo tetras (Phenacogrammus).

The species epithet jackiae honours Jackie Black for support of the senior author (MLJS) and Congolese colleagues, according to the etymology provided in the FishBase record of the species.

Morphology

Brachyalestes jackiae reaches a maximum recorded standard length of 4.5 in (male or unsexed), placing it in the mid-size range for the genus. Like other alestids it is a fusiform, laterally compressed fish built for open-water swimming in riverine environments. Specific meristic and morphometric data from the original description are not reproduced here, but the species was distinguished from Brycinus kingsleyae — the taxon under which it had previously been misidentified — by the combination of characters examined in the Stiassny & Melo (2023) revision.

Habitat

Water temperatures recorded at the type locality ranged from 82–87 °F (82–87 °F), consistent with warm tropical lowland river conditions in central Africa. FishBase codes the species as a freshwater, pelagic, tropical fish.

The Lulua system drains part of the Congo Basin, one of the world's most biodiverse freshwater regions. Detailed habitat descriptions for the specific collection sites of B. jackiae are not available in the sources reviewed, but Lulua tributaries typically flow through equatorial forest and savanna-forest mosaic, with substrates of sand and gravel and variable riparian vegetation. The species is likely associated with the open water column, as suggested by its pelagic ecological coding.

Feeding

Mating

Practical care data — tank size, water chemistry requirements, compatibility, and diet in captivity — have not been published.

For aquarists who may encounter the species in future, the available biology suggests warm water (82–86 °F / 82–86 °F) and open swimming space would be appropriate starting points, following the conditions documented at the type locality. A spacious aquarium with dither fish of comparable size and a high-protein diet would suit its riverine, mid-water lifestyle. Conservation

Brachyalestes jackiae has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List; FishBase records its status as Not Evaluated (NE). The species was only formally described in 2023, and newly described taxa commonly lag behind the IUCN assessment cycle by several years.

The Lulua River basin in the Democratic Republic of Congo is subject to pressures common across the Congo Basin, including subsistence and artisanal fishing, forest clearance, and artisanal mining activity in parts of the catchment. Without a formal IUCN assessment it is not possible to characterise the species' conservation status objectively. Given its apparently restricted known range within the Lulua system, future assessments should consider the extent of occurrence and any evidence of population trend before assigning a category.
