Brachyalestes lateralis is a mid-sized African tetra of the family Alestidae, inhabiting the rivers and floodplains of the upper Congo and Zambezi drainage systems across a broad swathe of southern-central Africa. Reaching up to 5.5 in standard length, it is a pelagic, potamodromous species that undertakes upstream spawning migrations during the rainy season, producing large clutches in flooded marginal habitats. Populations span six countries from the Democratic Republic of Congo and Zambia west into Angola and south through Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Mozambique, and the species is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List.

Taxonomy & naming

Brachyalestes lateralis was originally described by George Albert Boulenger in 1900, based on material from Lake Dilolo on the Congo–Zambezi watershed in what is now Moxico Province, Angola — a geographically significant locality that straddles the continental divide between two of Africa's greatest river systems. The valid name is recorded in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes as Brachyalestes lateralis (Boulenger, 1900), with the parenthetical authority indicating the species was originally placed in a different genus.

The genus Brachyalestes belongs to the subfamily Alestinae within the family Alestidae, the African tetras, a family that encompasses some of the most commercially important and ecologically conspicuous freshwater fishes of sub-Saharan Africa. A 2024 study published in Ichthyology and Herpetology applying genetic and morphological analyses to southern African populations found low differentiation within B. lateralis across its broad range, supporting the treatment of the species as a single, wide-ranging taxon rather than multiple cryptic species.

Morphology

Brachyalestes lateralis is a robust, moderately elongate tetra reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 5.5 in. The body is fusiform and laterally compressed in the manner typical of active open-water alestids, built for sustained swimming in the water column. Like other members of Alestidae it possesses the adipose fin characteristic of the order Characiformes.

The common name 'striped robber' or 'lateral-stripe robberfish' alludes to a prominent lateral stripe running along the flank, a feature that is typical of the genus and provides contrast against the generally silvery body. Detailed meristic data are not available in the sources consulted, but the species' overall form — the fusiform profile, moderate size, and schooling behaviour — is consistent with a pelagic fish that ranges freely through open-water habitats.

Habitat

This species occupies freshwater habitats across two major drainage systems in southern-central Africa. Within the Congo system it is recorded from the upper Congo basin including the Kasai, Sankuru, and Lualaba rivers and the Luapula system straddling the DRC–Zambia border. In the Zambezi drainage it occurs widely across the upper Zambezi, the Kafue River, Lake Kariba, and the lower Zambezi, as well as the Okavango, Cunene, Buzi, and Caprivi systems.

Brachyalestes lateralis is not a common species in the ornamental fishkeeping trade; it is primarily of interest to specialist enthusiasts and public aquaria focused on African ichthyofauna. At up to 5.5 in standard length it is a sizeable fish requiring a spacious aquarium with strong filtration and high water quality. Its pelagic, schooling nature means it should be kept in groups if displayed, and a long tank with open swimming space is more suitable than a planted nano aquarium.

Water parameters for the Zambezi and upper Congo drainages are typically warm and tropical, broadly neutral to slightly alkaline, with moderate conductivity. Data on precise temperature and pH tolerances specific to B. lateralis are limited in available sources, but conditions appropriate to other southern African characins — temperatures in the 72–81 °F range, pH 6.5–8.0 — are a reasonable starting point. The species' diet of small live organisms suggests it would take frozen invertebrate foods, bloodworm, and small pellets in captivity. Its broad range spans Angola, Botswana, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mozambique, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, and includes protected or semi-protected water bodies such as Lake Kariba. As a potamodromous species dependent on intact seasonal flood pulses for successful spawning migration, it may be sensitive to hydrological alteration — dam construction, river regulation, and changes in flood regimes could interfere with its migration and reproductive success — but these pressures are not currently assessed as driving population-level declines across the species' range as a whole.
